I'm from out of town (Chicago), but I met a girl here in KC the other day and we've decided to go out tomorrow evening. We're both artsy types with a fondness for adventure and off-the-beaten-path entertainment. I know I could easily defer to her for suggestions, but I'd like to have a few ideas to throw out. I'm up for anything really. It doesn't have to be a proper event or anything- someplace cool to wander around or explore is fine too. Just toss it all out there!! Food suggestions are good too (she's vegetarian). Thanks!!

Kansas or Bust

We're visiting the in-laws in the Lawrence/Kansas City area for Thanksgiving and are looking for some activities to keep us busy. What are the must-see museums, events, and other such places that we can squeeze into our trip?

Assume 2-4 adults, no kids, money not a factor, anywhere within a couple of hours drive from the Lawrence area is eligible. Sports, arts, theater, and train-related experiences are all welcome!

Posting on behalf of my parents: they're moving to the Kansas City area and are looking for some information about what some of the areas around there are like. "We are moving to the Olathe, Kansas area. Can you tell me the character of the different areas around there? We are looking to buy a 3 bedroom house in the 150,000-250,000 range within a 20 minute commute to Garmin [near I-35 and 151st in Oleth]. Overland Park is out due to their pit bull regulation."

Okay, I'm in Kansas City with a group of people for a workshop and we have a wide age-range. Tonight (Friday) and tomorrow night many of us would like to have some fun! Most of us are staying in the Olathe/Overland Park/Lenexa area and aren't sure where to go. Here's what we're looking for. (inside) We have really three age groups that might each like something a little different. This question is really geared mostly for the singles among us.

Guys ages 21-35 - Think testosterone and ladies. (They're all straight as far as I know.)

Guys ages 35-55 - Think sit around and talk old times, maybe listen to live music and maybe the testosterone is still juicing. Come to think of it, a lot like the first group.

Guys ages 55-67 or so - Think something not very loud and not as likely to want to be on the prowl. Though, no doubt, some are! Come to think of it, men are men.

Can you tell we've been bored for 4 days?

So Is the Power & Light district worth the drive and crowd? Is there anything in Johnson County that would be busy with lots of fun people, music, beer/drinks? Of course there has to be. But what are your recommendations?

By the way, the Kansas City area is great! Nothing like most in our group expected. This is a first-class city all the way around.

Desert Driver in the Snow

Is a desert-dweller crazy to plan to drive between Kansas City, Missouri and Eastern Iowa in February? If I'm not crazy, what do I need to know or be prepared for? I don't know the area, have limited experience driving in the snow, and will be driving an economy rental car. I’ve driven these distances before, but through the desert in good travel conditions. I’ll be making the trip to West Branch, Iowa in the daytime but was planning to return to Kansas City after dark (one week later). Should I wait until the next morning for my return trip?

What can you tell me about weather/driving conditions during February? How are I-35 and I-80? Google suggests the trip will take just under 5 hours. Is that realistic in the winter, or should I expect much longer? How much longer? Or am I missing some fantastic other way to get between these two destinations?

Finally, bonus points for any local info on West Branch and the surrounding area – I’ll be there for about a week and am wondering what good options there are for dining out during that period, both lunch and dinner.

My little brother just graduated from school in Indiana and is moving to Kansas City. (the Kansas side) He'll be driving there from the eastern side of Missouri and I want to make him a mix for the road but I'm coming up short on songs! I've already got a few obvious ones but I can use your help filling out my list. I am open to ones about Kansas City, the state of Kansas, the state of Missouri, the midwest, road tripping, America in general, and maybe even graduating/starting out in the adult world. (in descending order of preference :) Serious songs, silly songs, any genre... it's wide open. The songs don't even need to be entirely about these things, if they just mention it, it is enough.

If I'm driving into Kansas City on 71 from the South, what would be the quickest route to KCI Airport? We'll be coming in on a weekday morning, hitting Grandview at about 8:30 am, so morning traffic might be a factor.

Roadtrip! Kansas City MO to Madison WI, to celebrate my birthday over a long weekend in April. Please help us plan with insider advice on local color, tasty food & drink, picturesque roads, historic spots and natural wonders -- anything we'd be silly to miss. I'd really really like to hit The House on The Rock, but that's just an hour outside of Madison, and it would be rad to find some quirky fun stops for the route in between for both coming and going. Is there anything between KCMO & Madison? I'm new around here.

We're a young, silly, romantic couple. Scenic overlooks for "parking" highly desired.

We're all set on stuff to do *in* Madison while we're there.

