My MacBook Pro is broken. Or, more precisely, its cd drive and hard drive are kaput. Repair of either of these parts is not an option. I'd like to not replace them, and simply have it run a live linux distro off of a usb drive. Possible?

Simple (I hope) question: I'm thinking that in the next year I might buy a Mac. I'm also interested in Linux, though, and I've thought about buying a "white box" PC to run Linux and open-source apps. I don't really understand the relationship between OSX and 'nixes all that well. Does OSX run Linux-type programs too? (TIA)

This may be more of a Slashdot question, but as those super geeks would rip me to ribbons; I am asking yall instead. I have recently become enamored with the idea of running MK Linux or PPC Linux on an old beige Macintosh. What is the best distro to use? What is the ideal beige Macintosh model (Performa 5200CD?) Have any of you actually done this? Is ALL the hardware supported? Any horror stories? Thanks!
