How long can shoe LED lights last?

I am in love with a pair of (women's) shoes that have LED lights in them that twinkle when you step. I am unlikely to wear them more than 2-3 times a year. The shoe's FAQ says they should last for 10,000 steps. Assuming I am not walking all that much when I do wear them, how long will they last? [more inside]

Advice for LED light installation

What's that, Aunt Ocherdraco? Why, nephew, it's a Phee!

My not quite two year old nephew is fascinated by lights. He calls them phee, which is adorable. I discovered today that he is so fascinated with them that he enjoyed watching me, via webcam, blink on and off the plain white led on my phone. I have a feeling that if I were to amass a small arsenal of brightly colored, differently blinking—dare I say it?—color-changing and/or blink-speed-coordinating lights, I would be favorite auntie for at least fifteen minutes at a go. (Which is a long time for a toddler!) My requirements within. [more inside]

Fun with LEDs

I want to start messing with LEDs; I have two (similar) projects in mind. I want a strip of multi-colored LEDs to respond to music. And second, inspired in part by this thread, I'm interested in learning about turning sound-responsive LEDs into a costume. I imagine those two projects are pretty similar, other than needing a portable power supply for the latter, right? So, can anyone help me figure out what I should get to start with? [more inside]

Help me un-SAD my bathroom

I recently moved. The only light in my bathroom is from five of these bulbs (with the smaller bases -- I don't know exactly what they're called) over the medicine cabinet. I'm wondering if there are nice, bright, LED (full spectrum?) SAD-fightin' bulbs, ideally with warm white light, that I could screw in in their place. Any additional brightness would be welcome to help my brain as I get ready for the day and the year gets darker (I have to get up very early for work). Thanks very much!

Which LED light bulbs do I want in my bathroom?

My bathroom has six light bulbs in it and, to my shame, they're incandescents. I'd like to replace them with LEDs so I never have to think about them again. Which LED bulbs are most like your standard 60W incandescents? [more inside]

Help Me H4x0r My Xmas Lights?

I bought a few strands of cheap LED Xmas lights this year. They include a circuit box with several settings to make the lights flash in different patterns. The circuit box resets itself (to a new annoying setting) each time the lights are unplugged or when it shorts out in the rain, and I also suspect the box is the product's "built-in expectancy" (since otherwise LEDs might last too long to be profitable. Can I bypass the box? [more inside]

Circuit/Battery combos for driving a single 5mm LED

I'd like to use a single 5mm UV LED (3.4Vf, 20-25mA) to charge a daub of glow-in-the-dark paint. It only needs to be lit around 1 minute of every 10 (or 6 seconds of every 60), and only when the (room) lights are out. What battery/circuit would be most economical to operate, and require the least-frequent battery changes? [more inside]

How is this color-changing LED array being driven?

Electronics/LED Folks: I bought a few cheap, poorly-assembled LED color-changing orb-things and I'm pretty sure they're the coolest objects I have ever owned. I cracked 'em open, and damned if I know what is going on in there, but it looks simple/cheap as all hell. Help me figure it out, I'll post a build-log/parts list somewhere, and in short-order we can all be ass-deep in home-made, disarmingly sublime mood-lighting. [more inside]
