Help me sort my values/goals *rationally* & come up with a 5-10 yr plan

I feel I'm at a crossroads, and have conflicting values and needs. I've typically *responded* to life events on an emotional basis, vs. planned and pursued goals. I want to make a life plan to maximize happiness/minimize misery in the short and longer term. If you have strategies for doing so, please share it! Thoughts on my particular situation are also welcome. [more inside]

I'm nearly 40 years old and by some measures, successful. I graduated from a top university and have been employed by major companies for nearly 20 years of my professional life. This is somewhat of a fairly negative post, so let me apologize now. I have a lot of things to be happy about, and I am really struggling to feel happy. Tips for a family-wide reset?

My wife (27) and I (30) are moving our small family (+2 year old son, -anything that won't fit in 6 suitcases) across the country to Portland, Oregon. In large part we're leaving all of our (supportive, loving) local family and friends looking for adventure and to consciously decide the sort of people we will be (Along with a serious upgrade of location from suburban Central Florida). Have others done a similar reset with themselves or their entire family? Any recommendations on how to be loving and charitable to family and friends while you are leaving and enjoying the next phase? Or pointers on how to meet and embrace a new set of friends and "family"? [more inside]

Transitioning from corporate wonk to school teacher?

I have worked in human resources for 15 years (financial services and biotech industries) as a a manager/senior manager and am feeling a bit burnt on the office experience. I very much value the experience of providing counseling and training because I enjoy the process of problem solving with another person. Here's the question... I am 41 and considering going back to school, getting my teaching certificate and bailing out of corporate life. Has anyone else gone through the corporate office to school teacher transition? What was it like? What hadn't you anticipated?
