Medical/travel insurance SNAFU outside my country. Am I liable?

I was in an minor accident in the U.S. last September (broke my foot). At the time, my workplace travel insurance seemed to have covered everything just fine -- I went to the clinic, gave them my paperwork, they made some calls, said I was covered and I didn't even need to provide a credit card. Just today, I got a call telling me I owe the clinic $500. Do I care? [more inside]

Pennies from heaven?

I had a routine ladyparts exam a few months ago. It qualified as "preventive care" and I didn't have to pay a copay. (Yay! Thank you, ACA!) I got a rundown of what they charged my insurance a month or two ago -- one of those THIS IS NOT A BILL things -- and promptly lost/forgot about it, since I owed nothing. Today I got a check, made out to me, from the doctor's office for a couple hundred bucks. Do I get to keep it? [more inside]

Pre-existing condition technicality

My wife just purchased health insurance for herself. Today is her first day of coverage. She has been experiencing back pain and nerve pain in her leg for the better part of a week, however. If she goes to the doctor today and they send her for an MRI (which we're certain they will) and subsequently decide to do surgery (we think she has a slipped/bulging/herniated disc) is there a chance the claims processor at the insurance company will question paying for any of these services? Diabolical Medical System From Hell

I just got health insurance for the first time in my adult life (thanks a bunch America), through my spouse's company. It seems like fairly robust insurance, and I would love to finally get treatment for my debilitating anxiety and possible ADHD. But I am so fearful of having these things on my medical record and possibly causing future insurance problems, that I am hesitant to make any appointments. Am I justified in these concerns? Are there things I can do to mitigate the repercussions? [more inside]

Mid twenties male with medical dilemma needs some collective advice.

I'm a male in my mid-twenties, active, and have been for the most part healthy. A few months ago I started getting some strange symptoms, and pain in one of my testicles. I was uninsured so I went to the doctor anonymously and paid cash. His thoughts were it was probably just a standard infection, and gave me some antibiotics and told me to come back if the pain persisted. Around that time I also went to an anonymous city clinic to see if it could be an STD and everything up until then checked out OK. There was a test *Syphilis that I hadn't called back on for results, I did so today and they said the test was negative as well, but there was "something else was going on".. Apparently, the second part of the Syphilis test showed them this. I also asked again about the STD related stuff and they said all that was fine. [more inside]

A minor fender bender. Will it ruin our lives?

About a month ago, my pregnant wife and I were in a minor fender bender on Rt. 202 in NJ. The woman before us stopped short, and we hit her going about 20 mph. This wasn't our fault. Their wa sa police car who made an erratic turn at the merge of the road that cause a few cars in front of us to swerve and or strop short at the time. The mini-van had a minor scratch and bump. Our jeep had no damage..... I don't know the full details of the law, but NJ law seems to say that the person who hits from behind is automatically at fault. Period. [more inside]
