I'm hoping to take classes as a non-degree student and looking for options. [more inside]
Hi there, Yelp alternative. Visiting the Clark in the afternoon on a Saturday. Looking for an afternoon restaurant. Layers of fussiness inside. [more inside]
Tell me about your excellent barber in the greater Gardner/Leominster/Fitchburg area who keeps up with current trends! Criteria: Knows what the hell I'm talking about when I tell them I'm trying to achieve a "slicked back undercut". [more inside]
I just moved to Boston and don't know much of anything about it's history as a music town. I mean I'm generally aware of classic rock bands being from Boston, and then Mission of Burma, but what else? What books, documentaries, websites, magazine archives, etc should I read to find out more about the Boston (and surrounding area) scene? [more inside]
I know Waltham isn't regarded as highly as Newton, Lexington, Belmont, etc. This I know. What about the culture of the schools, especially the High School? Do they have a good.PTO? Is there much of an issue with drugs or violence? Are there any gifted or accelerated programs? [more inside]
What options are there to legally provide massage/relaxation services without a massage license? [more inside]
For my birthday in mid-July, my wife and I would like to go whale-watching somewhere in New England. Given our location (SE Connecticut), we would prefer not to drive quite so far as Maine, but Portsmouth would be OK. We're looking for recommendations/horror stories about locations, companies, and so forth. Tell us your New England whale-watching experiences! [more inside]
I was recently looking at my family tree and curious about the lives of my ancestors, many of whom emigrated to Massachusetts/Rhode Island/New York from England in the early 1600s. Especially interested in books about Rhode Island and particularly anything about Roger Williams or Stephen Hopkins, who are great-great-etc grandfathers of mine (but also interested in just learning about everyday life for colonists, and what the transition was like moving from England). Assume I know little beyond the basics of American history.
Due to a whole series of unpleasant events, I am looking for an apartment in the Brighton/Allston/Watertown area on a somewhat tight budget and very short notice — we need to move in by mid-July at the very latest. I just moved here, and don't really know how things work in this area, but I've already come close to exhausting what is listed on Craigslist/Padmapper. What else should I be trying? Other places to look for listings? Should I be working with a realtor? (And if so, how do I find one?) Etc etc etc. [more inside]
Do you know of a place that could house lots people for a week in the Northeast? [more inside]
Looking for a snuggly kick-back but still a little fancy and yet not insanely expensive restorative non-kid trip within a four hour radius of Western Massachusetts. We like: beer, food, being able to toddle back to a hotel after a drinky dinner, soft lights, being able to talk about grown up things ... [more inside]
Due to an overly elaborate inside joke, I need to treat my girlfriend to an anniversary dinner — either out at a restaurant or cooked at home — involving some sort of rarely-served meat. (Last year's iteration of this was in Texas and involved barbecued raccoon from a friend who hunts.) This year we'll be in Northampon, MA, with access to a rental car and a decently well-stocked kitchen. Suggestions?
Hey Internet! I'm looking for a room near Tufts' Medford/Somerville campus. I looked through Craigslist and PadMapper. Is there anywhere else I should be looking? What rents are reasonable? Any other housing-related tips you'd like to share? [more inside]
I'll be in Boston with my kids for one day (two nights) in February. They're ages 8 and 12. Too old for the Children's Museum, too young to be set free to wander on their own. What should we do? [more inside]

