Are there any English-language translations of sources describing death by sayak (사약; 賜藥) poisoning in Korean history? I'm interested in what the effects of the poison were on the body.
My wife has her green card. In the future she may consider becoming a US citizen. If anyone happens to know off hand if the immigration laws have changed to allow this? So far everything I have found online is cryptic. I'm not in a rush for an answer and may eventually see an immigration lawyer about it. Curious if anyone ran into this before.
My job prospects back home (in the US) are not looking good. I taught English in South Korea for three years, and now I'm thinking of heading back to somewhere in Asia to teach English again. This time, however, I'd like to do it for real by getting a CELTA and finding a "real job" as opposed to the dead-end hagwon stuff I did in Korea. How realistic is this plan? [more inside]

Looking for recommendations for currency transfer services that are reputable, reliable and won't tack on as many fees as an international bank wire. This is for sending from a personal bank account in the US (from USD) and transferring to a personal bank account in South Korea (to KRW). In case it makes a difference, I'm interested in both of these scenarios: [more inside]
In the late 1960s and early '70s my mother was part of a group of women that raised funds for an orphanage in South Korea . They kept a scrapbook which includes the letters and photos that were sent to them. I am moving soon and want to pass this scrapbook on to someone who might find it meaningful (the orphanage if it still exists? one of the children? a scholar?) but am not sure who it would be appropriate to give to or how to find them.
Arirang, my go-to Korean spot on 32nd Street HAS CLOSED. What is a good replacement? How can my heart be satisfied? Any borough! Help me, mefites!
YANML, but I am a US resident, and have a Korean passport and a US green card. I am going to Canada for less than a week, to give an unpaid talk and meet with people in my field (though the hosts are paying for airfare and hotels). According to the official websites, I'd say this qualifies as a business trip. Does anyone have experience with a similar trip? Do business trips raise more flags at the border?
As of this writing, North Korea has had two Internet outages in 48 hours. A lot of people seem to watch when Internet service goes down for countries and companies. But I don't recall anyone saying North Korea's Internet had gone down until within the last couple of days. Has anyone reported North Korea's Internet going down in the past?
The Kim dynasty in North Korea makes explicit claims about the family's divinity and recounts absurd propaganda about their accomplishments. Do the Kims believe any of it? How many North Koreans believe them? Do the Kims think anyone in the rest of the world does?
I love reading Chinese philosophy, and I'm looking to get into some Korean philosophy, just to see what their take is. But I'm having trouble figuring out where to start. I'd like to read uniquely Korean things, or takes on confucianism and taoism, from any time period, or just interesting thoughts posed by Korean philosophers. I'd also like to read some Japanese texts in the same vein, and once again don't really know where to start. I'm looking for the best English translations. Any suggestions?
This December I'm going to Shanghai and possibly Seoul. I'd love your tips for museums, restaurants, hotels, and more! [more inside]

I am a student and I want to fly off for some time before the coming Fall semester. I was thinking going away for 2 weeks. Spending 1 week in Busan, S-Korea, then 1 week in Japan, for example Tokyo. I tried using flight search engines but the price is exorbitant for me. [more inside]

A month or two ago I read about a network of clandestine reporters who use old cell phones to collect information inside North Korea and then publish it to the internet. What is the name of that website, and where did I see that article? [more inside]
I've searched previous instances of congee showing up in comments on the Green, but very few actual recipes. None of the recipes I've found online even agree on the rice-to-water ratio or cooking time. Recipes from any nation, savory or sweet and any serving tips or suggestions most welcome!

I'm going to Korea for the first time. It'll be a very short trip because I'm just attending/presenting at a conference at Yonsei University. I need help figuring out a reasonable trip length, a place to stay, and which of the many airport-city transportation choices is best. And uh, some other stuff. [more inside]

Hey! I have a long layover in Seoul (landing at Incheon, 5:20AM, departing, 4:30PM, about 11 hours) this Thursday, June 27th. Is it reasonable to head into the city (or somewhere) for food or drink or other amusement in this short span? Can you suggest a micro-itinerary that seems fun to you? I'm also interested in other options, including walking around the city with MeFites.
I live in Korea, but I'm finding it difficult to obtain Korean edition ebooks through Yes24, Aladdin, Kyobo, or even Google Play, because I have a US credit card. Does anyone know of other, hassle-free sources? Thanks in advance.
I just returned (to the US) from a trip to Korea, where I was given a really nice gift: a fancy Cuckoo Induction Heating Korean rice cooker just like this one. That page is in Korean, but the technical details are universal: 220V/60Hz, 3.7A, 824W. What jiggery-pokery will I need to do to make awesome rice here in the States? [more inside]
Please share your recommendations on books about North Korea. I have seen this question from 2007 but I'd like books about history and culture as well as modern day North Korea. Fiction recommendations are also welcome. I have already read and enjoyed Nothing to Envy by Barbara Demick. My only request is that they're available as an eBook - preferably as an ePub.

The chanted chorus of this Korean song (at about 1min) sounds very familiar to me. What song does it remind me of?
I've decided that I want to buy new, "smart" and/or "fashion-forward" clothes, and in my travels through sites like Pinterest I've discovered the phenomenon of the online Far-East retailer (sites like theleesshop.com and top-dresses.com). Specifically for menswear, has anyone bought from places like this, and how have the results been? Buying a nice-looking coat for $22 plus shipping almost seems too good to be true, but I'm sure that's still profitable for the manufacturer and saves on all the uplift that gets added by the retail universe (and western world in general).
I'm starting a Korean class next week, and I'd like to get a broader exposure to modern Korean media. [more inside]

Asking for a friend: I'm in the U.S. and require the services of a stock broker licensed in Korea who speaks English and has experience handling U.S. clients. I'm looking for any referrals to firms or individuals who work with well known firms. Feel free to MeFi Mail me if you'd rather not post publicly. Bonus question: For circumstances beyond my control I need to take direct ownership of an interest I have in what will become a publicly traded Korean company. I plan to speak to my tax adviser, but are there any particular considerations I need to be aware of in obtaining and holding this investment? My understanding is that I need a licensed broker to take custody for me. I also understand that South Korea is a relatively friendly place for U.S. foreign investment. Thanks!
I really want to share this video I saw a while ago with a friend, for injoke purposes. But I dunno how to find it! Help! I believe it to be either Korean or Japanese pop music. I have little to no memory of the actual song, just the video. 3, maybe 4 East-Asian ladies. Strolling along a sidewalk, holding shopping bags, walking past upscale store windows. The sidewalk moves underneath them, kind of like an omnidirectional conveyor belt. I can remember no other details, really. Other than it was filmed in a studio (obviously), yet gives the impression of being filmed outside via lighting, and there were a lot of pastel shades going on. Oh, and the women are wearing heels. When I visited my brother in Korea, I fell in love with Maekgeolli. I liked the crisper, almost tart stuff, with more carbonation. Now I'm trying to buy it in Korean markets here in LA, and while they've got a lot of it, I can't seem to navigate the varieties. [more inside]
