I've had a Toshiba 5205-S119 laptop for a little over a year now. About a month ago the system fan started to periodically make a grinding noise (or as one person on usenet described it "like running a matchstick up and down a comb"). I have a Toshiba e310, that mysteriously stopped starting up when I turned it on. It's not completely dead, it comes up with the default bootscreen and then just sits there. Windows XP detects an unknown device, and that's it. I've tried doing a hard reset, soft reset, and letting the battery drain. Is there any use for it? Does anyone know of a way to recover it? i just got a toshiba m30-s309 laptop and i'm trying to get everything working in mandrake linux 9.2, especially APM so i can get the battery indicator working. i plan to upgrade to kernel 2.6.1, but does anyone have specific advice they could offer as to how to get APM working? do i just append apm=on to lilo?
