I’m planning to buy either a used Air or a new MacBook, though I wish I could wait for the next update instead. The Air has been on "Don't Buy" status at MacRumors for months. But a MacBook with comparable performance could be $500 more including the port adapters I’d need. (Is it ok to buy those cheap, from third party manufacturers, and to daisy-chain them?) My Mid-2010 Macbook Pro, which currently runs Mavericks, has been fuddy-duddying around as of late. Beachball city. As such, I finally pulled the trigger on upgrading my hardware: I bought a new SSD (the Samsung 850 EVO 500gb 2.5'') and 16gb of RAM. I'm preparing to install the SSD, and am trying to figure out how best to migrate my data from the old hard drive to the new one. I'm also wondering whether now would be a good time to upgrade to El Capitan. Help? [more inside]
I was replacing a trackpad in my MacBook Pro (about 2012 model). After I booted back up the keyboard stopped responding. Is there anything obvious I could have unplugged or damaged to make this happen?
Hi, I've been trying to find a long-lasting laptop/ultrabook. I'm querying MF for suggestions. The problem is that the actual performance of the laptops, once you get them, is materially different from the manufacturer's supposed battery life. For instance, I bought a Lenovo T450 which is supposed to have a massive battery, only to find out that the life is 6 hrs tops, when new. And the laptop itself is a heavy beast. I have looked at the XPS13, and am considering the Macbook Air 13", upon which I'd run Windows (because I need Windows for work). Any advice?
How will stickers/decals on the lid of my (2014-ish) MacBook Pro impact the heat dissipation? Major impedence, or negligible?
My much-loved MacBook Pro 15" (late 2008) logic board is dying. Replacing the laptop is proving complicated. Please help me to understand how people manage their data in a post-HDD world. [more inside]
Currently, my brother is using my old MacBook pro from 2006. It has started to become unreliable - I'm looking for a replacement for him. [more inside]
So, I have a lovely new 12" Macbook. Slim, light, adequate for my needs and very sexy. I need a case for it. [more inside]
I'm looking at the MacBook Retina. I see it only has a USB C port. And there is a dongle from Apple that supposedly allows one to hook this thing up to hdmi. Please tell if you have used this because reviews are all over the place. Bonus: is there a dock or hub that has both ethernet AND hdmi? [more inside]
My macbook (air, Yosemite 10.10.3) keeps trying to connect to a BT wifi network, prioritizing it over my normal home network. How can I make it stop? [more inside]
I'm using a new MacBook Air. Audio works fine on every other app, but when I try to use Hangouts I can not hear anything. Other side can hear me. I've gone through the troubleshooting checklist. I've shut down Skype. I've tried Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. I can pick up my phone and join the same call and hear just fine, so it's not a firewall issue. "Don't use Hangouts" is not an option as I have a weekly call with a bunch of partner and the call is via Hangouts. Any Mac experts have an idea of what else I can try?
I leave my Macbook on during the day while at work. Spouse spilled water on it at some point, the area around the keyboard is damp and the computer won't start up. Any chance of resurrection?
I'm leaving a job that provided me with a new-ish MacBook Air, and I need to replace it. I'm torn: Macbook, Air, Pro, retina, non-retina, desktop Mac, etc. My entire digital life - home and work -is with Apple, so I am not interested in PCs. Help me overthink a plate of pretty, functional, slightly-overpriced beans. [more inside]
Looking for some assistance/guidance in setting up my MacBook Air to my old settings after a factory reset/format. [more inside]
My new work computer is a 13" Retina Macbook Pro, and I am looking for a new bag to use for commutes and work travel. This has all led to looking at vertical bags, like the Tom Bihn Ristretto. Are there other bags in this vein that I should be looking at as well? [more inside]
I have a pretty old MacBook pro (probably 7-8 years old) that's very sluggish and glitchy. I'd like to relegate it for the single purpose of running Logic Pro. It currently runs Logic but very slowly and crashes often. Can I like wipe the whole thing somehow and make it do nothing but run Logic well? [more inside]
I have a mid-2013 Macbook Air with 4GB of RAM. It's currently running Mavericks, and I would love to just keep it that way, but more and more software doesn't work with Mavericks. I would update, but I hear so many people who say that 4GB isn't enough and you need at least 8GB to run both Yosemite and El Capitan well and that performance is worse than on Mavericks. Normally, when I open up the Finder on my MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012, running OS 10.11.1) in the sidebar to the left of the window, I can see a list of my favorite folders. But lately, sometimes when I open Finder (or when I click "Browse..." to select a file for upload somewhere) the list of Favorites is often missing. Sometimes all that's left is "Media," sometimes it's "Shared." This makes it really difficult to navigate my computer. What is causing this, and how can I fix it?
My MacBook Pro was stolen last night. The disk was encrypted with FileVault and the login passwords were non trivial (good enough for petty thieves though probably not hackers skilled in the art). I told iCloud to lock it down and erase it on first contact. Will the thief and his friends be able to do anything with this machine, or is it just a paperweight at this point? [more inside]
I have a late-2008 MacBook running Yosemite with 2GB of RAM. For years I have had two external hard drives, one for my Surface Pro 2, and one for this Mac, or so I thought. But after plugging my Mac hard drive into my PC to look at the file list, I found that I could no longer mount the hard drive on my Mac (?!). All the files are still there, accessible and editable on my PC. This seems like witchcraft, but I'm sure there is a reasonable explanation. [more inside]
I bought an external battery (20800 mAh) for my oldish Macbook Air. But there is one thing I didn't think of: How do I plug my Macbook into an external battery that only has USB outputs?
We are buying a MacBook Air for our A+++ student. Is there anything to know besides the $100 student discount? Are there ever any sales prices tied to holiday buying? Is the AppleCare Protection plan worth it? [more inside]
I have a new Macbook Pro 13" that I purchased two weeks ago from the Apple store. It has had two minor (but possibly signs of something bigger?) issues so far, and today is the last day I can exchange it for another one. Would you exchange it in my position? See inside for the issues. [more inside]

