I'm kicking my band back into existence after 15 years. Where does one find professional and committed fellow players in L.A. nowadays? [more inside]
As with many transplants to LA, I am in need of a new-to-me small/tiny car, as well as a mechanic somewhere between Santa Monica and Koreatown. Any small car advice or other welcome; ca(r)eats inside. [more inside]
I am looking for SoCal music, the newer the better. It doesn't have to be from there necessarily but it has to evoke it. No Eagles. [more inside]
As much as I like to support my local government, I prefer to do it through taxation or other more-or-less straightforward revenue-collection practices. Parking enforcement, to me, is a completely irrational form of revenue generation. So, on the basis of pure principle (and $73), I ask: if the city issues parking citations for vehicles parked on street cleaning routes, (presumably) because such parked vehicles cause the city injury (or whatever, you know, tangible bad thing) by impeding street cleaning, what is the method most likely to succeed of challenging a ticket issued after street cleaning has concluded, on the basis that the city suffered no injury? My girlfriend and I are going to LA for Thanksgiving week and since we're not going down to join in any particular gathering, I wanted to query the hivemind for good things to do on Thanksgiving day. Are there any cool restaurants or events we should be booking now? [more inside]
We're going to Disneyland tomorrow. We haven't done any advance planning. I don't have a lot of time today to devote to research, either, so I thought I'd ask if anyone can brain-dump a quick-and-dirty way to shave some time off the inevitable waiting. More detail and explicit instructions are better. [more inside]
Hello LA Mefites! I'm headed back to LA for Halloween weekend and am looking for some neighborhood-specific knowledge as we are staying in Silver Lake and want to keep driving to a (relative) minimum. Cheap eats and artistic and offbeat offerings are especially welcome. We are also free on Saturday night (November 1) if you know of any good goings-on. [more inside]
I have tickets to a taping of Conan tonight. What should I expect? How early should I arrive to not be shut out? How long does a taping last? How funny is Jimmy Pardo? [more inside]
Help me find a good LA spot for a birthday shindig! [more inside]
I'm a guy in Los Angeles. I need some sexy, funky, S&M/leather-friendly, ankle-height black boots for rocking out on go-go platforms, cruising around at Burning Man, and generally pairing up with scandalous outfits at club nights. My budget could be up to $350 for the right pair. In-store only, because I'd really like to try them on. Where shall I go?
Planning ahead for Thanksgiving dinner in a new city. On Long Island my parents used to go to a local turkey farm where you could choose your bird and they'd slaughter it fresh for you. I'd love something similar in the Los Angeles area; failing that, I'm looking for the best place where I can reserve a fresh, heritage bird -- happy to pay extra for it.
Yet another entry in the "where should I live in LA" files: I got a job with an aerospace company in the El Segundo/Hawthorne area. I'm thinking about living in Palms. Will I hate my commute? Are there other places I should consider living? [more inside]
Where (besides Manic Panic, ugh) can I buy funky, semi-permanent hair dyes in Los Angeles? Preferably today? [more inside]
I'm a college student in Los Angeles who originally hails from NY. While home for the summer, I discovered two e-newsletters (nonsensenyc and theskint) that featured fun, cheap, often off-the-wall happenings in New York City. Now I'm trying to find an LA equivalent. [more inside]
Looking for early brunch/late breakfast options on Sunday near LAX. [more inside]
My girlfriend and I have lived, pool-less, in LA for about 3 years now. We decided that we'd take a little mini-vacation this weekend and check out some part of the city we'd never seen. Unfortunately, its labor day and our attempts to low-ball Priceline aren't bearing fruit. More inside! [more inside]
I'm trying to suss out my own taste for engagement ring purposes and would like to try on emerald and/or blue sapphire rings to see if I like them as much in practice as I do in theory. Where can I do this in the greater L.A. area? I would prefer not to go to the downtown jewelry district (again), but if someone can recommend a shop there with emerald and sapphire rings IN STOCK to TRY ON and not just loose gems or settings separately, I'm open to the idea. [more inside]
So, I didn't get the apartment I applied for in my last question. But . . . I'm moving into a surprisingly cheap three bedroom apartment in West Hollywood! I've lived east of Vermont pretty much from the start of my time in LA, and my early brief stint in West Hollywood was pretty miserable. I'm a little sad to leave Echo Park, but I want to get psyched about West Hollywood! [more inside]
Hi, I'm looking for a good, affordable veterinarian for two dogs in LA near Midcity/Midwilshire/Koreatown. Personal experiences especially welcome. Obligatory photo in comments!
