Normally, when I open up the Finder on my MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012, running OS 10.11.1) in the sidebar to the left of the window, I can see a list of my favorite folders. But lately, sometimes when I open Finder (or when I click "Browse..." to select a file for upload somewhere) the list of Favorites is often missing. Sometimes all that's left is "Media," sometimes it's "Shared." This makes it really difficult to navigate my computer. What is causing this, and how can I fix it?
My MacBook Pro was stolen last night. The disk was encrypted with FileVault and the login passwords were non trivial (good enough for petty thieves though probably not hackers skilled in the art). I told iCloud to lock it down and erase it on first contact. Will the thief and his friends be able to do anything with this machine, or is it just a paperweight at this point? [more inside]
I have a late-2008 MacBook running Yosemite with 2GB of RAM. For years I have had two external hard drives, one for my Surface Pro 2, and one for this Mac, or so I thought. But after plugging my Mac hard drive into my PC to look at the file list, I found that I could no longer mount the hard drive on my Mac (?!). All the files are still there, accessible and editable on my PC. This seems like witchcraft, but I'm sure there is a reasonable explanation. [more inside]
I bought an external battery (20800 mAh) for my oldish Macbook Air. But there is one thing I didn't think of: How do I plug my Macbook into an external battery that only has USB outputs?
We are buying a MacBook Air for our A+++ student. Is there anything to know besides the $100 student discount? Are there ever any sales prices tied to holiday buying? Is the AppleCare Protection plan worth it? [more inside]
I have a new Macbook Pro 13" that I purchased two weeks ago from the Apple store. It has had two minor (but possibly signs of something bigger?) issues so far, and today is the last day I can exchange it for another one. Would you exchange it in my position? See inside for the issues. [more inside]
Has anyone had success transitioning from MacBook to a Windows laptop running Linux? [more inside]
I switched over to using my Macbook as my primary computer about a month ago, and turned on Time Machine. I'm backing up to an external 4TB Seagate HDD. Time Machine worked fine until a few days ago, when I noticed that the hourly backups weren't firing. Early 2015 13-inch Retina Macbook Pro running 10.10.5. [more inside]
I have a brand new Macbook which has been for the most part pretty great. But it's been doing a few odd things lately... [more inside]

I recently noticed that there's a guest user profile on my mac laptop. I got the laptop a few months ago and never enabled the guest user profile. No one else lives in my home or has access to my computer. [more inside]
I have a late 2013 MacBook Pro Retina which I recently upgraded to Yosemite. Ever since, when I'm trying to attach a file to an email (Gmail), when I try to click on the file in the finder window that opens, I get a spinning ball for about 8 seconds. Then it stops for a second or two, spins another second or two, and stops. I am then able to attach the file. This does not happen every time — sometimes (maybe one out of three tries) the attaching works correctly without hesitation. [more inside]
I've got a Mid-2013 MacBook Air (Intel Core i7; 1.7 GHz) with a 500 GB Apple SSD (SM0512F). I stay current on OSes. Should I engage Trim (e.g. via Trim Enabler)? If so, what do I need to know?
My iPhone 4s was stolen a few weeks ago. Last week my early 2011 MacBook Pro screen went dark and wouldn't come back on. [more inside]
Is there a way for a closed laptop to automatically connect to the internet without someone opening it? [more inside]
I’m thinking about finally making the switch to a Macbook, but an older version. Is there any reason why this is a bad idea? [more inside]
I have a macbook with a 500GB hard drive. It has 196GB of free space right now. I just installed Google Drive. The moment set up was done and the drive folder ready to go, Finder's status bar started telling me that I have 140.9TB available. I checked Disk Utility and this is plainly rubbish - it's still at 196GB like it was 15 minutes ago. What gives? Where did the assessment of all that extra space come from, and how do I make it change back?
