I own a 2008 macbook pro which is still doing okay, but I have been running through power adapters like mad. I've had two of the inexpensive knockoff variety quit in the last year, but the expensive apple-brand ones don't seem any better. What should I do? [more inside]
My vintage 2008 Macbook is eagerly gazing at the pasture that has been beckoning it for a few years now. I have replaced the hard-drive and maxed out the RAM, but the poor little guy is simply ready for a well-deserved rest. So - what's next for me and when? Macbook Pro? Air? iMac? iPad? Difficulty level: incorporating moderate music production, Netflix, general web use, somewhat limited funds, and massive over-thinking. [more inside]
My 2011 MacBook Pro seems to be showing its age. I'm on the edge, performance is a little sluggish, but I don't need an upgrade. I am considering switching to a 2014 Mac Mini or holding off another mac development cycle or two. Will the Mac Mini feel like an upgrade? More detailed specs below. [more inside]

In my mid-2012 MacBook Pro, I recently removed my optical drive and replaced it with a second hard drive (SATA HDD, not SSD), following these instructions. Everything seems to be running fine, except now my trackpad and keyboard (both built-in, not USB-connected) will occasionally freeze for about 5 seconds, seemingly at random. [more inside]
I need an external mic or webcam that will work with my aging MacBook Pro in order to tutor via Skype and to create recordings of my screen for video tutorials. I can't use the built-in mic because I want to do all of this with the laptop shut and hooked up to a Cinema Display. [more inside]
I know I want a Mac and not a PC. I'm fairly sure I want a MacBook Pro and not an Air. Help? [more inside]

Dear Mefites, what are your suggestions, tips and resources for someone wanting to improve the way they use their Mac? [more inside]
I'm suddenly in the market for a new MacBook Pro. I'm trying to decide between the Retina and non-Retina options. I remember hearing a while back is that the Retina display would lag or stutter sometimes, especially when switching between Spaces. Is that still true? I use the heck out of spaces and usually have an external monitor as well. If you have a recent rMBP, any testimonials would be much appreciated. Thanks!
My MacBook Pro (15-inch, few years old) just crashed. I'm thinking I should pack up and head over to Tekserve now (my AppleCare is still in effect), but can anyone tell me what might have happened and whether it's a bad idea to try to reboot? [more inside]
I've just installed Office 2011 on a new MacBook Pro via Office 365. When I create a table in Word and write content in each row, Word hides the content of the last row when viewed on screen. Any ideas how to stop this? [more inside]
Need to replace my laptop at short notice. Should I blow my bank account and get a MacBook Air, or pick up a Chromebook (or the like) as a stopgap measure while continuing to save up for the Pro I really want? [more inside]
I am running OS X 10.8 on a mid 2007 MBP. Yesterday I noticed my laptop was running very hot, the screen was off and it wasn't responsive to the mouse/keyboard. I manually rebooted, and now I am unable to boot into OS X. [more inside]

It seems I've tried a bunch of different products to clean the screen of my MacBook Pro and I've not found anything that doesn't leave a streaky mess. Any products/tips/tricks you've found to get a streak free screen? [more inside]
My Applecare for my Macbook Pro will expire in a month. I haven't used it for anything save a replacement charger, but I'm wondering whether there are any diagnostic tests or lists of common problems I can check against to see whether there are any repairs I should ask for. It's totally fine if the answer is a simple "no" - I understand for hardware, if it doesn't fail right out of the box or in the first few uses, it's probably fine. I just want to double check!
