Classical music fans: What's your opinion of the quality of the artists and recordings on the ultra-cheap Arte Nova label? I like a lot of the budget Naxos releases but have been seeing very cheap Arte Nova cds around and was wondering what that label's reputation is among folks who listen to a lot of classical music. Are they adequate, terrible, surprisingly good for the price or what? I'm a relative novice to the stuff, if that matters.

What's the price range for a professional music producer for a rock band? We're looking at working with one producer but want to be sure we're getting a good deal.
Are there any questions/features we should be asking the producer about to make sure we're getting a good deal? Right now he's telling us it's about $1500-$2000 per song, is that the going rate?

I'm looking for an affordable recording interface and I think I have it narrowed down to these two M-Audio products, this one and this one. From what little I know I heard that firewire is the way to go with an interface, less lag or whatever, is this really that important and what does this mean when it comes to recording? What's the big downside to a USB interface because from what I've noticed is that they're generally cheaper. [more inside]

I have been using JamStudio for a while now to quickly throw together backing tracks to practice guitar with. This website is great and highly recommended, but I now want something similar but which is more powerful/flexible, has better audio quality and variety, and which will integrate with my recording software (currently Cubase). Midi based would be perfect. I plan to use this mostly for practicing, but also for some recording. [more inside]

I'm trying to get better sound quality out of music recordings, I've been using one of those adapters that turn a 1/4 into 1/8 but it's gets really fuzzy sometimes. I'm looking for a better way to hook up instruments to the computer, I've looked at mixer boxes but they have all these onboard equalizer's that I'm not really interested in, I just want a decent transfer quality and not all the bells and whistles. I guess my question is I'm looking for something cheap that will let me hook up something with a 1/4 jack to my computer, and also having a mic input would be a bonus.

I have co-produced a 5 song collection of songs for a friend, who is not in contract with a record label currently, but hopes to get signed. If this should happen, how would I make sure I benefitted financially by the investing my time and expertise into creating this record?, as well as collect any royalties to follow? Would a signed agreement between him and I be enough?

I was recently listening to Achtung Baby in the car again, and remembered how much I loved it, and a lot of it was because of the sound of the drums. So, how did U2 and Brian Eno get THAT sound on the drums in Achtung Baby? Anyone know any specific pieces of kit or techniques that they used? Mics used? Drum kits used? So on?

I'm a musician and interested in doing well done field recordings of mostly acoustic (but sometimes electric) music. I'm interested in doing it with a minimum of equipment, but producing good quality recordings. In the past I've used a minidisc and a small microphone, sometimes with pretty good results. But I'm looking on ways and equipment to do a better job. [more inside]
