My 2011 MacBook Pro seems to be showing its age. I'm on the edge, performance is a little sluggish, but I don't need an upgrade. I am considering switching to a 2014 Mac Mini or holding off another mac development cycle or two. Will the Mac Mini feel like an upgrade? More detailed specs below. [more inside]
Upon adding up the separate folders within my drive, I can see a large discrepancy between the two amounts. I've utilzied many of the options within disk utilty for OSX. Please help. [more inside]
I’m trying to write a short shell script for Mac OS X that will disable CoreStorage. To do this I need to capture the first Logical Volume UUID (lvUUID) from the output of "diskutil cs list" and use it in an ensuing command. I am having trouble though and it seems to be a simple issue with grep. Obviously still pretty new to the command line. [more inside]
I have a very basic (I think) requirement infrequently where I need to slightly modify a picture (usually a line drawing or a jpg of an event layout or similar) so that I can extract the track map from it. I keep bouncing between software that doesn't do enough to overwhelmingly complicated and too involved to do quickly. Please translate what is available in my own perspective please. I am open to the possibility that I am outside the realms of simple software, but am ever hopeful. [more inside]
I'm using an up-to-date 2-year-old MacBook Air and I just can't manage to get Vimeo videos to load. Can someone help me fix this by speaking to me as if I am your elderly aunt's even older senile neighbor? [more inside]
How do I convert from Word 94 to Word 2010 when I can't get the original files to open? How do I convert Powerpoint files to Keynote? [more inside]
Ok, I'm trying to figure out shell scripting. I wrote a simple bash script, saved it in ~/bin/, made sure /bin/ was in my PATH variable, updated the permissions to make it executable and successfully executed it from Terminal. However, when I make changes to the script in BBEdit and save the changes, they don't seem to "take". When I re-run the script in Terminal, the changes don't seem to have been made. I opened new terminal windows, quit the Terminal, etc., to no avail. What am I missing?
I have a medium business-sized storeroom filled with all kinds of boxes, those with brands and those with nothing but a barcode, as well as hundreds of unboxed but mostly barcoded items which have seemingly drifted into each others' plastic bins like nosy tumbleweeds. They're organized more by what fits onto what shelf than any like-to-like sensibilities. It's exhausting just walking in there. I also have a TaoTronics TT-BS016 scanner, which is basically a glorified but faster-than-moi number typist. [more inside]
I'm looking for an app on Mac OS X (Mavericks preferred. Can't use Yosemite). The app would simply display an image with adjustable transparency such that a second app could be positioned behind this image-displaying app, and I could see the image overlaid. [more inside]
I think a MeFite once linked to an awesome website that sold all my favorite brands (Smashbox, NARS, MAC, Urban Decay) at a discount, and it was reputable. Does anyone know which one it is or any reputable website that you've used, sells at a discount and is reliable?
I recently switched to an iMac after a lifetime of being a PC user. It's been great, except for this one mystery: What's the best way to play single MP3 tracks that you don't much care about, without them mucking up your pristine iTunes database? [more inside]
I have a bunch of text messages that I need to use to substantiate certain statements. I would like to export many messages from my phone, for two reasons... [more inside]
I finally broke down and got a Macbook Air today. In trying to use Mac Migration Assistant to move files from my PC to the Mac, I went with best practices and connected them with an Ethernet cable. They can't seem to see each other. They see each other fine on my wifi (estimated wifi transfer time: 89 hrs), and both the Ethernet cable and the Mac Ethernet converter are working. Hope me, hive mind!
Can I play SimCity really without any goals at all, or is there another game that is even more free-form than SimCity? [more inside]

