So, my father, sister and I are planning a trip to Europe in mid-June. We need to work out quite where. I need to be able to fly in from London, the others to train or fly to wherever from Lyon. We need to go somewhere where we can stay for about 6 days, and there will be enough to entertain us there or in nearby town. I was wondering about Malta, my sister thought Genoa, my father thought St Tropez (our budget is not endless so perhaps not) Any suggestions?

In one of the original Superman films, Superman flies over the world and at one point Italy. I forget exactly what happens, but I think he rights the leaning tower of Pisa and it shows two of the locals upset. One of them bites his thumb and then raises it to they sky in what must be a rude gesture. Is this gesture still done in Italy today? Bonus points if you are Italian and have done it or you are someone who has seen it in Italy within the last week or so. [more inside]

I'm planning to travel to Italy, probably alone, although a friend might join me, to celebrate my 40th birthday. I've never been there before. My dream is to visit Pompeii and Herculaneum, and my main interests are related to those - art, archaeology, history, etc. Obviously, I want this to be a memorable experience. What should I do? Where should I stay, how should I travel, and what do I absolutely need to see? Please help me plan my trip! [more inside]

Good publisher of Italian classics? I ask only this: the text is as it was first written, the book is free from the pollution of study notes. I suppose I'm looking for the Italian equivalent of England's 'Oxford University Press', or Germany's 'Reclam'.
I'm looking for a video of an Italian vespa commercial from the early 60s (probably aired on the show Carosello), which featured the scooters driven by the boys and all the girls sitting side-saddle behind them. It had snappy music that was punctuated every few seconds by the single lyric "Ves-PA!" (The commercial I'm looking for isn't this one... It was instead made earlier and the kids should be dressed more formally.) Can you help me find it?? Thanks!!

Headline says it all: how do I make the best cannoli filling? Ricotta+powdered sugar+vanilla? How much of each (or other ingredients) should I use? I made it last night with 1.5 lb ricotta, 1 c powdered sugar, and 1/4 tsp vanilla, using a recipe in some old Italian cookbook, but it came out a bit chalky and not as thick/creamy as it is when it comes from a restaurant. Any specific pointers (or any particularly great add-ins)? Lots of Google hits, but I'm trying to filter out the noise. Thanks in advance.

A friend and I are traveling to Italy at the end of June and will be going hiking in the Dolomite mountains. We plan to head out from Bolzano on one of the lifts and hike from rifugio to rifugio (and then back) for about 5 days, with the route to be chosen with help from the tourist office there. Has anyone done this and have 1) any specific advice on which trails to take; 2) recommendations for inexpensive lodging for our one night in Bolzano; 3) suggestions for what we should bring with us (keeping in mind that we want to travel light)?
