Aaaaaaaahh!!! Friend tried to fix my macbook and erased my hard drive in the process. Now I get a white "stop" symbol when I try logging in, which apparently means that my Mac can't find a valid System Folder to start up from. I'm beyond warranty--how do I get my macbook working again? [more inside]
My dad just called me in a panic. His iMac (running El Capital or Yosemite) gave him a scammy looking error message. Need some help figuring out what's going on and how to fix it. [more inside]
I have a 27" iMac I bought at the beginning of 2013. It's a top of the line, 3tb hybrid drive, 16gb RAM. It has problems though that can't seem to be fixed. [more inside]
My macbook is from 2009. I haven't followed Apple news/updates for many years now so I am at a loss on how to prioritize the options available. [more inside]
I'm leaving a job that provided me with a new-ish MacBook Air, and I need to replace it. I'm torn: Macbook, Air, Pro, retina, non-retina, desktop Mac, etc. My entire digital life - home and work -is with Apple, so I am not interested in PCs. Help me overthink a plate of pretty, functional, slightly-overpriced beans. [more inside]
I have a mid-2010 Mac Mini that we use as our family's common desktop computer. The monitor is dying. Help me choose a replacement? [more inside]
This weekend I played one of the Jackbox family of games. I think my family would love them and I'd like to give/have it available to play while we're all home for Christmas. Looks like I might have some technical issues--I need some guidance, please! [more inside]
My Mac is (and has been) prompting me to update software. Every time we get past the "Agree" or "disagree" prompt, the window tells me it can't be installed on "Macintosh HD." There is 300-some GB of space. Any ideas what's going on? [more inside]
My spouse and I own an 27-inch iMac from 2011. Recently, the screen seemed to go briefly haywire and then black. Now, when the computer is turned on, it seems to boot fine, but nothing can be seen on the screen (the flashlight trick did not help). Is there a way to make the computer mirror itself to another monitor at startup so that we can access its contents? [more inside]
My mom is using my 2006 Core Duo iMac and all is well except that, of course, it's a 32-bit CPU that can't run new versions of MacOS and is no longer receiving security updates. Chrome frequently blocks Flash and it's generally annoying her. It's time for a new machine (probably). [more inside]
Upon adding up the separate folders within my drive, I can see a large discrepancy between the two amounts. I've utilzied many of the options within disk utilty for OSX. Please help. [more inside]
I have a 2-year-old MacBook Pro with a 500 GB SSD running Yosemite. It was fine until 3 days ago, when the computer slowed to a crawl. I rebooted several times; each time, it got slow again. I eventually realized that it slowed down when trying to back up to the external hard drive. I ran Disk Utility, which found no errors on the SSD or the external hard drive. [more inside]
I'm looking at buying a low-end Macbook for web browsing and MS Office (primarily Powerpoint). Basically, it's coming down to a 2009 or 2010 Macbook, as I'd prefer to run Yosemite, but I want to keep my budget below $500. I have used a friend's 2009 Macbook fairly regularly and I'm happy with its general performance, but I have a few specific questions. [more inside]

Mac OS 10.8.5- What's the best app for adding the Windows Snap feature? Googling led me to Better Snap Tool and Hyperdock- if either of these (or others) have proved to be useful to you, please let me know! Thanks to all in advance.
My Mac Air manifested damage within 6 weeks of purchase, but Apple refuses to take any responsibility (damage isn’t covered under warranty), insisting I caused it. My credit card doesn’t offer insurance. The only option they’ve given me is to pay $500+ to have it fixed. If you were me, what would you do? [more inside]
I'm fed up with Windows and want my next computer to be a Mac—but the product landscape has changed a lot since the last time I seriously considered it. Is an iMac really a competitive machine for someone doing heavy graphics and video work? [more inside]
Apple iMac A1225 desktop computers from 2008 came with the notoriously unreliable Nvidia 8800GS graphics card that burns out and turns the iMacs into bricks. Getting a new Nvidia 8800GS graphics card costs about $650 for the part. Getting a used one on costs about $300. Is there a cheap alternative -- something that costs, say, $50? As I understand it, the only alternative is the ATI 4850, which go for about $300 used. Yet I find it hard to believe that there are no other graphics card options.
We have a several Macs at home. We want to securely connect to any of them from outside of home, via other Macs or iPhone or iPad and pull off files or use the home computer via the remote Mac/iDevice if needed. Talk to us like we're not tech savy and tell us how to do this. All the macs are running 10.9.2.

