A few days ago, I woke up to the sound of my MacBook fan on full and a totally unresponsive UI (as in I couldn't even turn up the brightness to see the screen, which I'd dimmed overnight). I rebooted, and everything was fine, except the Airport menu bar item said "No Airport card is installed". I've booted from the previous day's backup, I've run System Profiler from the OS X install DVD, and I even replaced the Airport card with a new one (bought from eBay, fitted according to the instructions on iFixIt).
