I have a blog, which I did have available at blog.example.com. I have recently moved it to be a subdirectory of my main site www.example.com/blog. I am having some trouble with redirecting old links from the subdomain across the the new main site subdirectory, and I really need some help to get it working right. can someone help me craft a .htaccess file to handle the redirects?

How can we automatically block DOS type attacks in a load balanced environment? We used to have mod_evasive on Apache, but now Apache is behind a a load balancer and so does not see the external IPs. We are manually blacklisting IPs in Shorewall - but would like something on the load balancer to do this automatically on detection. Running Linux, Shorewall, Apache and Pound as load balancer.

Two domain names loading the same website - only the websites aren't being served from the same folder, despite the fact that they are served from the same server. There exist two folders: users on a Unix machine. How can I get both domain names to serve up the website from the same folder? And is there any reason I should NOT do this? [more inside]

Why would a server start refusing http requests from itself? Curl, wget, lynx- all of them used to work, now I just get "connection refused". FTP still works, though, and it's only a problem with Apache- requests to the Lighttpd server on the same box work just fine.

I know how to make database-driven web sites using Windows servers, Access, IIS, and ASP.

I want to learn how to do the same using Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP, and... whatever you use instead of Access.

Where do I start?

Is there any way to write to a directory via a script without giving both the directory and the script 777 perms? More specifically the script is writing to a different directory than it is in and I cannot write to that directory without giving it 777 perms. This is a Linux server using Apache web server.

I have been looking at changing my web development focus from Windows/ASP/.NET to LAMP(Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Python/Perl) because my gut is telling me that this is where things are going. Oh, Java should be in there as well.

What's the skinny on LAMP in the real world (Netcraft surveys aside)? Is it difficult to change to LAMP/Java? Is the open source thing really sticking?

Three'fer:
(1) Is there a significant difference between running Linux on Opterons vs. Xeons? Is one clearly better? For MySQL? For Apache/PHP?
(2) Ever hosted with Cogentco? Is there anyone else with prices like that? (100Mbps at $1000/month)
(3) What's your favorite server vendor for typical 2-way 1U systems? (Looking at Dell, IBM, Penguin; where does Google buy them again?)