First week of October, on a Sunday. 12-hour layover at LAX, but here's the thing: I've done LA. What can I do that won't feel repetitive? [more inside]
Where are the best areas in the Southern California region for a new kayak owner to become familiar with kayaking? [more inside]
I'm an inexperienced driver in LA who is starting researching how to buy a car (I'm considering both new and used at this point but probably the latter is more likely; I'll definitely be going to some dealer showrooms) for the first time. I don't know much about cars and I am feeling a bit lost. [more inside]
I need a medical certificate signed by a doctor ASAP so I can apply for a Belgian visa. Where can I do this on short notice in Los Angeles? Complicating details inside. [more inside]

It looks like I will be moving to LA in as little as 6-8 weeks. I would like to use a moving company to make this happen as my parents and friends will largely be unavailable at the time I need to go go go. Can you recommend a moving service in San Diego, and can you tell me what I should be aware of from a safety, budget, bargaining, etc standpoint? [more inside]
So we moved to Los Angeles four days ago (in what I think is Mid-Wilshire-- the closest landmarks are the tar pits and the Grove) and while I've been eagerly reading past archives of LA lifehacks and tips, I could use some further advice. [more inside]
What are the best Korean restaurants for vegans/vegetarians in LA, preferably but not necessarily in Koreatown, which are not exclusively vegan/vegetarian?
I’m hosting a day-long meeting for nine people near LAX in September. Can you recommend a hotel in the neighborhood that’s moderately upscale? By which I mean, suitable for successful, middle-aged professionals who, luckily, understand that we’re not made of money. [more inside]
For the last few years I've been going to the Women's Clinic and PP for my routine exams, BC, etc. as needed but it's time to find a regular OB/GYN. I also need to replace my retired GP. Please refer me to your awesome doctors located in the Santa Monica/Venice/MDR/WLA area! [more inside]
Family -- including my preteen cousin -- is coming to visit me in Los Angeles and I'm not sure where to bring them. Special personality snowflakes inside. [more inside]
How much is it worth to you to have (relative) freedom of choice? Enrolling in health insurance and I'm debating between an HMO and a PPO (both under Blue Shield of CA). The difference in cost is roughly $1,000. I'm a 26 year old female but I'm not exactly "healthy". I have mysterious, debilitating, chronic joint pain all over (undiagnosed as of yet), a couple car accident-related injuries that flare up every now and then, and I need to get a pap smear every 3 months due to a recent scare. So acupuncturists, chiropractors, internists, rheumatologists, and gynecologists must all be within easy reach for me. [more inside]
I've got a wife, two small kids, a dog (although the dog doesn't always come with us), and an insatiable urge to get the hell out of LA in July. Where should we go? We'd like to rent a house in an area that's not too pricey but still nice and clean. Has to be within, say, a 4 hour drive of LA. Near the beach is a plus. Maybe not completely swamped with people is a plus. Are there any hidden gems, or should we just go to Santa Barbara like everyone else?
