I want to print US Topo Quads for use when hiking and backpacking. I usually toggle certain map elements off—especially "Land Cover"—but a printed copy still prints the land cover (using Adobe Reader, which is the only fully compatible Mac program (PDF) I've found). So: How can I print GeoPDFs from OS X that reflect the layers I toggle off or on? [more inside]
Mac OS 10.9.4. Prior to upgrading, there was an option in the Activity Monitor where I could set the dock icon to show a color-coded pie chart, indicating how much system memory was in use. Now, it's gone, and I would like to get it back - or something similar, if available. [more inside]

I just noticed that the clock on my Macbook Pro (running 10.9) is wrong, and when I went into Settings to see what is going on, I realized in the automatic time zone setting that my Macbook thinks it is in Alaska. Also, when I look up my computer in Find My iPhone, it too shows it being in Alaska. I am in Virginia. I have never been to Alaska. What is going on?
What do messages such as the following mean: Permissions differ on “Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/Resources/zh_TW.lproj/UniversalAccess.nib”; should be drwxr-xr-x ; they are -rwxr-xr-x . I know that the "drwxr-xr-x" and "-rwxr-xr-x" has some meaning in Unix, and I know OS X is based on Unix, but other than that, I don't really understand what I'm looking at. Anyone have any ideas?
I know that system optimizing/maintenance programs for Mac OS X are 90% pointless/useless, but I nevertheless get a pathological thrill out of using them. A person has to have hobbies. There are some pretty crazy ones on the Windows side, with all kinds of "program accelerators" and the like, but the ones I've used on OS X haven't been all that satisfying. Is there a program (paid or free) for OS X that's as insanely anal-retentive as System Mechanic Pro or TuneUp Utilities on Windows? I have used Onyx, Cocktail, iBoost, Magican, and Applejack. It doesn't have to actually accomplish anything -- it can even hose my system for all I care -- it just has to be crazily elaborate.
I'm currently filling out a profile on elance.com for web development jobs and am being asked to indicate which skills I possess. Some of the choices include MacOSX and Windows. I've also seen people list these on resumes(used to work in HR) in the same section where they list proficiency in MS Word, or even in a separate section for operating systems, for pretty much every kind of job, not just tech-related. I have a nifty little USB thumbdrive that I want to use to make backups of various documents; it will live on the powered hub in my office, as I'll only need to use it in the office. It's something of a pain to unplug and re-insert every day, or every time I need to leave the desk with my laptop. After ejecting, the drive is no loger visible using diskutil on the command line, tho I can see it in the system profiler. Is there a way to have the system recognize the device and mount it whenever the Macbook wakes from sleep? I've got sleepwatcher installed, but I'm not certain how to get the system to recognize the USB device without unplugging it and plugging it back in. Shutting down and restarting the mac every time I want to leave my desk with it is not a viable option, either. I'm running 10.7.5 on a Core i7 15" MBP.

I have a PCI-E SSD as my boot drive, and a win7-created RAID 1 on two 3TB drives. My boot drive has my user folder on it, but my documents, music, pictures, videos, etc folders shortcut to their respectable folders on the RAID. I would like this to be a full redundancy scheme and it is, but I've run into several nags and I would like to know how to fix them and prepare a fix-it plan before any of the drives fails. I’m trying to get Adobe Photoshop CS3 on Snow Leopard to show me the colors I expect. I’m using it to do some basic color selection, which will ultimately be pasted into a Python script that generates data graphics for use on the web. Part of my workflow involves screen captures from a browser that get round-tripped through Photoshop and into code, so I need basic RGB hex values to stay consistent through the process. How to connect a Mac OS X and a Windows XP machine, in order to have a PHP+MysqL application running on Windows but with browser and usage from Mac OS X?
I want to connect from a Mac OS X machine to a Windows XP running XAMPP (Apache, MySQL, PHP), in order to use an application running on the Windows machine. At the same time, I want to have the Mac OS X allowing Internet browsing, while Windows should be isolated from the Internet. Can it be done in some way, or can you suggest a possible setup close to that purpose? [more inside]

I have a Summer 2011 Mac Mini Server, running Lion. It serves as a common network share for backups, iOS syncs, etc., and media storage for an Apple TV. In coming months, I need to study for some Microsoft SharePoint certifications, and I'd like to do it at home. There are popular solutions I am aware of for desktop virtualization, but is anyone aware of a virtualization solution that will allow me to run multiple instances of Microsoft Windows on the Mac Mini Server to represent two or more servers for SQL Server, Active Directory, etc. Note that it's important for my purposes that these appear to be separate "machines" on the network, not services running on the same machine. Thanks in advance for any suggestions or assistance.

How do I get my iMac to wake on demand when it's asleep and asked to do so? These instructions from Apple are pretty straightforward on how to set it up for Bonjour, but I can't get it to work when it receives a request from Apple TV to wake up. It's an iMac running Lion with a Time Capsule set up as the Base Station. The iMac supports Wake on Demand over Wi-Fi and ethernet (it's connected over Wi-Fi). Time Capsule and Lion have the latest updates. I've found recommendations on Google but nothing has worked. Any troubleshooting pointers? (Bonus question: how can I get it to wake up from outside my network?) Thanks.

I have two of these Seagate 1TB external hard drives. Both formatted the same way: Mac OS Extended, GUID partition table. One has 400GB stored on it. When I drag and drop from one external hard drive to the other, after a while (anywhere around 8GB and up) I get an error 36 message - says I cannot read/write file. The lady on the phone for Seagate support says it's because you can't drag and drop large amounts of data via USB: in other words, it's not the drive's fault. Really? [more inside]
