What to do in Ol' Kentucky

What to do in Louisville, KY this weekend? I'm heading up to Louisville on Thursday and staying through the weekend. Is there anything awesome of note I should investigate? I know about the Downs, and there's the Garvin Gates Blues Festival going on as well. Are there any interesting nightclubs or evening spots worth looking into for the counterculturally-minded? Art exhibits going on? Awesome places to get awesome food I can't eat anywhere else? I'll have days to fill, give me the lowdown!

Subsisting in the 502

Is it possible to live in Louisville, KY on a salary in the mid-30's? Where? I'm thinking of accepting a job offer that would pay in the mid 30's, near the University of Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky. Where in the city, if anywhere, could a single fellow rent a place and live on that modest a salary? Proximity or easy transport to the UL area would be a plus. Bonus if near parks, bookstores, mass transit, music venues, etc.

Danger! Water contains high levels of hydrogen.

WTF is up with this sign? Background: I live in Louisville, Kentucky. Today I was downtown at the big park on the riverfront shooting reference for a project, and I saw this sign beside of a fountain. Now, since there are two atoms of Hydrogen in each molecule of water already, what's up with this? Is the city parks department pranking us? Is there a legitimate situation in which flowing water at an outside fountain would somehow be infused with extra hydrogen? Discuss.

refugees in louisville?

hi, friends. hope everyone in the states had a great holiday! i am interested in learning about louisville, kentucky as a possible destination for a young, refugee couple from liberia that have been living in san diego for two years. i have some friends - recent immigrants from liberia in the past 2 years - who are currently living in san diego and looking to move. they are really interested in louisville, kentucky (a friend lives there), but before they quit their jobs (he's an airport security guard, she's a CNA) and pack up their kid (they have a one-year-old), they want to make sure there they will find affordable housing, good jobs that pay enough to improve their quality of life, and opportunities for further education and advancement (both have learned to read and write english in the past two years; the wife has ambitions of going to nursing school).

they've asked me to help them do a bit of research, but i'm struggling with how to search for answers for them. for my own part, i am a bit worried about the number of immigrants from west africa that may or may not be there (will they find a community?) and if they will be able to afford to live in a safe neighborhood or whether they will end up in another slum.

most info that i can find is based around opportunities for white color workers or entrepreneurs. what can a lower-income, immigrant couple expect when they reach louisville? where might one find realistic information about this?

Feed my seaweed need

While in Dublin, Slothrop and I fell in love with this yummy Thai snack: Tao Kae Noi Crispy Seaweed. Since moving back to the States, we were able to find it in Ann Arbor, and stocked up, but now our supplies have run out. Help! There are no Asian grocery stores where we live (that's right, none). Does anyone know of a store in Lexington or Louisville (Kentucky) that sells it? Even better, is there an online source? I've looked, but apparently not hard enough. Thanks!

Things to do in Louisville when you're (not) dead.

Fun things to do in Louisville, Kentucky? Seeking suggestions for especially cool museums, galleries, theatre, cinema, people-watching, eating, walking. Things I'm not interested in, unless they're truly exceptional in some way: Bars, nightclubs, shopping.

Bonus points for places within walking distance of downtown. (My tolerance for walking is much higher than most people, so a coupla-three mile radius is just fine.)

I consulted this thread but I'm interested in Louisville specifically.

Thanks in advance!

effing eff eff jets effing up my quiet weekend

It's that time again in Louisville, KY, time for a quaint tradition involving jets and fireworks invading my neighborhood. Instead of suffering through it, I've made the decision to escape with my sweetheart and pooch in tow. Now, where to go? We'd like to find a spot within a 4 hour drive and accommodations that will welcome our small dog. We're also young, not fussy, and somewhat ill at the idea of staying at a smarmy country inn.

Any ideas?

What do I need to know when moving from Florida to Kentucky?

My wife and I are moving from Florida to Louisville, KY. What do I need to do or know to make the transition from warm to cold weather go as smoothly as possible? We expect to arrive around the 3rd of January, in the middle of winter, so we'll start with the worst of the weather, probably. I'm interested in web sites with tips and stuff, but even more interested in personal experience and informed wisdom from people who have been there, done that.
Also, I'm really excited about snow; but tell the truth: will I actually be miserable?

It looks like my bf and I may be moving to Louisville sometime this summer. Does anyone familiar with the area have any recommendations of cool areas of town to check out when we go looking for apartments in the next few months?
