I love little Stewie from Family Guy. Niles and Frasier Crane also make me giggle like mad. There's just something about the pretentious way that they have. I can't even begin to explain it. Can you give me some other examples of people in books, movies, internet and television that are so deliciously snarky, in that affected character kind of way?

StoryFilter: Main character discovers he/she belongs to a special or secret group. They meet other people within this group who show them the ropes and open a new world to them. Harry Potter, Interview with the Vampire, Wanted, the original Star Wars trilogy... All of these books and movies are good examples of the meme, but they're all kinda dopey pop fiction. Great fun, some of my favorites, but are there some books (or even good movies) that are a little deeper on the subject? [more inside]

Are there similar sites such as last.fm and the likes for other media types? I'm thinking sites which can recommend e.g. books and movies based on what I've recently read or watched. I'd prefer non-commercial sites, thus eliminating amazon.com and sites which recommend other titles based on what other users also bought together with a selected book/movie. Thanks.

I want to make a list of every movie and book I've ever seen/read. There are a few categorizing apps like this, but nothing I've found is very efficient. Here's my idea and tell me if it's already been done: I can search by genre, actor, director, author, etc and be given a list (preferably with the movie/book cover as a clickable icon), which I can then simply click on to go to my master list. The list then has my choices darkened (and the unclicked ones still light), so I can easily see, say, which Scorsese movie I haven't gotten to yet. Does anything like this exist? If not, it'd be a good project for me to work on (tho probably waaay over my head).

I'm looking for sites related to American popular culture from the early 20th century: books, films, radio, magazines, music, dance, comic strips, celebrities — you name it. I'm particularly interested on the period between the wars, but open to great stuff from before (and during) World War I, as well. Little Nemo, Keystone Kops, the Lindy Hop, Enrico Caruso, Fatty Arbuckle, Al Jolson, Clara Bow, Flash Gordon, Alice blue, Teddy bears, etc. These are all the sorts of things I'm after, especially as they're represented on the web. Bonus points for sites with RSS feeds. [more inside]

Fiction usually comes in two flavours: 1st person narrative or 3rd person description. What short stories or novels have been written in 2nd person perspective (i.e. from the reader's viewpoint)? Also, are there any movies shot entirely from this angle?

I'm a professional screenwriter. I have $5000 to option a book to adapt into a movie. That means it can't be a past or present best-seller, or have been previously adapted for stage, TV or screen. It should have a strong narrative, preferably in a clearly defined genre (eg thriller, love story, crime story, horror, coming-of-age) but NOT science fiction. It should also NOT be a classic which everyone will complain I've ruined. What books (or short stories) meeting this description have you read that you thought would have made a great movie?
