Does anyone have any recommendations for somewhat recent (post-2000) TV or movie popular music soundtracks (or some other kind of compilation)? I tend to like alternative rock, but I'm open to any genre. [more inside]

Are there similar sites such as last.fm and the likes for other media types? I'm thinking sites which can recommend e.g. books and movies based on what I've recently read or watched. I'd prefer non-commercial sites, thus eliminating amazon.com and sites which recommend other titles based on what other users also bought together with a selected book/movie. Thanks.

Does anyone know what song is being played in the second half of the trailer for Pineapple Express? The trippy tune with the girl talk-singing, that starts at about 1:20 in this version: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=AZ07JO-SaBc The song is driving me nuts, I'd love to know who it is.

Anyone know the name of a hip-hop song that uses the quote "I drive cars that shift themselves. My cars shift themselves. They're luxury cars," from the movie Buffalo 66 ? I'm not sure if the artist sings this line or actually samples the clip from the movie. Oh, and the song seems like it might also sample Sir Mix A Lot.

I'm looking for sites related to American popular culture from the early 20th century: books, films, radio, magazines, music, dance, comic strips, celebrities — you name it. I'm particularly interested on the period between the wars, but open to great stuff from before (and during) World War I, as well. Little Nemo, Keystone Kops, the Lindy Hop, Enrico Caruso, Fatty Arbuckle, Al Jolson, Clara Bow, Flash Gordon, Alice blue, Teddy bears, etc. These are all the sorts of things I'm after, especially as they're represented on the web. Bonus points for sites with RSS feeds. [more inside]

Name that tune! In "Unfaithfully Yours", Rex Harrison cracks a joke around 00:16:30 about blah blah "pizzacato con motto vibratto" ("...like a dentist chipping out an old filling!"), then his orchestra launches into a classical piece. What is he having them play? Googling does not suggest that's its title.

For the past ten years or so there has been this kind of clique based in L.A. that is producing a lot of movies/music I really like. My impression is that it includes Bob Odenkirk, David Cross, maybe Laura Kightlinger, Aimee Mann & Michael Penn, Jon Brion, Jack Black, Sarah Silverman, etc. Question is, who else hangs with these people that I have not mentioned, so I can check out what they're doing, and is there any other good stuff from this group that I should see/hear? (besides the obvious stuff).

On the movie version of Pink Floyd's The Wall, there's a short instrumental piece before "In The Flesh" (I think), with a guitar and flute, the guitar part starts something like this:

E||-----------------0----|----------------------|-----------------0----|----------------------|-----------------0----|-----------------||
B||------------1---------|--1-------------------|------------1---------|--1-------------------|------------1---------|--1--------------||
G||-------2--------------|-------2---------2----|-------2--------------|-------2---------2----|-------2--------------|-------2---------||
D||--2-------------------|------------2---------|--3-------------------|------------3---------|--4-------------------|------------4----||
A||----------------------|----------------------|----------------------|----------------------|----------------------|-----------------||
E||----------------------|----------------------|----------------------|----------------------|----------------------|-----------------||

Does anybody know the history or name of the piece, and hopefully have an accurate tab of it? I've played it forever but never seem to have got it quite right.

I find that I never really relate to year-end "best-of" lists because much of the best movies, music, and books I encounter during the year are older works that I hadn't discovered before. So what are the Top 10 Best Things that you discovered in 2003, that weren't made in 2003? [more inside]
