Could someone show this Linux n00b to use ffmpeg to convert a folder full of PNGs to an MPEG? The system I'm running doesn't have Mencoder, and I don't have root (it's a Dreamhost shell account). Thanks!

How do I setup monitor "gridlines" on Linux? Nvidia has software for Windows that let's you divide your monitor into virtual sub-monitors or set gridlines so that if you maximize a window in that certain section, it only maximizes to that particular area. This is particularly useful on big monitors. Does anyone know of any utilities on Linux that do this or how to configure KDE or Gnome (or I suppose another window manager) to do this? [more inside]

I wish to rip DVDs to a Linux server and then watch them at my leisure on my TV via either a wired or wireless network. There appear to be countless devices that will stream videos (like this) but I haven't been able to tell which will play DVDs off a network (with menus and all) and which just stream plain-old-MPEGs. Has anyone got experience with a digital media gadget that will do this?
