I love hiking. It is great cardio and I enjoy it, unlike running which is a boring slog for me. The closest hiking area too me is wonderful, but there has been a lot mountain lion activity there in the past year it is starting to creep me out. Am I just being paranoid? [more inside]
(Late 2008 Aluminum Unibody MacBook. Currently running Mountain Lion. 2GHz C2D, 2GB 1067 DDR3.) Over the past year or so, it's been slowing down significantly. I'm getting lockups, especially with web browsers (I use Chrome most of the time, Safari on occasion) where I get the pinwheel for quite a while. It takes a decently long time to boot up. And when I open it up, it usually takes a minute or so to fully exit sleep mode and become usable again. [more inside]

My early-2007 Macbook Pro is still going strong, besides the fact that it gets very hot and that the battery is kaput. The biggest problem I have with it is that the OS (v.10.5.8) is far enough out of date that I can't update most of my software, and have a hard time acquiring new software. Is it worthwhile to upgrade to the latest version of OS X, or would I be better of just springing for a new mac? [more inside]
I've got an early 2008 Harpertown MacPro that's running 10.5.8 and I'm about to install an SSD into it and put Mt Lion on that, keeping the Leopard drive in there as a multi-boot option for when I need some of the old apps on that. Seems like that'll work, but if anybody's got any tips or caveats, etc., I'd love to hear 'em! A bit more detail... [more inside]
I have a late 2008 MBP, 8GB RAM, with an SSD, running Lion without problems. Should I upgrade to Mountain Lion right now? Have the battery life and other issues been resolved? I'd like to upgrade because I've finally encountered a program that requires Mountain Lion and I'd like to use it. [more inside]
So, I've made the fatal mistake of performing several upgrades at once, and I could do with some advice on where to go now... is my problem with charging time and battery life my new SSDs, my new OS, or something else entirely? Generic snowflake details to follow: [more inside]
Hi all, I have a project I'd like to do that involves the use of Broderbund's Load Runner game. I have a 4 year old Macbook Pro running Mountain Lion. I have found various sites to download the game, but so far none of the downloads work. [more inside]
OS X has spaces. I can assign programmes to different spaces. What I can't have (it seems) is one of those spaces/second desktops show up on the external monitor, it is always an extension of the desktop I am using. So I get a double-wide desktop A (Mac + monitor), then swipe across and get a double wide desktop B (Mac + Monitor) when I go to a different Space. I want A on my Macbook and B on my monitor. I'm selling my mid-2010 iMac on eBay. In the ad, I want to say that I'll include a copy of Mountain Lion on a USB stick so the buyer can install the OS once they take possession of the computer. What I don't know is what will happen if the buyer doesn't yet own a copy of Mountain Lion and they try to install the copy I give them which was downloaded using my Apple ID. [more inside]

Why is Time Machine trying to backup 35 GB of data every single day when I'm only using 300 GB of my 500 GB HD and I know I have not changed or added that much in the time since my last backup? [more inside]

In Mountain Lion opening some (but seemingly not all) folders in "List" view, shows the "Date Modified" column on the left of the window, requiring me to scroll further left to see the "Name" column. What preference did I accidentally change?
I want to plan out my work week-by-week, with each week having a straightforward to-do list of tasks structured by which project they relate to. I do not want to be forced to tie this to-do list to any particular day of the week. What app do I want? [more inside]

I've been using NetNewsWire on the mac since I helped beta test it prior to its release(11+ years), and need a new place to spend most of my internet time. More than 200 daily read feeds later I need a modern reader that can actually deal with modern flash/java/whatever items without crashing of freezing for minutes at time. Anyone recommend something that runs well on 10.8 and can hookup with my google reader account?
How can I control/observe my parents' iMac screen remotely from my own Mac when I'm at home? They made the switch and now I'd like to be able to share their screen to remotely help them figure out, fix and set up things as they need it. There's Back to My Mac, but as I understand it, this is for when both computers are my own and I sign into iCloud on both machines. It looks like I can use Messages, but I'm not clear on what kind of chat account I need? I'm aware of Skype, LogMeIn, etc., but can I do this without additional software? The Sharing panel in System Preferences? Any thoughts? Thanks in advance. Both iMacs are running Mountain Lion.
Looking for software to automatically rate songs in my iTunes library on my Mac (Mountain Lion). I have Autorate, but it hasn't been upgraded in three years and no longer works reliably with my iTunes library as of my upgrade to Mountain Lion. I've also searched Doug's Applescripts and come up dry. Difficulty: large library (18K local songs) + iTunes Match (made no difference with Autorate but has been an issue with other metadata apps).
Mountain Lion iCloud question: I know iCloud stores files locally on my Mac, somewhere. Generally I use two document editors — iA Writer, which syncs to iCloud, and Notational Velocity, which doesn't. Can I set Notational Velocity to save its notes in iA's iCloud folder, so that it automatically syncs to iCloud and I can use iA's mobile apps to edit my notes on the fly?