I'd like to purchase an antique map (or a good reproduction) as a Christmas present, and I'm having trouble figuring out where to shop. [more inside]
(Posting on behalf of a friend): I was convicted of a DUI in March 2014, and am trying to pick up the pieces. I need to pay for an SR-22 which is insurance on my license. If I do not pay for this insurance my license will lapse. The policy is less expensive if I also insure a vehicle but I will not need a car in the coming months and cannot afford the payments. I need help figuring out if it would be smarter to not pay for any insurance (letting my license lapse), to sell the car and use the profits to pay the SR-22, or to just keep the car (though I really do not want to). My girlfriend's insurance expires August 23rd and her new one does not kick in till November (she just got a job as a teacher after being in grad school full time). She is 35 and we live in Mass. She needs some form of temporary health insurance for those two months. She has been online and could not find anything like that for people over 30 in our zipcode.
When I was very young, my dad took me camping to see the Perseid meteors; it was one of the defining experiences of my life. Now I am grown and he is nearly old, and I would like to turn it around. Help me find a suitable mountaintop in New England to go camping with my dad; somewhere where we won't have to see anyone else. Details within. [more inside]
We've been paying insurance for a car we traded in to a dealer three years ago. At the time, the dealer gave us the plates for our new car and contacted our insurance agent for us. How do we get this refund? [more inside]
Looking for off-leash places especially. [more inside]
BostonFilter: I'm looking for neutral grain spirits to make tinctures with. I haven't found anything in the liquor store higher than 40% ABV vodkas. Apparently Everclear isn't available in Mass (?), but is there anything else I can get ahold of? Huge bonus points for Cambridge/Somerville, and I can't go to weird exurban car-needing places.
Is there anywhere I'm welcome to go fossil hunting along the Connecticut River in MA? Greenfield's closest, but down toward Springfield isn't out of the question.
I live in Deerfield, MA, USA. These sounds are coming from a tree across the street. Both the whimpering-pup sounds and the louder squeals/screeches are coming from the same place. Any idea who is making these sounds?
Long story short, I moved from Texas to Massachusetts at the beginning of June this year while my car's registration in Texas was expired since April. I knew I was going to be moving very shortly so I purposely chose not to re-register my vehicle, which was my mistake. I own the fact that I am at 100% fault for this. [more inside]
My neighbor and I both live on the top floor of our condo building. He wants to fix his AC/heating system inside the shared attic, and is asking to use an attic entryway inside my apt. What can I do to protect myself in case his contractor damages my things? Please help. Thanks. [more inside]
An unknown person let themselves into my neighbors apartment, stole her pot, and then left, and my landlord isn't doing anything about it. I'm wondering what I should do now, if anything. Details at length inside. [more inside]
Friend of a friend needs a lawyer for a maternity leave denial. Massachusetts filter. [more inside]
We live in an apartment in Massachusetts and are expecting a baby four months in the future. We think the apartment may not be deleaded. I know that a landlord is legally obligated to delead an apartment that a child will live in, and I assume that covers the case in which a child appears after the lease has started. If that's the case, how does deleading work when tenants are already living in the apartment, and is it logistically feasible for us to go through that process? [more inside]
We are buying a house -yay! But the house needs renovation work done - eek! While we have previously owned a house, it was 10 years ago, in another state, and never had any major renovations. We are scheduled to close on April 30, so we are trying to figure out what kinds of professionals we need and how to find/hire them. [more inside]
Our mechanic has fixed our car from last week's question, but now I think we'll probably just get another used car. The Boston winters have convinced us we'd like something with good handling in ice and snow. We're not really SUV people. Because of their reputation for reliability (and ubiquity in the region), we're leaning towards a used Outback. Do you have any recommendations or tips 1) about buying a used car in MA generally, and 2) about buying a used Outback in particular? [more inside]
Mr. Llama's birthday is coming up and I'd like us to get away for a night or two. We're in New England, and we can't travel far. Can you recommend possible destinations that meet our criteria? [more inside]

This is a question about Massachusetts employment law. After a company has had a round of layoffs, I'm told there is a length of time they must wait before they can re-fill those same positions with new people. How long is this waiting period? [more inside]
I'm worried about my ability to prove residency in Massachusetts to convert my out-of-state license. (In particular, the fact that no photocopies are allowed.) [more inside]
We're driving in snowy weather for the first time in our lives. Do we need snow tires, or is it better to just get a new set of all weathers if we are spending the money? Cars are a Corolla and a Focus.
Hello all, I was laid off from my job in July and went to Europe for a few months. Now that I am back in USA, I tried to sign up for affordable care act via www.mahealthconnector.org/ only to find out this site is the reincarnation of the devil. I cannot finish my application for this health insurance because I get stuck on a page that requires me to put in my employer info. Now since I am unemployed I obviously do not have an employer. This site literally will not let me complete the rest of the application without entering a whole bunch of information on my current employer which does not exist! How on earth do people without jobs apply for this?? Does anyone else run into this frustrating issue? Is there any other health insurance I can sign up for?
I will be taking my first road test on Monday, in Massachusetts (specifically, Lynn). I'd like to hear from people who've taken this test in the past. What were you asked to do? I'd particularly like to hear from people who've failed the test: where did you fall down? [more inside]

Asking for a friend. She has decided to divorce her husband after 21 years of marriage. Her lawyer has said that, although he makes six figures annually, because he is retirement age and has many debts, she is not entitled to very much. Apparently she can't get any alimony nor money from the retirement account, and she doesn't have rights to the house. They are in Massachusetts. [more inside]

YANML. I know this. I have an LLC registered with the State of Massachusetts that I meant to dissolve a couple years ago but never got around to and forgot about. A couple days ago, I received a letter from the state saying that I had to a file report and pay a $500 fee last year. Is there any way I can tell them I wanted to dissolve it before that and start the dissolution process, thereby avoiding the filing fee?
It has been too long since I went to a costume party, but I am not really into the Halloween bar scene. I am looking for: a crowd wearing nice costumes in an interesting venue; something that's kind of special. I am not looking for: "I'll wear a bathrobe and say I'm a Jedi, let's go drinking!" crowds. More Venetian carnival, less "this fuzzy pimp hat was all that was left at iParty." [more inside]
I'm white, I have curly hair and I live in the Boston area. Around this time of year, every year, I have massive problems with frizz (my hair doubles in size, and not in a good way). I don't have this problem when I'm a few states south, in the tri-state area. I'm seeing tons of girls with curly hair in Massachusetts right now who don't have this problem. What's the secret? [more inside]
Several years ago I read about an abandoned stretch of highway midway up the North Shore in Massachusetts, possibly in Danvers or Peabody. Google has turned up this page about an abandoned road in Newburyport, and a reference to an unfinished onramp in Lynn. I could have sworn there was something north of Lynn and east of the Merrimac River, but all my searches have redirected me to those two pages. Am I hallucinating this, or is there an unused onramp or stretch of road south of Newburyport and north of Lynn?
I'm thinking of taking a postdoc in at UMass in Worcester, MA but am having trouble ironing out cost of living expenses. Where can I can I afford to live around there, preferably with a (relatively speaking) easy commute to Boston? [more inside]
