Feeling like my first master's was a waste, I'm pursuing an MBA and considering a career change. If this sounds like something you've done, I have some questions for you below. [more inside]
I'm headed from Boston to Williamstown in mid-September for a short getaway. I'll also be 33 weeks pregnant, so anticipate needing frequent food and rest stops. Where can we stop about halfway for lunch or dinner and a good leg-stretch? Google says Athol is halfway, but I don't know restaurants in the area. We also think we should take route 2 and 2A for the most scenic drive -- is that right? Thanks!
Looking for feedback about the upsides and downsides of doing an M.A. part time [more inside]
Has anyone out there completed an online or hybrid doctoral program, and can you share your thoughts and experiences? [more inside]
I recently purchased an EMS 7500 TENS device. The maximum current output is 80–100 mA. How can I limit the maximum current to approximately 25 mA instead, even if the intensity dial were to be turned all the way up? [more inside]
We are planning a quick 2-night getaway trip to Brattleboro, leaving from North of Boston. I'd love your help choosing a route that will be scenic to drive, but not too too long, and also your recommendations for interesting, quirky, fun stops between here and there, and/or things to do while based there. We enjoy history, food, drink, farming, music, vintage/flea stuff, Americana, hiking, canoeing, etc. We've never spent time in the town before and will be staying right downtown. Thank you!
I submitted a prospectus to my thesis committee last month, but haven't started work on the thesis. Since I submitted the prospectus, I've come to have some doubts about whether or not this is the thesis topic for me. I'd like to take things in a slightly different, but still related, direction. Is is too late for me to do that without coming across as flaky, uncommitted, or reluctant to accept criticism? [more inside]
I know Waltham isn't regarded as highly as Newton, Lexington, Belmont, etc. This I know. What about the culture of the schools, especially the High School? Do they have a good.PTO? Is there much of an issue with drugs or violence? Are there any gifted or accelerated programs? [more inside]
I live in an area with a significant Portuguese population (Rhode Island - southeastern Massachusetts), and I am currently visiting Lisbon. However, I have never seen the type of roast chicken advertised as "Portuguese chicken" anywhere other than Toronto. Okay, the Portuguese restaurants in my home area will serve you chicken, but they're not especially known for it. Is it just me, or does there not even seem to be that much roast chicken in Lisbon? (Delicious cuisine overall, though - especially the seafood!) [more inside]
The M.A. isn't optional obviously if I want to continue to teach and the program is good, so that's fine. If in the future I decide to pursue graduate level studies in something related to immunology or developmental biology, will having a Master's in a mostly unrelated field give me any leg up being admitted to a decent PhD program? I'm guessing the answer is a straight "nope". The only thing I can think of is that a lab may look positively on a candidate with several years of formal teaching experience. [more inside]
I just moved to Medford, MA for a job. What are some (preferably free or inexpensive) things I can do on evenings and weekends? [more inside]
I work with (and perform IT functions for) a small direct mail house in the heart of New England. My supervisor has tasked me with keeping up on new and changed laws and regulations regarding data security in the states that we operate in (MA, ME, NH, VT) as well as federally. Is it too much to hope that there's a website that specializes in this? [more inside]
Last night as I was closing the shades I noticed cold air coming in and discovered what I think is a fairly recent gap between the wooden window sill and the vinyl windows. The gap is letting in quite a lot of air, and I am trying to figure out a) what caused it and b) if this is something we can fix (temporarily) ourselves. [more inside]
I am saving to go to Europe to do a masters degree. I am interested in International Relations, International Law, Human Rights, and European Affairs (history and institutions of the EU, European Law). I'm Australian but I also have UK dual nationality. I am starting to investigate programmes but am finding it hard to narrow down the options and find the best one for me. My question is: how do I work out which master's programmes have the best/ worst reputation?

My wife and I will be sitting down with a real estate buyer's broker over the weekend as we start our home search. Wifey and I are on vacation. We’re currently in White River Junction, Vermont and heading towards western New York. We’d like to spend a night in a town or city that has a vibrant downtown with some interesting shops, restaurants, museums or other attractions. Saratoga is a good example of the kind of place we’d like to visit, but we’ve recently been there. Any suggestions? It doesn’t have to be directly on our route but we don’t have time for a huge detour.