Recommendation for a spa in Mission Hills, KS area? I want to buy a gift certificate for a friend who lives in the Mission Hills/Shawnee area--the Kansas side of the Kansas City suburbs. Any suggestions? Need a place she can get a massage or a facial and the like. I don't want her to have to drive into Kansas City if possible.

Local cheap broadband, too good to be true?

BroadbandFilter: Any experience with locally owned "fixed wireless" ISPs? I've recently moved into an apartment, and really need internet access that doesn't require me to sit on the balcony to access without permission. I'm in Kansas City, it's cold. In my research I found These guys, but I can find no reviews. The website is unhelpful and the info I got on the phone was this: they are running a special, for 50 bucks a month I get 10meg up 10meg down; ITVN service, and VOIP phone with all the frills. The catch is that it's either a $250 setup fee (I get to keep all the hardware) or a two year contract with the setup fee waived.

Any experience with something like this, or should I go to the eternal call-center-hell that is Time-Warner? I'd really rather support a local business, but I'm very anti-getting screwed.

My band is pondering a move from San Francisco to Kansas City to take advantage of the rent savings and central location for touring. We'll be visiting the town again in a few weeks to check out neighborhoods and rentals -- any advice? Is there a particular part of town that we should check out for a band's homebase/basement practice space? Where are the good rental listings found (Craigslist? the newspaper?)

Moving to Kansas City, single and mid twenties. How do people here socialize? Where do they socialize? About a month ago I moved to Kansas City from midtown Manhattan. I'm working at home and living with family in a southern suburb (Leawood). I grew up here as a little kid and I visited family during holidays so the city is not foreign. I've been to the "rejuvenated" downtown, the Plaza, Westport and all the places one is suppose to go. I'm just having a very hard time connecting and meeting with people. It seems like the young people, at least that I have met, are extending their Big 10 fraternity and sorority lifestyles into their twenties.

I realize this isn't Manhattan and am trying very hard to avoid being the elitist stereotype. I am finding this town so unpretentious that it is almost a fault. I never had problems finding and maintaining a large social circle, finding dates and so on. I am used to having to schedule everything because everyone is so busy, seeking out new restaurants, cultural events and hardly ever seeing my apartment.

I've found myself becoming a pompous asshole and beginning to believe no one here has traveled anywhere, has anything vaguely intellectual to talk about and that this place is the nadir of American culture. This is incredibly narrow-minded, so help a neurotic New Yorker become a laid back Midwesterner.

N.B. I have read previous threads on making friends and the advice within. I'd appreciate tips on adjusting to the Midwest, obviously Kansas City in paticular, how the social scene works, etc. It is quite a culture shock and it seems way too easy to become easily isolated here. I am sure this isn't as bad as it seems, I just haven't figured it out yet.

I'm attending (as my first real vacation in 20 years) the Heinlein Centennial in KCMo in July. What to do; what to do? I'm a photographer, so I'll be looking for interesting things to take pictures of, in my Copious Free Time, and I'll be taking the bus trip to Butler (Heinlein's birthplace) as well, so that city and the likely travel route are also in play.

And, of course, first vacation in 20 years. :-)

Anyone from there, spent any time there, also going to the event? The convention itself is downtown, the 6th, 7th, and 8th; we're getting in some time on the 5th, and coming back on the 9th.

Should I go to Kansas City?

I am thinking about a visit to Kansas City one of these days. Aside from the delicious BBQ, is there anything else worth taking a look at in this fair city? If I end up going, I am probably going to spend about 3 or 4 days in the Kansas City metropolitan area. I think I'll have access to a car, so anything in the region (as long as it's not too far) is fair game.

The problem is this -- I've looked it up on the internets and, frankly, there isn't too much that sounds interesting about the fair City of Kansas. There must be something I'm overlooking.

Also, I'm interested if you know any good barbecue joints.

The company is promoting Improvisational Comedy in the Kansas City area, if that matters at all. We are also officially a 501(c)3 status company so we actually are not-for-profit, meaning we can accept tax write-off-able donations and such.

Looks like we might be moving to Kansas City. We've already read lots of tourist guides, local media, and real estate web sites, but now I need some actual advice. The company I'll work for is in Overland Park, and we want to live someplace a) relatively inexpensive, b) with a good racial and class mixture, and c) moderately hip. Is there such a neighborhood? I'm not interested in an hour-long commute and we have three dogs so a yard is a necessity. We don't know a soul in the area, but that's another problem for another day. Anyone here from that area, or know anything about it?