I run iTunes Match on four devices: a 2010 iMac, a 2012 iMac, a 2012 Macbook, and an iPhone 5c. One of my favorite playlists has gone missing on the phone, the Macbook, and the 2012 iMac, but not from the 2010 iMac. What's gone wrong and how can I fix it? [more inside]
I have the latest version of Outlook for Mac (the one that came out last week). Everyone in my small office uses Outlook for Windows with a Workgroup Share Add-In to share contacts and calendars. I cannot figure out how to get this to work on my Mac. Please explain this to me like I am 8. [more inside]
I have an iPad mini (16GB, wi-fi only, running iOS 8.x) that I use mostly for reading the web--never for listening to podcasts--and want to get rid of the podcast files that are unwanted on the device and just taking up valuable space. [more inside]
OS X on my MacBook Pro is doing what it's supposed to do: Trying to connect with my Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. I'd like it to not do that when my MacBook isn't connected to my Thunderbolt display. Is there any way to automate this? [more inside]
Is there a way to enable 360 degree two finger scrolling in Adobe products for a Windows 8.1 machine? Essentially, I want it to work like it does on a Mac. [more inside]
I've been running Geektool on my iMac for years and suddenly one of my geeklets has stopped working for no apparent reason. It runs a command using curl that grabs text from a website and formats it. Oddly enough it works fine from a Terminal window. [more inside]
I have been using the public betas of Mac OSX Yosemite for a while now, and I recently had to wipe my hard drive and start over. When I went to download the installer again from the App Store today, Yosemite is no longer listed under my "Purchases" as it had been before. Am I the only one this is happening to? [more inside]
I have a Google Calendar synced with my Mac (Yosemite) where I had a full year's events added while living in Toronto. I moved 3 months ago to the West Coast and changed all settings to Pacific Time, but when I check on the individual upcoming events from this calendar, I find either the event itself is off by 3 hours (urgh) or the TZ itself is still listed as Eastern (less problematic, but annoying). Purchasing a new iMac, looking for accessories recommendations. [more inside]
I've migrated all my songs to iTunes Match, because I don't have space on my hard drive. But some of my ripped tracks have weird names, dating back from when I manually ripped the CDs. Is there a way of (semi?)automatically correcting these without having to download my whole library, or go through manually? [more inside]
I have a Macbook; my friend has an old Android phone. I plugged his phone into my computer to get some videos and photos. He unplugged it before I could properly eject it, and his phone now doesn't recognize the card. It says it's damaged and asks him to reformat. Is there any way for me to rescue the files on this card? [more inside]
Just wondering if I should be doing more to protect my Apple Products for viruses and malware, etc. Should I be more proactive? [more inside]
I just updated my iMac to 10.9.3 Mavericks. I just discovered that the Midisport 4x4 USB MIDI interface that was using with another Mac doesn't work. It would appear that M-Audio doesn't support 10.9. I tried installing their latest driver for the heck of it but it still doesn't appear to work. Should I just get a new interface or do I have options with this one?
The OS X GUI—but only the GUI—has stopped accepting my password. Any password. [more inside]
Apple iMac A1225 desktop computers from 2008 came with the notoriously unreliable Nvidia 8800GS graphics card that burns out and turns the iMacs into bricks. Getting a new Nvidia 8800GS graphics card costs about $650 for the part. Getting a used one on costs about $300. Is there a cheap alternative -- something that costs, say, $50? As I understand it, the only alternative is the ATI 4850, which go for about $300 used. Yet I find it hard to believe that there are no other graphics card options.
I'm looking for software to read Blu-ray discs on a Mac. [more inside]

Specifically, it's a mplayer virus. It has infected Google Chrome and Firefox, and is showing infuriating pop-up ads and frequently redirecting the browser to ad-like pages. Who knows what else it's doing/stealing/collecting. This may be what I deserve for trying to download some TV, but I need to get rid of it. Running Mac OSX 10.8.5. [more inside]

I would like Transmission, my OS X BitTorrent client, to only download and upload torrents when I'm on my home Wi-Fi network, and to stop all activity automatically when I'm not on this network. How can I achieve this? I'm open to using different software if need be.
I need to back up three Macs and an external iTunes library and want to do it via a drive attached to my router. My brain doesn't understand networking. I think I have all the required parts of the puzzle, but I'm clearly not understanding something important. [more inside]
Chrome in Mac OS X 10.9.2 is rendering some pages very strangely. Is there anything I can do to fix it? [more inside]
I'm a new Xcode user (and a just learning C++). I'm trying to work with "if" and "else" statements. My program seems to run just fine for the "if else" and "else" statements, but my "if" statement at the beginning returns the result "(lldb)". More inside. [more inside]
I want to draw comic storyboards. In the old days I seem to remember Appleworks drawing documents allowed you to add boxes and/or fields that allowed text or drawing. I'm looking for the new equivalent. [more inside]
Mac Word 2011 (most recent version, 14.3.9) running on most recent version of Mavericks on late 2013 15" retina MacBook Pro crashes whenever opening a document that contains comments or change tracking. A complete uninstall and reinstall of Office did not fix the problem. What gives?

I have a ton of old, ad hoc backups from a variety of old computers going back years. I've been very good about keeping the data around and alive, safe from bitrot, but not at organizing it or keeping it useful. How do I sort through this heap of disorganized data and make it useful? [more inside]
I recently started reading all my email on my smartphone. I still want to download every message in Thunderbird on my Mac (to archive it), but I don't want to manually mark everything as read after downloading it. Is there a way to either disable the "unread" flag, or auto-mark all new messages as read when they are received? [more inside]
I have a no-contract plan at Virgin Mobile USA, which I like because it is so cheap ($35/month for unlimited data and enough calling). The downside of cheap and no-contract is expensive phones. However, I just lost my Android phone and would like to switch back to iPhone. My options at Virgin are iPhone 4, for $200, iPhone 4s, for $314, or iPhone 5, for more than I want to pay really. How to decide? [more inside]
Is it worth paying for the upgrades on a new Macbook Pro? [more inside]
I'm a late adaptor. After much happy gaming in Windows XP (via Boot Camp on my Mac), I am finally getting around to Vista-only games like Assassin's Creed III. So it's time to take the plunge and buy a copy of Vista on eBay. But which version? 64-bit or 32-bit? Service pack 1, 2, or 3? Starter, basic, or ultimate? Home or business? As somebody who isn't well-versed in Windows to begin with, I'm finding the choice a little overwhelming. I will be using Windows exclusively for gaming and don't care about any other features. Also, note that Windows Vista is the latest Windows my 2006 Mac Pro will support, so unfortunately "Skip straight to Windows 7 or 8" isn't an option. [more inside]
