I wat to create a detailed map of dive site including elevation data. I'm looking for a straight forward simple cartograph software which allows me to create these underwater maps. I'm using a mac. Windows tips are also most welcome.

Where can I find a freeware or shareware download for Mac OS X that will allow me to plug in numerical data (e.g., public library funding in a given year) for each U.S. State and get a map of the USA that displays color-coded states? Like the infamous red / blue states map, which also has county breakdowns.

What's the best way to make maps like this and this for use in a report. The images generated by Google, etc are all a bit rubbish looking. Bonus points for free/cheapware or webapps.

I'm trying to figure out a way to convert a vector map image, in Adobe Illustrator, to a .shp shapefile usable in GIS software like ArcSoft. I know very little about ArcSoft and shapefiles. Is there a plugin? Is there some intermediary format I could export from one and import to the other? Is this simply impossible? My research thus far has been fruitless, so any help would be much appreciated.
