renting a cell phone in London

I live in the U.S. and want to rent a cell phone in London next month (for a week.) After spending time trying to nail down a company there - I got nothing, except for Sprint and they seem kind of pricey. Can anyone recommend a good cell phone rental? (or warn me of ones to stay away from?) thank you

What are the best London street maps?

I'm going to live in London for a year, and want to know where I'm going. Which street maps should I purchase? I'll probably end up getting two: a smaller one for quick reference, and a more comprehensive one to keep at home. When I was a student in Paris, everyone carried the Atlas Routier Plan de Paris — what's the equivalent?

books about london?

I'm going to London for a week soon - do you know of any books/stories that would offer insight/history/accounts etc. to help me better appreciate my experience there. (maybe something like Bill Bryson's "Notes From A Small Island"- but more focused on Londontown?) I read Washington Irving's "Alhambra" before visiting there and it really "brought the place alive" thank you for any suggestions!

I need a birthday cake (in London)!

I need a birthday cake for Friday (Sat morning at the latest). Doesn't have to be anything exciting, just something that can feed about 20 people, and says 'Happy Birthday' on it. I live in London - where on earth would I go to get such a thing? I guess I could try large supermarkets, but there aren't many in central London, and it would be nice to get something 'handmade', by a decent bakery. All suggestions gratefully recieved!