I have a late 2008 15" MacBook Pro. I'd like to cram it full of RAM and upgrade to a pretty high capacity SSD - is this worth doing or will the graphics cards, monitor, other relatively unreplaceable elements fry soon? [more inside]
My mid-2010 Macbook Pro doesn't handle streaming video or huge Excel files well. Would a comprehensive upgrade solve my problems, or am I better off buying a new computer? [more inside]
I've got an older MacBook Pro. I'm on 10.8.5 right now. I'm wondering if I should upgrade to 10.9 or let it be. Specs to follow... [more inside]
I'm in grad school. My friend/classmate accidentally knocked over her water bottle on Wednesday and drenched my MacBook Air (which was on the classroom table about three feet away), killing at least the motherboard (per the repair shop where I took it) and possibly other things as well. It will cost at least $520 to repair; I'm out of AppleCare coverage because I got my computer a bit over a year ago. I have two questions. [more inside]
In light of revelations that some folks can look at me over the internet through my webcam without me knowing, I would like to have a solution to this problem. I was thinking that taping over the webcam would work well, but it might also look tacky, and might also add a residue to my computer that I would not like. Is there a kind of tape that would look good on a unibody macbook pro? How would I make that tape look good? What sort of tape would be suggested for its no residue, opaque characteristics? Is there a better solution than tape, like a well-thought out kickstarter project or something of that nature? Please help me with my paranoid bougie computer problem.
Is it worth it to buy a MBP without a super drive? [more inside]
Needing to get a new portable, because the battery in my workhorse laptop is borked, I ordered a refurbished 13" MacBook Pro - which I am typing on at the moment. So far, it seems fine for what I need, but I was wondering whether the hive mind could think of a better solution. Generic snowflake detail inside. [more inside]
My macbook pro battery life is awful, and it shouldn't be. What can I do about that? [more inside]
When I burn a CD, some songs that sound fine in iTunes on my computer will inexplicably have between 3-20 seconds of 'silence' at the beginning, thus causing my car's CD player to skip them if I don't fast forward to the actual music...WTF? (do my best to give some Tech Specs inside!) [more inside]
I'm in the market for a new 15-inch MacBook Pro. I'll be maxing out the RAM and flash storage. Should I spend an additional $100 to get the model with discrete graphics? Would there be any benefit at all from doing that? Or will the integrated Intel Iris Pro Graphics be sufficient? The discrete graphics option is an NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB of GDDR5 memory. Without any warning, my Macbook froze and now won't boot. I'm trying to determine whether it's fixable or a total loss. (Technical details inside.) [more inside]
This post about gadget fatigue on the blue prompted this question. I just bought the most recent iteration of the iPad. I have an old iPhone and an even older MacBook Pro, and after less than 24 hours with the iPad, I’m getting the impression that the it's superfluous to my life. Please present arguments to the contrary, so that I can make up my mind whether to return it. (I've read this Ask, and this Ask, and this Ask, but the tech changes so quickly that much of what is suggested there is dated, and plenty more apps/uses have come about since those were posted.) I need luggage for three situations and I'm hoping I can wind up with just two items (and not spend too much money). I need a rolling case for my MacBook Pro and books for school, a piece of carry-on luggage for an upcoming trip, and a sturdy but not too heavy suitcase. [more inside]
I'm thinking about giving my 2009 MacBookPro to my 10 year old for his birthday. The main thing he does on the computer is play Minecraft. Google is being unhelpful, as are the various Minecraft discussion forums I've looked through. So I thought I'd turn to AskMe. [more inside]
My early-2007 Macbook Pro is still going strong, besides the fact that it gets very hot and that the battery is kaput. The biggest problem I have with it is that the OS (v.10.5.8) is far enough out of date that I can't update most of my software, and have a hard time acquiring new software. Is it worthwhile to upgrade to the latest version of OS X, or would I be better of just springing for a new mac? [more inside]
I am considering buying a new Macbook Pro with a solid-state drive, but the drives built into the laptop do not offer enough storage for me. If I buy an external Thunderbolt hard drive, will the laptop be able to seamlessly play music and video from files stored on the hard drive, or is there likely to be an annoying lag? Apart from portability, are there any technical issues with relying on an external hard drive for primary storage and everyday use? I am a fairly ordinary but media-heavy user.
