My pre-k boy LOVES video games and adventure/superhero TV shows. It would be great to harness some of that love for learning purposes. What are your recommendations for software or online games that do that? We're a Mac household.

I'm on a mac. A colleague sent me an Excel file (.xls) which I looked at in Excel 2011. It looks fine. I would like to save the file in some sort of text format, so that I can open Terminal and look at it in less. I realize that the columns won't align nicely, that's fine. What I don't want are all the weird characters that show up (from differently formatted line endings, etc). I've tried saving as "Tab delimited text," but that has the problem with the line endings. Which format should I use?

I've been using NetNewsWire on the mac since I helped beta test it prior to its release(11+ years), and need a new place to spend most of my internet time. More than 200 daily read feeds later I need a modern reader that can actually deal with modern flash/java/whatever items without crashing of freezing for minutes at time. Anyone recommend something that runs well on 10.8 and can hookup with my google reader account?

I have an old white Macbook (5ish years old). I want to give it to a friend, but want to do a wipe of the computer and reinstall the OS before giving it away. However, the DVD drive is dead, which prevents me from doing a clean wipe of the computer. How do I clean my computer to ensure all personal docs and file are gone, and/or do a full OS reboot so I can give it away?

Looking for software to automatically rate songs in my iTunes library on my Mac (Mountain Lion). I have
Autorate, but it hasn't been upgraded in three years and no longer works reliably with my iTunes library as of my upgrade to Mountain Lion. I've also searched
Doug's Applescripts and come up dry. Difficulty: large library (18K local songs) + iTunes Match (made no difference with Autorate but has been an issue with other metadata apps).

I dropped my Macbook and now the screen is severely distorted. The computer itself still funs fine and can be used, if one works around the partially blacked out screen. Since it's a 2008 Macbook, it's a bit long in the tooth, so I'm thinking of just getting an iPad for every day usage and plugging the Macbook into an external monitor for the one or two desktop applications I need it for. But which iPad to get?

Mountain Lion iCloud question: I know iCloud stores files locally on my Mac, somewhere. Generally I use two document editors — iA Writer, which syncs to iCloud, and Notational Velocity, which doesn't. Can I set Notational Velocity to save its notes in iA's iCloud folder, so that it automatically syncs to iCloud and I can use iA's mobile apps to edit my notes on the fly?

Please help me diagnose an annoying issue with the sound output in my Mac Mini. Upon every system bootup, the sound output manages to set itself 100% to the right channel. So far, I've not managed to find any search results for this issue. It's a simple fix to move the balance slider to the middle, but I shouldn't have to do this every time I turn on the bleedin' thing.