I need a new, powerfulish laptop, and I'm finding myself confused by the options. The consensus in previous AskMe's seems to be either Macbook or Lenovo, but I am wondering if there are newer options that I am not considering. I probably need this spelled out to me as if I am a not particularly bright child. [more inside]
I took apart my MacBook Air to replace the keyboard. When I pulled the old keyboard off a lot of the rivets broke off and stayed behind, stuck in the little holes. So how do I remove them? I've tried a Phillips screwdriver, tweezers even but it doesn't work. Right now my computer is in 100 pieces with deadlines looming. Any ideas would be appreciated from those brave souls who have tried this and succeeded! [more inside]
I own a 2008 macbook pro which is still doing okay, but I have been running through power adapters like mad. I've had two of the inexpensive knockoff variety quit in the last year, but the expensive apple-brand ones don't seem any better. What should I do? [more inside]
I'm trying to migrate from an old iMac to a new MacBook Pro, using Migration Assistant over wifi. It stalls out at "Less than a minute remaining." Apparently this is a common problem. Are there any workarounds - for example, backing up to an external disk and connecting that disk to the new computer? I do have Time Machine but it hasn't backed up in about 2 weeks (a different problem I've been dealing with). The old iMac has USB and Firewire ports; the new Pro has USB and Thunderbolt.
So I played a bit rough with my Macbook Pro and when I switched it on its hard drive started whirring/clicking loudly. This continued last night and this morning. However, it now seems to be working normally. Will this be OK or is the hard drive doomed?
Wifi is dropping on two Macbook Airs on certain networks but not on others while all other devices are fine. How to fix? [more inside]

Is there an equivalent to Can You Run It for Macs? I'm tired of never knowing ahead of time what games will run well (enough) on my MacBook Air, especially since I'm partial to graphics-heavy stuff like BioShock and Half-Life. If it helps, here are my details: Mid 2011 MacBook Air Processor: 1.8 Ghz Intel Core i7 Memory: 4 GB 1333 Mhz DDR3
I need advice on which monitors will work well for my older MacBook Pro. [more inside]
At work they are giving us new laptops to replace battered ancient ones. There are two choices: MacBook Air or Lenovo X1 Carbon. Which should I choose? [more inside]
I have a ~2012 Retina 15" that received some unexpected water in the vent under the LCD. The LCD no longer works (no backlight, no image), however the machine functions totally fine otherwise with a HDMI display attached. Is my best bet to sell it for parts? It seems as though a replacement logic board and installation would cost more than selling and buying a used machine.
What it says on the tin: I'm starting a professional Master's program in computer science this summer. I've decided to get a new laptop, since right now I have a 5-year-old Macbook that I do no serious work on, due to the oldness and slowness (and small screen). [more inside]

On my MacBook Pro: when I double click on the computer icon and it opens (to show me Applications, Library, etc) and then I double click within that to Users (which shows me Guest, Me, and Shared), if I then click on "Me" it tries to open with iPhoto, claiming I am an iPhoto Library. I just want to be a User folder again with typical subfolders like Documents, Music, Pictures. Help. [more inside]
Will this be good for XCode development, and can it drive two WQXGA (2560x1600) monitors reasonably well (no gaming)? [more inside]
The new macbook is incredibly sexy. However, like most of you already know, it has tradeoffs compared to the current Air. So I was thinking that the 2nd generation next year might hit the sweet spot for me. [more inside]
iTunes allowed me to download the new HBO Now app. Site said available on Apple products with IOS. But, while it took my money, I cannot find or load the downloaded app. I admit to being an idiot understanding and managing my Macbook. But shouldn't the download appear somewhere? Neither iTunes nor HBO make it easy to troubleshoot. Any ideas/ directions??
My vintage 2008 Macbook is eagerly gazing at the pasture that has been beckoning it for a few years now. I have replaced the hard-drive and maxed out the RAM, but the poor little guy is simply ready for a well-deserved rest. So - what's next for me and when? Macbook Pro? Air? iMac? iPad? Difficulty level: incorporating moderate music production, Netflix, general web use, somewhat limited funds, and massive over-thinking. [more inside]
I have an early 2014 MacBook Pro (HDMI and two Thunderbolt 2 ports). I also have a 20" Dell "UltraSharp" 2007WFP, purchased in 2005 with a resolution of 1680x1050. Retina display has ruined this monitor for me. Have monitors changed much in the past 10 years? Can I get a reasonably priced one that won't look like I took my glasses off? I'd like to pay less than $1,000, hopefully a lot less. Can I afford to get two?
