Seeking recommendations for a site with good coverage of books, films, comics etc. centered around SFF nerdery for my RSS reader. I used to read The Mary Sue
, but have been meh about it since its revamp. I'm currently trying out Tor.com
, but I'm looking for other alternatives. Feminist orientation is a plus, but not mandatory. I don't play video games, and I'm not particularly interested in rewatches/rereads other than on FanFare.

I'm going back to school for communications in the fall. I'd like to start gathering career ideas now so I know what to look for when I graduate and also so that I pick the right courses for my career path. When I went in to my undergrad in 2007, I had no idea of what I would do upon graduation. So, I'd like to gather some ideas now and tailor my course selection towards potential career options. Lots of home movies, some are super-8, some are tapes, some are mini-DV tapes, etc. I'd like to get them put on DVDs that I can then easily edit. I'm in Manhattan, NYC. thanks (oh a long time ago there was another question like this and somebody suggested a mail-order place, but I don't feel comfortable sending off my precious home movies from the 1950s etc. away)

A colleague wants to deepen his understanding of online publishing (and I do, too!) -- how do the big print magazine/newspaper publishers manage their online publications, and what are the smaller, newer, younger online-only publications doing, too. Topics of interest run the gamut, from editorial policy to metrics. [more inside]

Hey Internet. I'm a recent grad, and I loved the media-based extracurriculars I had in college (radio, newspaper, etc.). Do you know of any small media outfits (zines, indie newspapers, indie radio stations, off-beat special interest websites, etc.) that typically need volunteers in New York, New Jersey, or Philadelphia? I already know about WFMU. Thanks!

Our 17 year old cousin is coming to visit. He comes from a sheltered environment, not allowed to watch TV at home, and they don't have wifi. We'd like to enjoy some really good TV together.
I'm looking for good quality shows that are sophisticated and fun, with minimal romantic/sexual content. On the kid's last visit, he really enjoyed the Firefly and Justified series. [more inside]

I run a small media company with a staff of five (two people on sales, two editors, one social media person). The salespeople have a low salary, high commission salary structure, and advertising deals are generally in the low-mid 5 figure range. Our social media person is interested in getting into sales, or more specifically, getting compensated for introductions that eventually turn into sales. We're happy to accommodate her but have no idea how to structure things. [more inside]

How does one get interviewed/cited in articles? Someone once told me there was a service that you could sign up with if you were interested in being contacted by journalists who were covering a particular domain. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

I teach a summer camp, and on the first day we hand out a list of questions and have the students interview each other one-on-one as an ice-breaker. We do it very quickly, so simple questions are the best. What are some things that a group of 11-13 yr olds (mostly girls) are likely to have an opinion on?

My favorite part of museums these days are the visible storage units. My favorite part of natural history museums are old-fashioned drawers filled with air-tight cases. I want to know more about the history and practice of storing/preserving art objects, paintings, sculpture, textiles, etc. What books/websites should I be reading to find out more? The more weirdly medium specific and detailed the better. Strange anecdotes very much welcome.

Any economics geeks out there who can point me to how the government calculates intellectual property now in GDP figures? Is there information on how they calculate the value of a movie versus a TV show versus a book? I've seen some articles that say news shows and newspapers don't count towards the intellectual component of GDP, but is there a thorough explanation anywhere?

I'm looking for original self-marketing ideas for a writer and/or a designer. Okay, social media is important: Design your own page, update it frequently and get your friends to like it and promote it to their friends. But I'm looking for those kinds of tips that you've read and thought to yourself "Well that's original!". Something on par with Nine Inch Nails'/H2DA/Radiohead's decision to give their music for free "lest they come to the unique live concert experience" marketing ploy. Have you ever come across a Seth Godin or a Malcolm Gladwell book (or anything else) and was struck by something interesting?

I work for a small company that provides educational services. We are quite active on social media in an attempt to increase traffic to our main website and push up our status on Google.
We create various types of social media posts including memes and short videos. We currently post these directly onto the social media sites.
My question is whether we could better serve our website by having them originate there (our main domain) and to then link to them on FB, twitter etc.
Another idea is to embed the code from our Youtube channel onto our main webpage and to then link from social media.
Would either of these have any impact on the traffic to our main page?

A few years back I remember reading an article that talked about female characters in media, specifically that a fifty-fifty split of men and women was seen as "mostly women", and a lower ratio (1/3? 1/4?) was seen as "even". I seem to recall "The Simpsons" was used as an example? Maybe it was just mentioned. Anyway, I would like to read that article again but my google-fu is failing me. Halp?

Please help. I work for a language school that teaches Mandarin Chinese to foreigners inside China. We specialize in one month intensive teaching for beginners. We want to increase our social media presence and have some (even though we do say so ourselves) excellent stand alone ideas to do this.
They are educational free formats that allow people to study Chinese online in creative ways. We don't know the best way to present them though. Should they be 'onsite' options through our main webpage,or would they be better served as stand alone entities with their own page and an affiliation to our main company website?
Any thoughts and shared best practice would be greatly appreciated.
