I am trying to access my home Mac remotely from the office (I use RealVNC). Unfortunately, there was an Internet outage, which is restored, but the Mac is no longer connected to the Internet. It is however connected to the router, which is accessible from the Internet. AFAIK the only way I can get the Mac reconnected is to reboot it. Is there any way I can reboot the Mac via the router? Or is there some other way to restore the Internet connection to the Mac remotely? I am pretty ignorant on these matters. Thanks for your help.
I am using Excel 2011 on Mac OS X Lion. I have a workbook created by a colleague with 25 worksheets in it. I would like to export all of these to individual csv files. Is there a way to do it all in one batch? [more inside]
I am loving Tina Marjarino's hair in the new Veronica Mars Movie clips & promo pictures. How do I get my hair to do this (seen here as well)? I don't know what to even call it to use my google-fu! I just know that it is fabulous and I need to do it. Currently I'm growing out a pixie, so I should have the correct amount of hair. Sorry for such a silly question!
I’m finally signing up for an unlimited Crashplan package this weekend. This is my first time using web storage for any of my backup needs. Can you let me know if I’m thinking correctly about 1) what I back up online and 2) what makes sense for backing up in the future? [more inside]
In my annals of bizarre tech questions this has to be the oddest. When I use safari as a web browser and try to view xkcd - the comic flashes on the screen briefly but then is replaced with an empty space. I tried reseting safari, manually deleting the cache file, disabling extensions but it keeps happening. More maddeningly it does not happen on any other website as far as I can tell. But - it also happens when i try to view xkcd images in newsblur (rss reader). and - when i open webinspector in safari the image displays in there just fine. (here is a screenshot ) I'm again going mad - what could be causing one website to blank its image? btw if i click "open image in new tab" then i can see the comic but not in a normal (or news blur) window. (running safari 6.0.4 on Mountain Lion 10.8.3)
I have a diary I write in every night. If it were to be lost or damaged I'd be sad, as I like to look back in it. Any advice on how to back it up? If I'm going to scan it, how do I organize it on my Mac? [more inside]

Trying to decide what to get, here. I've got an interal 750gb 5400 rm drive in the MBP that very occasionally throws up the dreaded "drive too slow" dialog in Logic at only 6 or 8 tracks of 24 bit 44.1 kHz. [more inside]
I finally switch back to Macs a couple years ago after a long time using mainly Windows, and I really miss Windows-style keyboard shortcuts, particularly the multi-part type with trigger letters. Are there utilities or settings I'm unaware of that can duplicate this on a Mac? [more inside]
I need a 3.5 inch disk drive to read some old documents on my Mac. The SmartDisk drive I just bought on Amazon was not well made, and today after very little use the drive head just fell out the front like a broken tooth. Can anyone recommend a more sturdy floppy disk drive? Would it be better to just get an enclosure for an old PC drive?
I'm about to buy a new MacBook Pro and there's only one thing I want to do when I first get it: "Ultimate" Triple Booting. But those instructions pre-date the OS X recovery partition introduced in 10.7 Lion. What do I need to know to get this working on 2013 hardware? [more inside]
So I used to have a router running Tomato firmware, which would show me the MAC addresses of every machine connected to the router. I have since switched to a faster ROSEWILL| RNX-N300RT router, but cannot locate the MAC addresses of connected machines. Is there a good, free utility for OS X or Windows 7 that will show me the MAC addresses of connected machines? [more inside]
I've been given a Mac mini and I'm dying to put it to fun or geeky use (already have a laptop so don't need to use it as a 'main' computer) but now that I'm staring at it I'm lost for inspiration. [more inside]
Back in the very late 90s a friend passed along a copy of a configurable Mac program that acted as sort of a screen saver (but I don't think that was its primary purpose) that produced different kinds of firework-like vector graphics that moved and changed in time to whatever music you had playing on the computer at the time. There were a number of variables you could control, including the design of the graphics, and maybe the colors, too. I remember on a couple of occasions needing to get a new copy and the only place I ever found it was on Macster; I'm almost positive it wasn't commercially available, but it was probably shareware. I want to say it was German, but I may be thinking of the game Oxyd. Does anyone remember what this program was, and if there is a modern-day equivalent for Mac?

