On my Mac (OS X Mavericks), some fullscreen apps don't let me task switch away from them. AT ALL. Needless to say, this is ridiculously annoying. Is there a workaround? [more inside]
A non-geeky friend just called me asking if I had any knowledge of Final Draft - to which the answer is "minimally" - and asked for help, which I was unable to provide, in recovering or repairing a file. I am now wondering if there is something I didn't think of... [more inside]
Typing is killing me and I have to write a bunch of papers over the next couple of weeks. I have a 2012 MBP (not yet on Mavericks) and could spend ~ $100-150 on some kind of voice-to-text software. Looking for something with a minimal learning curve that will let me work fast. And, whatever else is required to quickly & painlessly navigate multiple documents. Any recommendations? [more inside]
As part of a general digital cleanup (thank you, Heartbleed), I want to perform the long overdue task of backing up my Gmail account (with nearly a decade's worth of email) to my mac. I have two questions: 1) Is gmvault the only option? Is there anything more accessible to a user who hasn't used Terminal with any regularity in eight years, and even then wasn't very proficient using the command line? 2) If gmvault is the only option, or the most accessible option, can someone explain very clearly how to run it? I am unable to successfully follow the instructions on the gmvault website--they seem to assume that I'll intuit some necessary steps, when I actually need every step laid out for me.
I have only two wishes: world peace and getting Outlook 2011 for Mac to sync with a web calendar that will also sync wirelessly with my Android phone. [more inside]
I have a Mac (Mavericks) and iPhone (iOS 7), and I use the Mac mail client for both. My email is hosted on Google for domains. Some time in the past few months, my mail has started putting perfectly legitimate mail into my Junk folder. It's not marked as junk- I've turned off junk mail filtering altogether, so I don't even have that option anymore, and by my logic nothing should wind up in my Junk folder at all at this point. How can I get my mail to behave properly? [more inside]
So, I run everything in my life through my mac computer. My television programming, my music, et cetera. I listen to a lot of online radio throughout the day. I would really like to "flip on" a program (or set of programs) with a single analog switch. [more inside]
I would like Transmission, my OS X BitTorrent client, to only download and upload torrents when I'm on my home Wi-Fi network, and to stop all activity automatically when I'm not on this network. How can I achieve this? I'm open to using different software if need be.
For a while, I've searched for a quirky way to handle delivery of my files online - basically one video file, between 30 - 250 MB, gets uploaded to YouTube for client preview, and to Hightail (formerly YouSendIt) for delivery to put on air. I'd love a simpler, or more automated way, to handle this process on my Mac. [more inside]
I unpacked a bunch of boxes, took photos of what was inside, and then packed them back up. I would like to create a simple inventory of the boxes with columns for box #, a photo of the contents, and a description of the contents. Here is sort of an idea of what I am trying to accomplish. I'm writing a book that will contain around 200 photographs and their captions. What program should I use to write it? Microsoft Word is annoying when it comes to photos (and everything else). I like Scrivener but am not sure it's the best for a photo-heavy, text-light project. I'm on a Mac.

I am obsessed with DJ Yoda, who is a pretty famous turntablist DJ. Example of his work In a nutshell, he takes either existing music or beats he creates on his own and mixes it with dialogue samples from other music, tv shows, movies, etc.....Add some scratching and all that type of stuff. I wanna learn how to do that. What do I need? [more inside]
I am on a mac, and reluctantly use Firefox right now for some of my work. Firefox on the mac has become so slow and boggy, it is painful to work on. However, I download a lot of jpegs from webpages, and in Firefox, you can have the file automatically open with one click in Photoshop (or any other software), without having to download, go to the finder, and so forth. Is that feature available in either Chrome or Safari? I have done some googling, but can't seem to find anything.
I need to back up three Macs and an external iTunes library and want to do it via a drive attached to my router. My brain doesn't understand networking. I think I have all the required parts of the puzzle, but I'm clearly not understanding something important. [more inside]

I need a laptop for travel for about 3-4 weeks a year, and up to this point I have always had an old one I can tote around, I recently bought a series of older macbooks through craigslist that did the job for a little while, but both, for various reasons are no longer working and can't be fixed without a lot of cost. I am hesitant to try for another craiglist computer, because of my recent experiences, but I also don't want to lay out the money for a new macbook because of how infrequently it will be used, it just seems, well, wasteful both monetarily and also letting a new computer collect dust. It needs to be able to run Adobe CS 5 or 6, it can either be a mac or pc, though ideally a mac. If no other options present themselves, I would most likely look at Apple refurbished. But are there any other sources that I am overlooking?
Is there an equivalent of Instapaper or Pocket, but more or less optimized for saving and decluttering (long) email threads? (Gmail, specifically?) [more inside]
I'm trying to help a relative who's in a full panic about computer security, brought on both by the alarmist mainstream reporting about the gotofail bug and by some coincidental hardware issues with her OS X machine. My reassurance isn't going to cut it this time -- is there somewhere online where she can read, in lay terms, that although the bug was severe in theory / in its implications, there's very little evidence of real-world exploits? 1. Is there a way to lock the bookmark bar in Safari? I keep accidentally deleting bookmarks by dragging them into the screen and then they disappear into a puff of air. It's annoying because sometimes I don't notice I have done it and then when I go into Safari the next time I find my bookmark is gone. 2. Is there a shortcut to close all your program and shut down at the same time? I always have to Command +Q each program before I shut down which is annoying. Thanks! Any other unknown secrets or shortcuts for Mac also appreciated!

When I use a mouse with a scrollwheel on the mac, the scrolling doesn't work like I'm used to in windows. Specifically, if I scroll one click of the wheel, it scrolls an infinitesimal amount (looks like one pixel height). I've never looked specifically at what the Windows behavior is, but I think it's three lines per scroll click. Is there any way to change this to be what I'm used to?

and that worked just great...only it did something to the other partition which has caused it not to mount, to refer to itself as disk3s5. It refuses to mount and if I click "verify disk" it says the disk needs to be repaired and to click repair disk. When I do so I get "disk utility can't repair the disk". So what on Earth did disk utility do to the other partition which I did not ask it to touch? The original job was completed because the file system of the other partition was NTFS and it's now MacOS Extended. Any ideas?
Mac Word 2011 (most recent version, 14.3.9) running on most recent version of Mavericks on late 2013 15" retina MacBook Pro crashes whenever opening a document that contains comments or change tracking. A complete uninstall and reinstall of Office did not fix the problem. What gives?

I need to give some video files to an editor who needs a Mac-formatted drive. I only run Windows. Happy to (have my producer) pay a reasonable amount for the privilege. What are your favorite programs for this purpose?
I'm contemplating a new computer purchase, and one of the options I'm kicking around is a Macbook Pro Retina. Getting one of those with a big SSD is stupidly expensive. So I'm wondering what the best approach is for dealing with less storage on a laptop, and any particular tips or tricks. [more inside]

Recently, I am finding myself with a significant amount of drive time. I have many audio books I have downloaded from amazon which use the audible proprietary .aax file. They play in iTunes but I need to put them on a jump drive so that my MicroSoft sync system in my car will recognize them and allow me to listen. I could care less about the DRM, sharing or any of that business. I just want to be able to use the files outside of my Mac. They are too long to burn to a CD I have searched the web with no satisfaction. Any answers, oh wise mefi?
