Can you think of films with scenes in which a lock (or locker, safe, handcuffs, etc.) is prominent and integral to the plot? I am helping compile a montage of scenes involving locks (like Dial M for Murder key hiding, or Gaslight desk lock opening). Heist films, people getting out of handcuffs, locks being picked -- these things would all be helpful.

How can I find out when the movie Birth of a Nation premiered in Raleigh, NC? IMDB lists the movie's release date as 3/3/1915. I searched newspapers around that date and saw nothing. I believe the idea of movies opening nationwide on a single date is a relatively recent one, so it may be a different date than the one IMDB lists. [more inside]

Windows Media Player and Center in Vista suck at subtitles for the old b&w foreign flicks I watch. Subtitles are white and get washed out when the picture is white. Is there a hack or some other media player which will render the subtitles better (outlined or in yellow). (FYI: subtitles for these films show up great on my Sony DVD player.)

I want to start a log of films I see, to include director, lead actors, genre, date viewed, etc, and my own review of the flick. This is for my own use only. Can anyone offer a recommendation for software to use/how to set it up in something standard like Excel so that I can search on any category but still have somewhat extensive space for my eloquent prose? Might also extend its use to books and music. I'm a mac user.
Thanks!

Along the same lines, Ocean's Twelve was based on an unrelated script first intended as a John Woo project. Is there a site that will enable me to compile a list of movies I want to see and notify me if any of them show in a configurable fairly wide area? Yahoo Movies lets me build a to-see list, but I have to laboriously plug in a bunch of zip codes for each film (because its range is very narrow). For example, I've only seen LOTR on DVD, and every once in a while a theater revives them as a special thing and I miss it. And, just generally, I'm interested in obscure indie flicks that release only sporadically, and I lack the patience to search each title every few days. Now.....if there were such a site that could do the above plus track showings of my top-predicted films at MOVIELENS, that'd be great (but way too much to hope for). FYI, movielens (movielens.umn.edu) is an awesome groupware prediction engine.
