I'd like to buy a new laptop and to avoid Vista. Further, I have spent years getting the look and feel of my XP computer just the way I want it: properly functioning software, settings just right, internet programs securely locked down, etc. What problems will I encounter if I try to restore a disk image of the current laptop's configuration onto a brand new laptop (first erasing the Vista after making a disk image of Vista's base configuration). For example, what authentication hoops will I have to jump thru to get future Window's XP updates? Might there be any hardware/software incompatibilities? Any licensing issues for non Microsoft software that might be tied to a certain machine? (A dual boot machine is a possibility, I suppose, although that seems complicated.)

Migrating to a new computer: Has anyone ever simply done the following? a) On old computer, install all the drivers the new computer would need ("install anyway" button to force it). b) swap the C drive from old to new computer. c) Turn on new computer and smooth out any other driver issues and 'refresh' the windows xp install if necessary. Where is all my email? I just installed Windows XP Pro, Firefox, and Thunderbird on a brand-new hard drive. I then copied the entire contents of the C:\Documents and Settings\Username (including hidden files) from the old hard drive onto the new one. Is there a way to move Norton anti virus license from a trashed machine to a new machine or re-activate it on a rebuilt machine ? More than a few times I have been in a situation where I had to reinstall Win2k or rebuild the whole machine or replace a crappy machine with a newly built one. Does Norton AV allow license migration in such situations? I think their activation process normally does not like that if I remember right. Please correct me if I am wrong. Also any opinion on free edition of AVG anti-virus software from GriSoft ?
