An indie film maker wants to use a song my band recorded and released for free. It's written by a friend's band and used with their permission. The film maker is asking to use it for free for a low-ish budget indie film. They have a contract, which states that they will use it for free and how they can use it (and that they do not have exclusive rights). We're pretty much ok with it, and so are the original songwriters. BUT... we've had interest in the past for commercial sync deals with this song. On two occasions, a sync company approached us to present the song to a client for commercials. Although these deals didn't work out, it's not unforeseeable that we get approached again, since this particular song seems to have commercial appeal. My question: if we give the song away for free to this film, will that ruin our chances of selling the song in the future? I know that legally, we can do whatever we want. However, would a sync company or their clients not want to use it if it had already appeared in a film? [more inside]

In the 1948 movie The Red Shoes, there is a scene (search YouTube for "Vicky Page is offerred her first lead role"; about 45 seconds into the clip) where Victoria Page ascends the stairs to Lermontov's villa. In the background is a view of the Mediterranean and the sound of an Italian tenor singing to orchestral accompaniment. Can anyone identify singer (and song)?

Can you name any songs or movies which feature palindromic structures? In terms of music, I don't mean notes or lyrics, but the sections, eg, CVCBCVC. Movie patterns would be more loose, but one could be settings, eg, starts out in a house, then a car, then a plane, etc, ends in a car, then a house. Another pattern could be the entrance/exit of characters. [more inside]
Can you recommend movie scores that sound like the OST for Brick? Organic and evocative, particularly like the last 5-10 seconds of that trailer. Almost like music that's been made without using traditional musical instruments. Words like jangly or handmade come to mind. Thanks!
The 2010 French movie "Point Blank" -- who is singing over the credits at the end of the movie? She is great, the band is great, it's a hot song, but I saw no mention of the song/band/singer as the credits rolled, and I cannot find reference to this anywhere online, aside from other people wondering who is singing also. Weird movie memory filter: I feel like it was a Disney Channel movie. The premise was a 14ish year old girl wanting to be in a boy's band, so she ended up dressing like a boy and they let her in the band. She was also in an all girl band and it happened that they had to perform on the same day. Chaos ensues, and she is found out in the end... Any help is great.

Anyone know the name of a hip-hop song that uses the quote "I drive cars that shift themselves. My cars shift themselves. They're luxury cars," from the movie Buffalo 66 ? I'm not sure if the artist sings this line or actually samples the clip from the movie. Oh, and the song seems like it might also sample Sir Mix A Lot.
Is this piece of music, used in the film 'Forget Paris', just incidental music or a well known piece of jazz? If it is well known, what is it? http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=O29IITBox2c (starts around 2:53) [mild expletive warning for the clip] I bought the soundtrack, composed by Marc Shaiman, and it's not on there.

I'm trying to remember a cheesy sci fi flick from...the 80's maybe. I can't remember much except there was something about a spaceship that crashlanded somewhere, and there was a "sci fi babe" on board...there was probably some sort of talking robot too. The most memorable thing about the movie was that the music was (stolen) from the movie Somewhere in Time was used...or at least something similar. Can anyone help me identify this movie?
Can anyone recognize this theme(YSI mp3 extract; 1.2MB) from Manuel de Falla's El Amor Brujo? I have a strong sense that I've heard it appropriated as(or "inspired") some movie's theme, but the IMDb soundtrack search doesn't throw up anything familiar, credited to de Falla.

What's the music in the (International #1) trailer for The World's Fastest Indian? It's the guitar riff that begins right after the line, "It's what we're here for"--cut to a shot of a red vehicle speeding down the Bonneville Salt Flat. It's used again after the zoom-in on Anthony Hopkins and the VO, "Burt Monro's not ready to finish yet, I'll tell you that mate." Quicktime: small, large.
Is there a good online resource for the complete list of music that appears in a given film but may or may not be included in the released soundtrack?
I just heard an audio sample from a movie where one person is trying to get another to keep his albums in order. It was along the lines of "put the ____ in the ____ section and put the Rock in the Rock section, you wouldn't put Charlie Parker in the Rock section would you?" To which the reply is "I dunno." Where is this from? [more inside]
