I have to take two weeks off work in the next two months, and thought it would be a great idea to learn to drive. I've heard of 'intensive courses', which would theorically let you pass the driving test after 40+ hours -- in more or less 7 days.
But! I'm not sure this is a great idea... (more inside)

Why shouldn't I drink the water from the taps in my new dorm room? I just moved into a residence hall in London, and the residence hall info packet instructed us to drink water from the kitchen taps only, not the taps for the sinks in our bedrooms. What's the deal?

I ordered something from an Etsy seller located in London on November 15th, and I still haven't received it. Seller claims she shipped it in November and blames the crazy snow in London on the delay. So, my brothers and sisters on the other side of the pond, is it true? Have you had the blizzard of the century, or what?

A friend, a student, is stuck in London over Christmas: no family or close friends to hang out with over the day itself etc. What could he do, by himself, to make it all warm and fuzzy. Anything from travel (if that becomes possible in the next few days) to stuff to do around London that he wouldn't otherwise get around to.

I'm looking for a small, local Japanese restaurant, anywhere in London, with amazing, traditional Japanese food. In New York there are a wealth of late-night quiet Japanese places where you can get more than just sushi, sashimi, tempura, rolls and so on. The kind of place it seems improper to laugh loudly, and one must be careful with one's use of wasabi. Does London have anything similar?

My housemate wants to drink from charming vintage teacups. Unfortunately, so does everyone else in East London, so round here they tend to only show up in cutesy-hipster shops at ridiculously inflated prices. Is there anywhere in London where one can still find them without the trend premium?

I'm going to be in London on business for a week, and I may wind up with a couple of afternoons to myself. I don't have a burning need to do lots of sight-seeing while I'm there -- I'll probably be quite jetlagged during that free time, since it will occur at the beginning of my trip -- but I'd love any suggestions of absolute must-sees, quiet spots where it would be nice to sit and read, or lovely bookstores or coffee (tea?) shops.

I'm an American moving to London soon. Because I don't know anyone there, I'm going to try to join some groups, take classes, and volunteer to meet people and generally just get out of my house.
Of course, finding available classes and volunteering opportunities is easy, but it's considerably harder to figure out which ones are actually likely to be worthwhile.
What groups, volunteer organizations, classes, and events venues have you had the best experiences with?
