I accidentally opened a piece of mail that was addressed to the former owner of my house. Due to the nature of the mail I feel I should make sure it gets to either the addressee or the sender (a person, not a company I can easily call up). But how should I do that when I've obviously opened it? [more inside]

A postage meter was moved from a branch office in California to an office in Vermont. The machine has yet to be updated. Specifically, it still prints "sent from 90210" instead of "sent from 05602." Will the post office in Vermont return the metered mail because of this zip code discrepancy?

I have an envelope that's about 10"x13". Inside, I have maybe 15 pages of college application materials. And I have $3.90 in stamps. How the hell do I know how much postage I need for this thing? Should I try to figure it out myself, or should I just take it to the post office and have them figure it out?

My boss purchased a rather pricey item on eBay and we have not received it. She did not request signature confirmation or shipping insurance. She did receive a USPS tracking number and, according to that number, it's already been delivered... 'cept, you know, it hasn't been. Are we SOL?

Bah! My online store made a sale on April 24th for around $40, and shipped out the order USPS Priority Mail. Delivery confirmation (no insurance, no signature involved) indicates it was delivered on April 26th. Today, I get an e-mail from the customer asking where it was. A correspondence later, the situations seems that she never received it. [more inside]

US Postal Service collection times: those blue boxes at the post office or street corners often list 2 or 3 different collection times. Does my mail really get to its destination faster by my getting it in the box by 12pm as opposed to 5pm?

When I send mail internationally (say, from the US to Italy) who pays for it? I pay the USPS but at some point the mail presumably gets handed off to the Italians who have not been paid by me to deliver the mail. Does the USPS pay Italy for their end of the delivery? Is there some sort of reciprocal treaty?

What's the most you can cost someone who sent you a prepaid business reply mail envelope? I just got one of these, fishing for a tax-deductible donation to a 501(c)(3) group, one I would pay money to see stomped to death.
I want to hear from people who've done this and suffered no repercussions, as well as any former or current USPS employees who might know where that fine line is. I'm also open to anything that keeps me on the mailing list, but still costs them more in postage than it's worth.
