Ok, I'm trying to figure out shell scripting. I wrote a simple bash script, saved it in ~/bin/, made sure /bin/ was in my PATH variable, updated the permissions to make it executable and successfully executed it from Terminal. However, when I make changes to the script in BBEdit and save the changes, they don't seem to "take". When I re-run the script in Terminal, the changes don't seem to have been made. I opened new terminal windows, quit the Terminal, etc., to no avail. What am I missing?

I use iPhoto purely to keep track of my iPhone photos and video...it's just easier. I take tons of images, and with the 6's bigger file sizes now my library has ballooned to over 1/5 of my HD. I do lots of dslr work, and I need as much HD space as possible for my actual photo work, not my phone snapshots. What are some solutions you've concocted to manage how much room this shitty app gobbles? Compression? Is there an option somewhere to archive by year? What's the best answer?
Is the new Mac Mini worth it? Or should I build a hackintosh? [more inside]

Help me come up with an external storage solution. I want to move a large amount of data off my computer, but also start performing regular backups of the computer, as well as the migrated data, if possible. [more inside]
I have a medium business-sized storeroom filled with all kinds of boxes, those with brands and those with nothing but a barcode, as well as hundreds of unboxed but mostly barcoded items which have seemingly drifted into each others' plastic bins like nosy tumbleweeds. They're organized more by what fits onto what shelf than any like-to-like sensibilities. It's exhausting just walking in there. I also have a TaoTronics TT-BS016 scanner, which is basically a glorified but faster-than-moi number typist. [more inside]
I'm looking for an app on Mac OS X (Mavericks preferred. Can't use Yosemite). The app would simply display an image with adjustable transparency such that a second app could be positioned behind this image-displaying app, and I could see the image overlaid. [more inside]
How can I simply print an envelope or two from my Mac to any printer that can handle envelopes? I'm printing directly on the envelope, but it's a standard #10 envelope--no labels, no odd sizes. I'd like USPS barcodes. I've got a copy of EasyEnvelopes and I've been trying to print from it, but nothing happens on my printer and I can't update it because they charge for it now. Printing other docs works fine. [more inside]
I think a MeFite once linked to an awesome website that sold all my favorite brands (Smashbox, NARS, MAC, Urban Decay) at a discount, and it was reputable. Does anyone know which one it is or any reputable website that you've used, sells at a discount and is reliable?
I recently switched to an iMac after a lifetime of being a PC user. It's been great, except for this one mystery: What's the best way to play single MP3 tracks that you don't much care about, without them mucking up your pristine iTunes database? [more inside]

I'm suddenly in the market for a new MacBook Pro. I'm trying to decide between the Retina and non-Retina options. I remember hearing a while back is that the Retina display would lag or stutter sometimes, especially when switching between Spaces. Is that still true? I use the heck out of spaces and usually have an external monitor as well. If you have a recent rMBP, any testimonials would be much appreciated. Thanks!
I finally broke down and got a Macbook Air today. In trying to use Mac Migration Assistant to move files from my PC to the Mac, I went with best practices and connected them with an Ethernet cable. They can't seem to see each other. They see each other fine on my wifi (estimated wifi transfer time: 89 hrs), and both the Ethernet cable and the Mac Ethernet converter are working. Hope me, hive mind!
Can someone walk me through how to make a mail merge from excel data with a word letter so that each individual letter will be a separate PDF? If it's easier via an Apple/Mac program, let me know. I have access to both a windows computer and a mac.

I'm looking at buying a low-end Macbook for web browsing and MS Office (primarily Powerpoint). Basically, it's coming down to a 2009 or 2010 Macbook, as I'd prefer to run Yosemite, but I want to keep my budget below $500. I have used a friend's 2009 Macbook fairly regularly and I'm happy with its general performance, but I have a few specific questions. [more inside]

I'm helping my dad with his transition to Mac from PC, and there's one big piece of the puzzle missing. He's planning on using Outlook on the Mac (since he's used it for years on a PC), but would love a filing system like Simplyfile. While there seem to be a lot of filing systems for Apple Mail, I can't seem to find a good one for the latest version of Outlook for Mac. Any advice, hive mind? [more inside]

I have a 2006 Mac Pro 1.1 (specs below the fold) which I understand can't be upgraded to current OS versions without a CPU replacement. I recently bought a preowned Mac Pro that is wiped clean except for the OS. I need some guidance on how to configure it to optimize its awesomeness for video editing. The OS is installed on a 128GB SSD. It has three other drives (2x640GB, 1x500GB). How should I use the other drives? Where should the applications live? Backup space? Scratch disk? In case it's relevant, here are some other specs: 22GB RAM, 2x2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon. Thanks!
I've been running Geektool on my iMac for years and suddenly one of my geeklets has stopped working for no apparent reason. It runs a command using curl that grabs text from a website and formats it. Oddly enough it works fine from a Terminal window. [more inside]
I often have a group of files open that I'm working on as part of a project: maybe a Word doc, an Excel spreadsheet and a couple of others. Does anyone know an app that will let me "save" those as a group, and then open them all again with the same window positions? I sometimes use window managers but haven't come across something that will open the files as well.
I have been using the public betas of Mac OSX Yosemite for a while now, and I recently had to wipe my hard drive and start over. I have an Epson inkjet printer and a new MacBook Pro. In Windows, I can print manual duplex by simply checking a box (it prints even pages, then I flip the paper manually, then it prints the odd pages). But the driver doesn't support this in Mac OS X. HOWEVER, the reason why the simple solution (do it all manually! First print even, flip, print odd) won't work is that I want TWO pages per side AND duplex printing, i.e. four pages being printed on each piece of paper. How can I achieve this? I was thinking I could do a PDF print of two pages per side and then do the manual duplex, but whenever I've tried the output file is huge and the quality very poor. Also, this is a significant amount of extra work so I'd prefer a more straightforward solution. [more inside]
