How do I take a song off a regular cd, add viewable lyrics (and whatever else is necessary) and turn it into a karaoke disc that I can hand to the kj at a karaoke joint? I already have evil lyrics and some other audio software, but I can only find reference to working with songs that are already on a cdg ... no references in my audio programs to exactly how to make one myself. I'm looking for something that will be able to play back either an uncompressed WAVE file or that will record an actual audio signal for later playback. It has to be totally shock/shake-proof, and it must be able to automatically stop after every track/file and wait for input to start again. Preservation of sound quality is absolutely essential. If any of you have experience with such a device, please share. [more inside]

I am concerned that a CD I've committed to buy on eBay is a counterfeit. The item's identification number is 4881752639. My concerns were raised after I read some of the seller's feedback from buyers and consequently the feedback the seller has left for them. Also, some buyers have gone so far as to create warning pages for others. There's even damning comments on Znooq's blog about the exact same item I've bought. [more inside]

A long long time ago in the year 2000 I bought a copy of the compilation album "Indie 2000 Volume 5". In the track listing on the second CD there was listed the BIS song "Action and Drama", but when I played the album the song that was on the CD was "Theme from Tokyo" from the same artist. To make things even more confusing I knew someone who bought the same album and their copy had the correctly listed song. My question to you, is how on earth is this possible?

I've fallen in love with music compilations and boxed sets. From the new Nuggets box to Night Train to Nashville to No Thanks, I'm just cuckoo. There are so many, though, in so many different genres, it's difficult to seperate out what's really worthwhile. Their cost makes blind purchasing too dicey for my tastes. So I come to Mefi: what music compilations or box sets can you recommend?

On the PC, I used Easy CD Creator 5 to create CD mixes. I loved the ability to create custom transitions between tracks: cross-fades, fade-ins, gaps, etc. What is the best CD mix-making software for Macintosh? (iTunes is sadly lacking in these sorts of features.) A downloadable shareware app would be great, but I'm willing to consider something like Toast, even though it costs $80. (Is Toast a good product? Will it let me do cross-fades? The reviews make me wary.) I suppose the best option would be some sort of iTunes add-on to let me do cross-fades, etc. Does such a beast exist?

A while ago (a few weeks, a couple months?) I found a online music store that had just been started as some sort of experiment by a larger company. It sold CDs at close to music club prices, but without the subscription. In fact, the parent company might have been BMG or Columbia House. Now I can't find my bookmark, and I can't find it on Google. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Alternatively, can you tell me the best places to buy music CDs online?

This question got me thinking... Why is it that there are video and game rental outlets (Blockbu$ter, Hollywood, etc) but not CD rental outlets here in the US? Anyone know anything about the license agreements video rental outlets sign and in turn what license agreements one accepts when they purchase a CD from a store? Why wouldn't I be able to rent out my CDs? You'd think in this day of iPods, CDRs and such large hard drives, this would be a killer busines to get into.

My car CD player (a Sony unit, probably about 6 years old) pretty much stutters/skips every CD I put in it, usually 5-10 minutes into the disk. Should I replace it, or try those lens cleaner thingies? Also, if I go to replace it, what's the metric in CD players' model specs that will tell me how well the lens will handle light scratches and/or burned CDs? I guess I could just get a really expensive one, but the only feature I really care about is that it doesn't skip.

CDex question. I'm liking it in all regards, but still banging my head over one convenience feature. Isn't there a way to get it to encode a CD as MP3s, and drop the MP3s into a folder with the artist or album title? All I can get it to do is dump MP3 files into its generic "output" folder, and it's slowing down my mass ripping. Help a stupid CDex newbie!

I was explaining to a friend of mine how little music artists make. I've heard they sometimes only make pennies on every CD that is sold. Are there any graphs or charts, (a pie chart would be ideal) on the internet that show where the money would go from the sale of a CD and who pockets what? It seems like something simple that someone should have figured out and put together, but Google is failing me.

I'd like to create some mixed audio CDs where I would literally slow down/speed up parts of the songs to merge them together as a DJ does. I'm mainly planning to make club/dance music mixes, although I may do some downtempo/chill mixes too.

I'd like to import some tracks in from vinyl and would do that via my mixer (i.e. I know not to do it directly from the turntable itself.)

Does anyone have any thoughts on the best software to do some simple editing (I hear there is software that can cut hiss and needle pops and whatnot) and then the mixing? I have both XP and OS X, but I'm thinking I would prefer to do this on the Mac.
