I am trying to back up my Gmail account to my home computer, a MacBook Pro. I am able to sync the account and have downloaded most of my messages/attachments, but the native Mac mail program only downloads messages as far back as 2006. (My Gmail account goes back to 2004.) Disk space is not a problem. I have also made sure the setting for limiting the number of messages to download is not checked. Any other ideas? Thanks!
Sometime yesterday, something changed with my hover-over text in Chrome, where while it used to bring up the attributes wherever my curser was, now if displays them instead at the top of my screen. I don't know WHY I hate this, I just know that I want to change it back and can't discern how. Macbook Air running Yosemite. Thanks!
I've been happily using Slingshot on my Mac for screenshots for years but it's been discontinued and is no longer being updated. What should I replace it with? [more inside]

I am mostly a Windows guy, but I have a MacBook at home that's ended up getting more use than expected. We started using GarageBand and have a ton of photos and some videos as well. Now the smallish SSD is full. I plan to buy an external HD and move some stuff but am not that familiar with Mac file structures, so I don't know what's safe to move. [more inside]
When I try to browse photos or videos from iPhoto or Aperture in iMovie I'm unable to do so. The libraries are greyed out. I've Googled and tried stuff to no avail. Help! [more inside]
I have a decent number of 10+ year old CD-Rs and DVD-Rs, and a few of them have started to go south. I'd like to pull off as much of the data as possible, even if it means an audio glitch or a corrupted bit of an image here and there. (Where at the moment, the OS X Finder just gives up and I don't get any part of the damaged file at all.) Is there an app or technique you would suggest for this purpose? [more inside]
My MacBook Pro was stolen last night. The disk was encrypted with FileVault and the login passwords were non trivial (good enough for petty thieves though probably not hackers skilled in the art). I told iCloud to lock it down and erase it on first contact. Will the thief and his friends be able to do anything with this machine, or is it just a paperweight at this point? [more inside]
I have a late-2008 MacBook running Yosemite with 2GB of RAM. For years I have had two external hard drives, one for my Surface Pro 2, and one for this Mac, or so I thought. But after plugging my Mac hard drive into my PC to look at the file list, I found that I could no longer mount the hard drive on my Mac (?!). All the files are still there, accessible and editable on my PC. This seems like witchcraft, but I'm sure there is a reasonable explanation. [more inside]
I have a mid-2010 Mac Mini that we use as our family's common desktop computer. The monitor is dying. Help me choose a replacement? [more inside]
Having finally run out of patience with having to install a massive security fix every time I want to use Word for Mac 2011, I'm querying the Hive Mind for recommendations for an OSX word processor that can also open/save .doc or .docx files. [more inside]
I remember playing with this game with friends back in the late 90s on a PowerPC Mac. It had cartoony anthropomorphic animal characters (police-cat, stoner-dog, a business-suit hedgehog etc.) and a variety of backgrounds like a movie theater, diner, street-corner etc. [more inside]
I'd like to completely wipe my late 2010-era Macbook Air and do a fresh reinstall of OS X and all the applications I use. What steps should I take to make sure I retain everything I want? [more inside]