I switched over to using my Macbook as my primary computer about a month ago, and turned on Time Machine. I'm backing up to an external 4TB Seagate HDD. Time Machine worked fine until a few days ago, when I noticed that the hourly backups weren't firing. Early 2015 13-inch Retina Macbook Pro running 10.10.5. [more inside]
I have a brand new Macbook which has been for the most part pretty great. But it's been doing a few odd things lately... [more inside]

I have a late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina which I recently upgraded to Yosemite. Ever since, when I'm trying to attach a file to an email (Gmail), when I try to click on the file in the finder window that opens, I get a spinning ball for about 8 seconds. Then it stops for a second or two, spins another second or two, and stops. I am then able to attach the file. This does not happen every time — sometimes (maybe one out of three tries) the attaching works correctly without hesitation. [more inside]
I've got a Mid-2013 MacBook Air (Intel Core i7; 1.7 GHz) with a 500 GB Apple SSD (SM0512F). I stay current on OSes. Should I engage Trim (e.g. via Trim Enabler)? If so, what do I need to know?
My iPhone 4s was stolen a few weeks ago. Last week my early 2011 MacBook Pro screen went dark and wouldn't come back on. [more inside]

I have a macbook with a 500GB hard drive. It has 196GB of free space right now. I just installed Google Drive. The moment set up was done and the drive folder ready to go, Finder's status bar started telling me that I have 140.9TB available. I checked Disk Utility and this is plainly rubbish - it's still at 196GB like it was 15 minutes ago. What gives? Where did the assessment of all that extra space come from, and how do I make it change back?
I need a new, powerfulish laptop, and I'm finding myself confused by the options. The consensus in previous AskMe's seems to be either Macbook or Lenovo, but I am wondering if there are newer options that I am not considering. I probably need this spelled out to me as if I am a not particularly bright child. [more inside]
I took apart my MacBook Air to replace the keyboard. When I pulled the old keyboard off a lot of the rivets broke off and stayed behind, stuck in the little holes. So how do I remove them? I've tried a Phillips screwdriver, tweezers even but it doesn't work. Right now my computer is in 100 pieces with deadlines looming. Any ideas would be appreciated from those brave souls who have tried this and succeeded! [more inside]
I own a 2008 macbook pro which is still doing okay, but I have been running through power adapters like mad. I've had two of the inexpensive knockoff variety quit in the last year, but the expensive apple-brand ones don't seem any better. What should I do? [more inside]
I'm trying to migrate from an old iMac to a new MacBook Pro, using Migration Assistant over wifi. It stalls out at "Less than a minute remaining." Apparently this is a common problem. Are there any workarounds - for example, backing up to an external disk and connecting that disk to the new computer? I do have Time Machine but it hasn't backed up in about 2 weeks (a different problem I've been dealing with). The old iMac has USB and Firewire ports; the new Pro has USB and Thunderbolt.
So I played a bit rough with my Macbook Pro and when I switched it on its hard drive started whirring/clicking loudly. This continued last night and this morning. However, it now seems to be working normally. Will this be OK or is the hard drive doomed?

Is there an equivalent to Can You Run It for Macs? I'm tired of never knowing ahead of time what games will run well (enough) on my MacBook Air, especially since I'm partial to graphics-heavy stuff like BioShock and Half-Life. If it helps, here are my details: Mid 2011 MacBook Air Processor: 1.8 Ghz Intel Core i7 Memory: 4 GB 1333 Mhz DDR3
I need advice on which monitors will work well for my older MacBook Pro. [more inside]
At work they are giving us new laptops to replace battered ancient ones. There are two choices: MacBook Air or Lenovo X1 Carbon. Which should I choose? [more inside]
I have a ~2012 Retina 15" that received some unexpected water in the vent under the LCD. The LCD no longer works (no backlight, no image), however the machine functions totally fine otherwise with a HDMI display attached. Is my best bet to sell it for parts? It seems as though a replacement logic board and installation would cost more than selling and buying a used machine.
What it says on the tin: I'm starting a professional Master's program in computer science this summer. I've decided to get a new laptop, since right now I have a 5-year-old Macbook that I do no serious work on, due to the oldness and slowness (and small screen). [more inside]

The new macbook is incredibly sexy. However, like most of you already know, it has tradeoffs compared to the current Air. So I was thinking that the 2nd generation next year might hit the sweet spot for me. [more inside]