I will be in Los Angeles for a couple days next week and have a bit of free time in between some appointments. I won't have a car, I plan on taking the shuttle to my hotel. I'm staying at the Crown Plaza in Beverly Hills. I will be getting in around 11am on Tuesday, but then don't have "anything" to do until 7pm. The following day I will have the afternoon free after 2p. My flight home is Thursday at 5pm, so I in theory have the morning. [more inside]
I'm having brunch in Santa Barbara this weekend, and then driving back to Los Angeles where I live. After brunch I'd like to drive for a while into the wilderness, park my car, and then ride my rigid frame mountain bike on some scenic single track (or fire roads, sure) for a few hours before heading home. Where should I go? [more inside]
Pretty basic: my partner and I are relocating from the East Coast to Los Angeles in July; I am hoping to find a job (or jobs) in one of LA's many fascinating cultural institutions. Primarily looking for positions in research, outreach, or education. I am looking for any suggestions as to listserves, forums, job posting boards, or other places where I can start looking for posted positions, as well as any local groups like the EMPs that I might be able to join once there. [more inside]
I'd like either a specific recommendation, or a place to do a search, for an attorney that handles labor/employment/unpaid wages issues in Los Angeles. [more inside]

I am trying to figure out how to get to Los Angeles on a small budget, to visit a doctor for a chronic condition. The condition itself causes difficulty getting around. I need some suggestions on how to make this "work". [more inside]
Coffee? Drinks? Food? What's good in Silverlake/K-Town LA? [more inside]
I've been going to a repair shop here in LA for a while that I found through the Car Talk fora, but have been increasingly unhappy with them. I took my girlfriend's 2002 Ford Focus in to get an estimate on replacing the mirror, and got back a quote of $175ish, $100 for the part and $75 for the labor (meaning, an hour and a quarter for them at $60 per hour). The thing is, there are third-party mirrors for about $30, and from doing the same thing on a car years ago, I remember it taking about 20 minutes with the right tools. Are they trying to rip me off? Is this a reasonable ballpark for what seems like pretty minor work (the whole assembly pops on and off)? I don't have the tools to do this now (I'd need a deeper socket), so should I buy the part and take it to them? Are dealer mirrors really that superior? (It's out of warranty by now, obviously.) Should I take it to someone else? [more inside]
My wife is working on a grant application for a research trip to Los Angeles centered around getting a feel for old Hollywood and the western part of L.A. (this is working towards a novel taking place from the 50s to roughly the early 90s, FWIW). We're trying to put together a budget for the proposal, and were hoping to get some guidance. [more inside]
I recently moved to Downtown Los Angeles, and am getting a kick out of exploring the neighborhood--it's changed a lot since I last visited in the early 2000s, has amazing architecture, and a fascinating mix of people and different communities. But I'm new to Los Angeles and unfamiliar with the neighborhood... what are the gems of downtown that are worth checking out?
I've been to LA probably a dozen times or so, but mostly for events or a quick trip to Disney. My friends and I are taking a cruise that disembarks next Sunday morning, around 10am. Our flight from LAX doesn't depart until 7:50 PM, so we have a day to kill in LA proper. [more inside]
Where can I go dancing in Los Angeles? [more inside]
Is such a thing even possible? I have always rented apartments and am now looking into purchasing a loft, preferably, in either San Francisco or Los Angeles. I really have no interest in then paying for "rent" to some HOA at around $400/month. Is there a reasonable way to not do so, or does it entail looking for solo owned places which are probably really expensive? I'm hoping to keep it around 500k total. Thanks in advance for any advice.
West-side LA Rental question: My first year's lease is up. I asked my property manager about renewing, and the manager told me, "oh, once your 12mo is up, you just go month-to-month, no contract." What's going on here? [more inside]
I've been doing frontend web development for around 15 years and want to find a new position at the lead/architect level. I know a few sites to look at, and plenty of recruiters contact me, but what else can I do? [more inside]
I just signed up for Uber and I want to do right by the driver. A service charge is included, and the web site says "no need to tip." Is tipping really not expected? [more inside]
We'll be in L.A. for 2-3 weekdays in mid-March, and while one of our evenings is scheduled, we have no idea what to do with the rest of our time. We'll be staying in or near Hollywood, and won't have a car, but don't mind taking transit. We're especially looking for suggestions for one really very nice, splurge-y place for dinner, as well as great inexpensive places to eat. Also interested in: coffee-snob coffee; fancy cocktails; craft beer; fun/interesting/unique places to shop; anything else that seems interesting. We also really like live shows (comedy/improv/podcast/music), but most of the L.A. shows we know about are on the weekend. And I'm planning to go to Jenette Bras for a fitting, but I'd love suggestions for any other bra shops that carry sizes in the G+ range.