I have a 2009 MacBook Pro with a Mini DisplayPort, and a flatscreen tv that has DVI and VGA input ports. I cannot find a cable for sale that will let me hook the computer up to display the desktop on the TV. (pics of ports inside) [more inside]
So I've upgraded my router recently (old one was 10+ years old). I also have a nice Samsung Smart TV, and a Macbook Pro laptop. I use the router simply for wireless internet on the laptop, and some basic apps on the smartTV. What else can I do? [more inside]
I upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard, and now all audio crackles in Chrome. YouTube, Bandcamp, SoundCloud.. everything. It starts out clear and then after about 10 seconds it begins to crackle and gradually increases until the audio is unlistenable. Crackle volume changes with volume controls but intensity does not. Audio is fine using Safari and Firefox or any desktop application like iTunes or Spotify. [more inside]
I recently acquired a new MacBook Pro, with a retina display. It's a sealed unit, with no user-replaceable battery, so I'm obviously interested in maintaining the battery life. I noticed that the new T-shape mag safe connector is not very grippy, and falls out all the time. So I called Apple to see whether the constant unplugging/plugging was a bad idea, and the rep actually said at one point that it was a bad idea to keep the laptop plugged in when it was charged (with the green LED showing in the adapter). I confirmed that this was what he was saying. So does anyone know if this is true? Because I've always kept my laptops plugged in, all the time. [more inside]
I can print fine using a app from my Ipad 2 -- I just installed the printer app on my work PC, which is linked to my printer, and on my Ipad 2. Voila! But I can't figure out how to print to my work printer from my beautiful Macbook Pro. [more inside]
Hi there, I have a mid-2009 MacBook Pro, which is getting noticeably slower, the battery needs replacing and the fan is extremely noisy. All this has lead me to believe that this laptop is coming to the end of its "natural" lifespan and I will soon be due an upgrade (however I accept I may be wrong here). Coupled with this, I am about to move into a new place, meaning I will have a lot less need for a portable laptop, since I will be working from home most days. With this in mind, I was thinking about getting a desktop iMac as my "main" computer and using my old MacBook as and when I needed to. So my question is, should I... A) Attempt to prolong my MacBooks life by having it serviced / refurbished, and buy a desktop monitor to plug it into when I work from home. B) Buy a new MacBook Pro, and a desktop monitor (because this would be cheaper than the third option, which is to...) C) Buy a desktop iMac, and continue to use my old MacBook as a spare / portable option. Thanks.
Today, at work, my 2012 Macbook Pro (non-retina) started flickering while plugged into an external monitor. Unplugging and replugging the external monitor fixed it. However, when I got home, the Macbook started flickering again. I forced a reboot, which resulted in the screen flickering and going black. I have a Genius Bar appointment tomorrow, but I am curious what the Hive Mind thinks the problem might be.
Just did my taxes, and I'm getting a refund! Help me pick out the right SSD for my aging laptop... [more inside]
I have a late 2008 MBP, 8GB RAM, with an SSD, running Lion without problems. Should I upgrade to Mountain Lion right now? Have the battery life and other issues been resolved? I'd like to upgrade because I've finally encountered a program that requires Mountain Lion and I'd like to use it. [more inside]
If I buy an external computer cam and mic, can I make video calls on Skype on a MacBook Pro when it's closed and connected to an old Cinema Display monitor that has no built-in camera? [more inside]
I have a 13" Macbook Pro that I bought in late 2010. Lately, it's been doing some odd things. Occasionally it makes a sound that I can only describe as an "electronic fart". Like a short buzz that lasts less than a second. The second thing is that sometimes parts of the screen go black. These things only happen once every few days. [more inside]
Today, I purchased a new 13" MacBook Pro, model MD101LL/A, which I believe is a June 2012 model. I have an existing, working 13" MacBook Pro from early 2011. Can I just pull the hard drive out of the old one and stick it in the new one, or should I restore from a backup? Also, what are the odds the memory in the old one will work in the new one? Both are Core i5. [more inside]