I recently upgraded my MacBook Air to Yosemite. Everything seems to be fine, except for the fact that my iPhones text messages now happen on my computer (I think this is the continuity feature?). Anyway, I want this to stop. Of course, I Googled it before I posted, here, but the fixes that I found, don't appear to be relevant (they were from 2014 and probably from Mavericks). For example, one fix suggested opening the Messages app on your Mac (which I did) and open the Preferences menu, which I don't see. Can anyone help me stop this?? Thanks!
In the current MacBook Pro lineup, there's a $100 dollar price jump between the 2.9Ghz i5 processors and 3.1 Ghz i7 processors on the 128GB and 256GB models, but a $200 difference for the same upgrade on the 512GB model, all other specs remaining the same. Is there any reason for this, aside from Apple deciding that people willing to spend that much simply won't mind paying another $100?
Can you help me decide between the new MacBook announced today and the almost-as-new Dell XPS 13? [more inside]
I'm biting the bullet and switching to a MacBook Pro. I've found a good price for a second-hand one on Gumtree in the UK. What should I look out for when testing the machine before handing over the cash? [more inside]

I know I want a Mac and not a PC. I'm fairly sure I want a MacBook Pro and not an Air. Help? [more inside]
The time has come for a new computer. I've owned 3 laptops, all Macs. This one has lasted me 7 years, but it's getting to the point that I can't run, for instance, the latest version of Safari because it's not available for my device. Plus it's getting old and overheats quickly - I can't watch videos, and pages with a ton of photos are a PITA to open, and I can only open about 2 tabs before it starts to wheeze. [more inside]
The rubbery casing on my MacBook's charger just split after 6 months of use. I bought this one after the same thing happened to my last one. It's not splitting in the high strain zone near the body of the adapter, but part way down the cord. What's the best way to prevent the cord from splitting further? I've tried electrical tape previously, but it doesn't hold up well and leaves a lot of goopy adhesive behind. Thanks!
When syncing my iPhone 5 to my Macbook Pro, every time I connect it it tries to load about 5 games from my apps collection from the Macbook to the phone. It's always the same games, and this is a new problem within the past month or so. I haven't updated the OS or anything else -- is there some "autosync" option with certain games that I need to turn off? It's a pain to have to delete them every other day.
I'm suddenly in the market for a new MacBook Pro. I'm trying to decide between the Retina and non-Retina options. I remember hearing a while back is that the Retina display would lag or stutter sometimes, especially when switching between Spaces. Is that still true? I use the heck out of spaces and usually have an external monitor as well. If you have a recent rMBP, any testimonials would be much appreciated. Thanks!
A few months ago I moved into a new apartment, and decided to get one of these industrial shelving units - something like this to use as a desk/bookshelf/musical gear shelf. Everything works great, except when I plug my macbook into its charger and start typing. If my hands are on the aluminum body of the macbook and my wrists brush up against the metal frame of the shelving unit, I get a sharp shock, nothing too bad, but painful and annoying. [more inside]
My girlfriend would like it if her old MacBook Pro could run faster and have Windows. I don't know how to do this - that is where you come in... Help please? [more inside]
I run iTunes Match on four devices: a 2010 iMac, a 2012 iMac, a 2012 Macbook, and an iPhone 5c. One of my favorite playlists has gone missing on the phone, the Macbook, and the 2012 iMac, but not from the 2010 iMac. What's gone wrong and how can I fix it? [more inside]
I'm looking at buying a low-end Macbook for web browsing and MS Office (primarily Powerpoint). Basically, it's coming down to a 2009 or 2010 Macbook, as I'd prefer to run Yosemite, but I want to keep my budget below $500. I have used a friend's 2009 Macbook fairly regularly and I'm happy with its general performance, but I have a few specific questions. [more inside]
