Yo busco uno mercado Mexicano en Nueva York, por favor.

Help me find a Mexican market in New York to stock up a suitcase of tortillas etc. to help me survive the coming months in Mexican-free Berlin. Hi New York. I'm visiting my former home -- where I could occasionally find a good taco truck -- from my new one, Berlin -- which has only the saddest simulacrum of a burrito shop (with an enlarged map of the Mission district on the wall, just to make me bitter). Can you recommend any good Mexican markets in New York where I can pick up some essentials to take back with me? I'm thinking of trawling around 5th Ave. in Sunset Park but I was hoping for something specific.

I'll be staying in Park Slope/Prospect Heights, if it helps...

Huevos Rancheros Thread: GO!

For those who make huevos rancheros: what do you do to make them amazing? For those who eat huevos rancheros: what detail makes them go from okay to amazing? If I had to be limited to one meal for the rest of my life, it may well be huevos rancheros. My roommate has started making some kickass ones every couple of weeks, but he does it pretty much the same every time. What I love about the dish is going from restaurant to restaurant, each place makes it slightly differently.

So, in my quest to perfect this dish, please indulge me your secret to making the best huevos rancheros. Not detail is to small: type of tortilla, salsa, beans and cheese are all the types of detail I am looking for.

San Diego Mexican food

Authentic Regional Mexican food in San Diego. Where "regional" ≠ Tijuana/TexMex. My folks from Idaho are coming for a San Diego visit and they asked to go out for some authentic regional Mexican food. I've been to places like Marisco's German and Tacos El Gordo, which I've been told are at least close to "authentic", but I suspect those are more Tijuana authentic. I think we're looking for something other than the Tijuana region. But I'm a complete gringo so how would I know? Additionally, I'd rather not go to places where I'm uncomfortable parking my car. I don't mind being the only white guy in the place, but I have my comfort limits.

So two questions -

1) What are some good, authentic, regional Mexican restaurants we should try?
2) What the hell does "regional Mexican" food even mean really? What food am looking for?

And please, do us all a favor, don't tell me to go to Old Town Cafe. I'm sure it's authentic on some level, but I'm interested in something more.

How can I recreate the Gorditos (Seattle restaurant) Salsa at home?

How can I recreate the Gorditos (Seattle restaurant) Salsa at home? I love Gorditos, and if you live in the Seattle area, you probably do too. I would eat there every day if I could, and part of the reason for that is their salsa. I think it is some sort of roasted pepper concoction, but my knowledge of mexican salsa's is not so good. I can make a great chunky fresh tomato salsa, but I want to be able to make the salsa I get at Gordito's. Anyone have recipe suggestions?

Identify this bread!

What did I eat in Mexico? It was basically cream cheese-filled bread, does it have a name? On a day trip to Juarez while visiting friends in El Paso, we had lunch at a restaurant (it may have been the restaurant for which you get a margarita coupon when you buy a trolley ticket from El Paso to Juarez) where one of our party remembered an appetizer she’d had on another visit. She couldn’t remember what it was called, but described it to the waiter as “little breads with cream cheese inside.” The waiter brought out a plate of, essentially, warm white dinner rolls filled with cream cheese (i.e., the cream cheese was baked in). They were surprisingly tasty, and I’d love to know what they were and how to make them. My Mexican friends had never heard of them, and googling hasn’t turned up any answers so far. Has anyone heard of anything like this?

Calling all cooks! I have moved from California to New Zealand and there is almost no mexican food to be had here in the land of the long white cloud. I'm having to learn to make everything from scratch so please give me your best mexican recipes! Anything and everything from how to make tortillas to a good margarita recipe is welcome. I'm especially after awesome salsa recipes, as I've mastered pico de gayo but I can't seem to take it any further. Thanks!

Trying to find chocolate chips and flour tortillas in London

Where can I purchase chocolate chips and flour tortillas in London? No -- I'm not making some candy burritos. But I find myself in London, forgot to pack my bag o' chocolate chips (the future father-in-law lurves my freshly-baked cookies), and I'd also like to make fajitas, but I couldn't find flour tortillas at the big Sainsbury's in Islington.

I've seen smaller bags of milk chocolate chips for sale, but I'd prefer to get the bigger semi-sweet bags -- either Nestle, Guittard, Hershey or Ghiradelli (a long shot, but hey).

Am I SOL? Thanks for any help (or reccos of Mexican restaurants in London, if I can't scare up some tortillas)!

Porque no pequeno?

Why do you never see snack sized bags of tortilla chips? Doritos and other powdered cheese covered corn chips come in snack size bags, but you never see what I think are referred to in the snack biz as "restaurant style" (corn tortilla chips without cheese coating) chips in snack bags. Why?

Is there a Bay Area-style burrito place in Los Angeles?

If you've spent time in the Bay Area, you've probably been to one of those burrito places where they make the burrito in front of you with your choice of fillings. Kind of like how they make sandwiches at Subway, but these are generally really good burritos. They steam the (gigantic) tortillas, there are three different beans to choose from, tons of guacamole, Mexican sodas, etc. Is there a place like this in LA? I promise that I've been looking. I'm thinking of El Sombrero in Berkeley or Pancho Villa in SF.

So here's the problem: I live in Los Angeles, and I should be able to have access to the best burritos on Earth. I don't want a roach coach burrito and I don't want the small dry kind they have at 24 Hours in Boyle Heights. I want a huge delicious burrito made in front of me to my specifications.

Any help?

Takeout Tamales in Portland?

Are there good takeout tamales in Portland somewhere? Where? Mrs. PDB and I are having a Seis de Mayo party next Saturday, and our grand plan to bring back some of the best tamales I've had (from Lerua's in Tucson) fell through when my trip to Tucson this weekend was called off.

So, is there a place in Portland that does really good tamales for takeout sale by the bag? Cost isn't really an issue, nor is locale - I'm in NW, but I'll go wherever in the Portland metro area that there are good tamales to be had.

Mexican Food Questions

ComidaFilter: Yesterday, in Delaware (of all places), I had some seriously kickass Mexican food. Like, the best I've had since I left Texas. [mas adentro] This brought up a couple of questions:
First and foremost, how do you make that yummy chicken in the tomatoey sauce? The kind that just sort of pulls apart? We (and by 'we,' I mean 'my SO') have tried a number of recipes, and they just don't hold a candle to the goodness you can find in a decent Mexican restaurant.
Also, just as a trivia thing, how authentic are black beans in Mexican food? To me, if someone says, "Mexican beans," pinto beans come to mind first. Is it a regional thing? Is one kind of beans more of a Mexican-American thing?

Mexican Food in NYC

Wow, there really is no good Mexican food in New York. Why? (more insidious). I've only just arrived in LA after a long time in New York, and I don't get it - Baja Fresh, La Salsa and about a hundred other little fast-food places make Mexican food as well or better than many of New York's best-regarded places, for 1/3 the price (Mexican Radio, Gabriella's, Rocking Horse, Rosa Mexicano, etc.), and forget about Burritoville, Fresco Tortilla and its Mexi-chinese variants. These places out here are chains, not mom-and-pop joints: Why aren't they on the East Coast, too?