I have a Mac Pro, and I currently have Volume X on a USB 3 drive which I use as a workspace. I'd like to move it to my Thunderbolt drive so I can use the USB 3 drive elsewhere. Can I do this without breaking path references on my SSD? What's the best way?
So, I am finally giving up my last personal connection to Microsoft, my home PC running Windows 7 Home Premium, and switching to a really gorgeous iMac. Everything else in my life -- phone, tablet, watch, and laptop -- are already Apple. What preparations should I engage in while waiting for the new iMac to be delivered? And what do you recommend for smoothly getting my data (photos, documents, Quicken file, etc.) from my PC to my new Mac? And is there anything else you would advise I do as I make the transition? Many thanks.
I have my entire iTunes library on an external hard drive. I have a computer that has no problem accessing the iTunes library on the external hard drive, but for any other purpose refuses to acknowledge the existence of said drive, because it's a powerpc external hard drive. I would like to figure out how to transfer my iTunes library to a brand new external hard drive to use with my new mac. [more inside]
I am hoping to be able to install Windows 8 on my Mac so that I can do a few work demos; I will be using Windows with only MS Office installed, and using it perhaps once a week at most. [more inside]
I can't remember much about it but I'm trying to remember the name of a Classic Mac-era program that let you create animations in the black-and-white style of Dark Castle. It came with a demo that scrolled and had funny stuff happening in it.
I run a one-person S Corporation in California, and am using Quickbooks 2012 on a Mac. My current bookkeeper (as well as a previous one) suggested I not use Online Banking to automatically import transactions from my bank and credit cards, saying there's a lot of potential for it to mess things up. My main question: should I avoid Quickbooks for Mac's online banking? What if I upgrade to the 2015 Mac version - does it handle such things better? [more inside]
Fairly gnarly Mac debugging / troubleshooting question, concerning an app that crashes on launch consistently, but only when run by a single particular user. So far, it's stumped everyone. Lots of gory technical details inside. [more inside]
That's basically the question. I'm not a gamer AT ALL but decades ago I enjoyed two games, Ceremony of Innocence and Myst and haven't played since. I'm now in the possession of a new three day old 13 " MacBook Pro and thought I'd take advantage of the retina graphic aspect of it with a visually stunning game. Games with riddles and puzzles and stories like the above, the first one in particular are the only ones I've enjoyed. Do you know of any others?
My 2011 MacBook Pro seems to be showing its age. I'm on the edge, performance is a little sluggish, but I don't need an upgrade. I am considering switching to a 2014 Mac Mini or holding off another mac development cycle or two. Will the Mac Mini feel like an upgrade? More detailed specs below. [more inside]

I recently upgraded my MacBook Air to Yosemite. Everything seems to be fine, except for the fact that my iPhones text messages now happen on my computer (I think this is the continuity feature?). Anyway, I want this to stop. Of course, I Googled it before I posted, here, but the fixes that I found, don't appear to be relevant (they were from 2014 and probably from Mavericks). For example, one fix suggested opening the Messages app on your Mac (which I did) and open the Preferences menu, which I don't see. Can anyone help me stop this?? Thanks!

I’m trying to write a short shell script for Mac OS X that will disable CoreStorage. To do this I need to capture the first Logical Volume UUID (lvUUID) from the output of "diskutil cs list" and use it in an ensuing command. I am having trouble though and it seems to be a simple issue with grep. Obviously still pretty new to the command line. [more inside]
I have a very basic (I think) requirement infrequently where I need to slightly modify a picture (usually a line drawing or a jpg of an event layout or similar) so that I can extract the track map from it. I keep bouncing between software that doesn't do enough to overwhelmingly complicated and too involved to do quickly. Please translate what is available in my own perspective please. I am open to the possibility that I am outside the realms of simple software, but am ever hopeful. [more inside]

Ok, I'm trying to figure out shell scripting. I wrote a simple bash script, saved it in ~/bin/, made sure /bin/ was in my PATH variable, updated the permissions to make it executable and successfully executed it from Terminal. However, when I make changes to the script in BBEdit and save the changes, they don't seem to "take". When I re-run the script in Terminal, the changes don't seem to have been made. I opened new terminal windows, quit the Terminal, etc., to no avail. What am I missing?
I have a medium business-sized storeroom filled with all kinds of boxes, those with brands and those with nothing but a barcode, as well as hundreds of unboxed but mostly barcoded items which have seemingly drifted into each others' plastic bins like nosy tumbleweeds. They're organized more by what fits onto what shelf than any like-to-like sensibilities. It's exhausting just walking in there. I also have a TaoTronics TT-BS016 scanner, which is basically a glorified but faster-than-moi number typist. [more inside]
I'm looking for an app on Mac OS X (Mavericks preferred. Can't use Yosemite). The app would simply display an image with adjustable transparency such that a second app could be positioned behind this image-displaying app, and I could see the image overlaid. [more inside]
I think a MeFite once linked to an awesome website that sold all my favorite brands (Smashbox, NARS, MAC, Urban Decay) at a discount, and it was reputable. Does anyone know which one it is or any reputable website that you've used, sells at a discount and is reliable?
I recently switched to an iMac after a lifetime of being a PC user. It's been great, except for this one mystery: What's the best way to play single MP3 tracks that you don't much care about, without them mucking up your pristine iTunes database? [more inside]

I finally broke down and got a Macbook Air today. In trying to use Mac Migration Assistant to move files from my PC to the Mac, I went with best practices and connected them with an Ethernet cable. They can't seem to see each other. They see each other fine on my wifi (estimated wifi transfer time: 89 hrs), and both the Ethernet cable and the Mac Ethernet converter are working. Hope me, hive mind!
