My wife and I are looking for a vacation home roughly between Springfield IL and St Louis MO on a lake which is clean enough for swimming. I haven't been able to find good sources regarding which lakes in the area are safe. We are primarily concerned about agricultural chemical run off of herbicides and pesticides.
I'm looking for a good spot to see - sit and watch quietly - Lake Superior, in Minnesota. I'm basically looking for a quiet place where I can spend the day sitting and watching very old water without much interruption or awareness of the existence of people, cities, and so on. Does anyone know the area well enough to suggest a place in northern MN where I can get my quiet view of the waters for a day or two during the coming week?
Ever been to Grand Marais, MN? where did you go? What did you do?

In the last year, I've noticed more people flying American flags from the beds of pickup trucks. I did some travelling earlier this month and also saw this in Arizona and Utah, but not in Washington DC. The reason for that geographic distinction might be obvious; a different demographic lives and works in the DC Metro area than Salt Lake, Tucson or Portland. But it reminds me of the couple of years right after 9-1-1, when people were flying little flags from their driver's windows. [more inside]
The kids and I will be accompanying my husband when he goes to a conference at Snow Bird for a week. My kids range from 10 to 15, love science, nature and hiking. We plan to go at least 1 day to Antelope Island and to look at the Temple. What are some not to miss things to do, hikes to see while we are in the area? Please put approximate lengths for hikes if you know them. Awesome museums, historical sites and others also welcome. We will be there Monday through Friday. Thanks.
I live in the Deep South; everyone goes to the beach for vacation. I hate the beach in the summertime (it is way too hot). Where should my wife & go on vacation this summer? I would like a cold, deep lake to swim in, hiking trails, and some privacy. She would like a cottage or cabin on said lake. Would prefer an area that is LGBT friendly (will settle for agnostic), and that we can get to on Delta (we have vouchers to burn).
I am in search of beach towns where your lodging is walking distance from the beach, shops, restaurants, etc. Any climate/geography is OK. Any large body of water is OK but ocean/beach preferred. [more inside]
We have a lake in our backyard. We'd like to fix it, or get it fixed, cheaply. [more inside]
We're located in zip 97035, currently get Comcast and, frankly, it's pretty slow and, worse, unstable. So spotty that I feel like I'm living in the late 90's.
I'm looking for a children's book I read in the mid-90s about a young girl who falls through a lake into another place. Sound familiar to anyone? I've got a few more details to share. [more inside]

Need help identifying a bird I saw today. I was driving along Jordan Lake, near Chapel Hill, NC. A large bird flying over the lake folded its wings in slightly, and glided down, in a slight partial spiral, to the lake surface and grabbed a fish. I'd guess I was about 200 feet away. I've seen eagles and osprey at the lake. This bird was that size, with a very large wingspan. Coloring: Appeared black; may have been dark brown. Markings: White on the trailing underside of the wings, at least one-half the width of the wing, beginning at the body and continuing approx. 80 percent of the way to the wing tip. I didn't notice any other markings.

My wife and kids are flying into Detroit for my grandfathers 90th birthday. They have never experienced Michigan in the summertime. I would like to find a nice lake to rent a house / cottage within a few hours of Detroit. We will only have a few days after the party so recommending Traverse or Ludington is probably not going to work without feeling really rushed. Can anyone recommend a lake / area within a few hours of Detroit where my wife can experience the beauty that is Michigan?

How can you tell where water came from? Lets say I give you a bucket of water taken from a local water source (river, lake, etc). There's some plants and maybe a fish in it as well.