I need a laptop for travel for about 3-4 weeks a year, and up to this point I have always had an old one I can tote around, I recently bought a series of older macbooks through craigslist that did the job for a little while, but both, for various reasons are no longer working and can't be fixed without a lot of cost. I am hesitant to try for another craiglist computer, because of my recent experiences, but I also don't want to lay out the money for a new macbook because of how infrequently it will be used, it just seems, well, wasteful both monetarily and also letting a new computer collect dust. It needs to be able to run Adobe CS 5 or 6, it can either be a mac or pc, though ideally a mac. If no other options present themselves, I would most likely look at Apple refurbished. But are there any other sources that I am overlooking?
I just got a Macbook Pro and would like to be able to draw simple diagrams with shapes and text fields. Are there any Mac programs or apps equivalent to PC's Paint? My search online has brought up Paintbrush which appears to be a very old program. The new ones in the apps store are either really expensive or poorly reviewed if they're free. Thanks!
I just realised that I am looking to get a 27" computer and a 32" TV. Is there a sensible way to combine both? Has anyone tried to use a HD TV monitor as a computer screen or a 27" iMac as a TV? Isn't there a way we can not buy two screens? Please, hivemind, let me know the practical issues that are worth considering. Thanks
I have my Macbook hooked up to a monitor, and within a few minutes of connecting the two, the monitor starts flickering more and more. Help! [more inside]
I have a monitor attached to my iMac, which is running 10.8.4. I use the dock to switch between open windows and programs. Until this morning this was never a problem -- I could leave a pdf open on one screen to refer to, and open Mail on the other screen. This meant I could look at what I was writing about. What I want to do is get a Macbook Air, partition one of my externals for Windows and at least 1 Linux distro so that I can play with all three systems. However, my only concern is that I'm not forseeing some possible issues with getting a mostly basic level 13 in Air. Before you ask, I don't want a Pro since my current laptop is a beast, portability really is a concern for me for several months out of the year, and I want to experience the opposite end of the weight and ready-to-go spectrum. Trying to decide what to get, here. I've got an interal 750gb 5400 rm drive in the MBP that very occasionally throws up the dreaded "drive too slow" dialog in Logic at only 6 or 8 tracks of 24 bit 44.1 kHz. [more inside]

I have a MacBook running OS X 10.6.8 and a Brother HL-2270DW printer. This morning I had to reset my entire system using Time Machine; everything else is up and running, but the printer doesn't work. I've tried reinstalling it with the printer setup disc, but the laptop won't detect our wireless connection when I get to that step (it suggests disabling my personal firewall, but I don't have one set up.), and the laptop won't let me add any printers in System Preferences. Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated, because I've spent all afternoon trying to figure this out.
I'm trying to partition the hard drive on my old mac (model 4,1 running OS X 10.5.8) so I can dual boot Ubuntu. The problem is that when I go to Disk Utility and and select to partition the drive I get an error saying that the partition failed because there's no space left on the device, even though I have lots of space. This happens no matter how small I make the partition. [more inside]
I'd like to sync a shared event/appointment calendar with a work colleague, which we both can edit (not just view) on our iMac computers, preferably without having to go to an external website to make edits, or paying for an outside service. Details within. [more inside]
Asking for a friend: There is an online grading platform that apparently only runs on Java 6, but he has a mid-year 2012 MacBook Pro unibody (13") and it came with Java 7 installed. He needs to be able to enter grades at home, which means he needs Java 6. Both of us are good with technology (and searched Google for information), but the links we found often referred to computers where Java 6 was installed, and then was replaced with Java 7. Help? I have an older MacBook I use when travelling (four or five times a year), and then the odd occasion when I am away from my office desktop. The battery on the MacBook died a few months ago, and I am guessing partially because I haven't been using it frequently enough. I am hesitant to replace the battery, figuring the same thing will happen again, is that right? Is there a downside to not having a working battery on the computer itself? And lastly, is there a problem with leaving the dead battery in the computer?

Need advice on how to update an older MacBook Pro with a new hard drive. I have a late-2008 MacBook Pro: 2.53 GHz, 320GB hard drive, 8GM RAM (4GB in two slots). My drive is getting full and I don't have the cash at the moment for a brand new laptop. Should I replace the optical drive with a SSD? Or just upgrade the regular hard drive with a new one with 750GB or 1TB? [more inside]
I'm trying to remember a computer game I had years back, but I can't for the life of me find it. It was a falling bricks game (like Tetris) but the pieces were one of four parts of several different faces - the hair, the eyes, the nose and mouth, and the chin and neck. The idea was to make a complete face that would then disappear from the board (again, like in Tetris). You could do mix and match faces, but you got more points for doing a whole matching face. If you let, for instance, too many mouths pile up on each other and reach the top, you lost. There were different levels, and the faces changed with each level. Does anybody else know of this? It would have been a Mac game, sometime during the 90's. I can't have just imagined this!

Renter's Remorse Filter. I moved into a new place and I cannot stand it (upstairs neighbor sounds like an elephant, asinine condo regulations, horrible parking, etc.) Is there a countdown timer utility (Mac OS 10.6) or email service that I can use to count down the weeks I have left to live here? Ideally, I would like to receive an email at the end of every week, saying I have X number of weeks left.
