Is it a good idea to drive out of LA on friday 23rd may for SFO bwn 4-6 pm, if we avoid highways? -- we are driving to SFO for memorial weekend. we cannot leave before 5 due to work. some friends advised us to start at 8-9 pm due to traffic. Is it a good idea instead to leave at 5 pm but avoid highways till we get out of LA and then get onto I-5?

What's the best 1-2 yr old 4WD-capable car? Best for us means: fuel economy, reliability, non-behemoth-SUV-ness, aesthetic and reasonable cost (<$25k). Also: any knowledge about Subaru Outbacks and SoCal 4WD dealers.

I'm relocating to LA from Chicago next month. I've been looking on Craigslist for apartments, and I'm leery of the accuracy of the lister's location descriptions. I've gotten plenty of advice as to what neighborhoods to look in, but I really don't know if I'm actually looking in those places.

I've just moved to L.A. and need immediate employment to provide some short-term financial security. Locals, who (or what) would you recommend? (e.g., What are the least insane and/or most humane temp agencies? What are some cool places to do menial, customer-facing work that actually pay a living wage?)

Really like the discount "European" hotels with tiny rooms and the shared bath, like 500 West in San Diego and the Belnord in NYC. Where’s the similar cheap place in LA? And since I can’t imagine there’s many, lets open up the question to all metro-American tourist capitals.

From L.A. to Santa Fe and back. By Car, necessarily. Next month. I'm planning a 1.5 day drive, a 3 day stay in Santa Fe (already taken care of, thanks), a 1.5 day drive back to L.A. Where should I sleep en route? I'm thinking Flagstaff, right? Sightseeing in or around Flagstaff? (touristy stuff is OK unless it's something horribily overcrowded or plainly for kids). Is the drive too long/boring? Any better ideas to make the trip more fun? Suggestions? Thanks.
