I'm a freelance writer in the second year of my career, as well as a lifelong creative writer with several published works. I've done a lot of performing arts blogging and local news writing and I'd like to build on that and get into more paying work as well as increase my publication credits. I had an interview for an okay-fit position. I learned a position with a better fit for my skills recently opened up in the same company, under a different manager. Should the thank you note indicate my intention to apply for the other position as well? Odds of interviewer 1 finding out I applied for job 2 are basically 100%.

I have a pretty powerful, patented, implementation of machine learning software (genetic programming) and left my company a few months back. I have some time and have been looking at possible jobs at various companies. However, many of them seem trivial to boring, in part because I want to do something more meaningful then analyzing social media data or ad data or (ugh!) financial data.

I’ve been researching a lot, and have read time and time again, that during interviews, you’re also interviewing the employer to see if you’re a “good fit” together and that you should never seem desperate for a job, but rather, you should pretend money is no object and you’re only there because you think it would be fun, etc. The question is—how do you do this when you are in fact desperate for money and you need a job ASAP?