Hi MeFi! This is My First Ask, so my apologies in advance if I do something incorrectly. My MacBook Air that I purchased Nov. 2012 from a Mac store freezes while streaming video from Netflix and Amazon. I have tried both Google and Safari, and it happens on both browsers ... [more inside]
I have a macbook air and a thunderbolt display and as of today, nothing happens when I plug the thunderbolt into the air-- I've tried resetting the pram/nvram and the smc on the macbook air, unplugging the display for several minutes and plugging it in with the macbook air off and on. System information says that there's nothing connected to the thunderbolt port. It worked just 3 days ago perfectly well, I've never had any problems with it in the year or so that I've had it. The power from the thunderbolt is getting to the air just fine. Anybody have any ideas or do I need to drag the thing in to an apple store?

I have a bug with my networking on OSX Mountain Lion, Put simply after an indeterminate, randomish amount of time (from 30 minutes to 10 hours) my laptop will simply stop loading or fetching new websites. This happens both over wired and wireless networks - In both cases the connection will appear to still be connected, but loading a webpage will just hang on "sending request" and a traceroute to google.com which works fine beforehand, just fails (nothing in terminal after the command). I've struggled but can't find much indication at all about this bug on the internet - can anyone help me fix this problem? [more inside]

I'm troubled by a mysterious bug on my MacBook Air. It manifests itself when I use Microsoft PowerPoint, but I believe it is a Mac-wide issue. It is extremely rare, impossible to reproduce on demand, and yet - when it strikes, it does so with a vengeance, and embarrasses me in front of a theater full of people. [more inside]

I type in multiple languages on Mac OS 10.6.8, and I need to be able to use keyboard shortcuts to jump immediately to specific input method rather than cycle through them with Command-Space. I have some apps installed under the admin account on my Mac. I set up standard user accounts on this machine, and I would like these users to access the already installed applications. When they run the app, it either opens in trial mode or asks for a serial number, even though they are already installed. Is there any way to do this?
I'd like to use the color labels in finder more extensively to help manage files all over my computer, not just for certain areas. Because the labels are system wide the names don't always match the intentions for certain folders labels tend to be cumbersome and not clear in meaning. Areas that I would like labels to work well in are: Downloads, work project folders, Desktop, Archive folders and media folders. Labels that work for one area don't mesh with others. Have you been able to figure out some names for the color labels that are elegant and useful in every user folder in the filesystem? I'm not looking for a way to use spotlight comments or another program to handle this - I'm specifically interested a solid naming convention for elegant, useful color label names. Thanks!
We had a power outage for about 3 hours yesterday evening, and when I restarted my Mac mini, I could not connect to the internet. I would like to take a calendar in iCal and turn it into a list of events with times / locations. Basically turn a schedule that I've built in iCal into format suitable for text distribution to a bunch of different people. Seems simple! But I can't figure it out. Copying and pasting events from iCal into a text document randomizes the order, which is a huge hassle. Help me, hive mind!
I, sadly, have to keep an eye on an Exchange e-mail account. There is no IMAP. Is there a small Mac app that will live in the menu bar and notify me of new e-mail that actually works? Bonus if I can quickly reply to the e-mail when it appears. [more inside]
I'm trying to play the SNES version of Shiren the Wanderer, with the English translation patch, on a Mac. The ROM without the patch works fine. When I put the patch in the same directory with the same base filename (the procedure for using a patch), the ROM loads and hangs. I'm using SNES9X as my emulator. Has anyone gotten this working? I'm willing to try any emulator.

I have a nifty little USB thumbdrive that I want to use to make backups of various documents; it will live on the powered hub in my office, as I'll only need to use it in the office. It's something of a pain to unplug and re-insert every day, or every time I need to leave the desk with my laptop. After ejecting, the drive is no loger visible using diskutil on the command line, tho I can see it in the system profiler. Is there a way to have the system recognize the device and mount it whenever the Macbook wakes from sleep? I've got sleepwatcher installed, but I'm not certain how to get the system to recognize the USB device without unplugging it and plugging it back in. Shutting down and restarting the mac every time I want to leave my desk with it is not a viable option, either. I'm running 10.7.5 on a Core i7 15" MBP.

In Mac Word 2011 - When editing a block of existing text, with the insertion point at the end of newly typed word, using command-B or command-I seems to style the word preceding the insertion point, and that I just applied styles to, rather than turning the styles off for the word I am about to type. I have a MacBook running OS X 10.6.8 and a Brother HL-2270DW printer. This morning I had to reset my entire system using Time Machine; everything else is up and running, but the printer doesn't work. I've tried reinstalling it with the printer setup disc, but the laptop won't detect our wireless connection when I get to that step (it suggests disabling my personal firewall, but I don't have one set up.), and the laptop won't let me add any printers in System Preferences. Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated, because I've spent all afternoon trying to figure this out.
