Looking for information on Montalto Pavese, in an area called 'Oltrepò Pavese'.
More specifically, the houses, the typical construction and what type of local stone. Any specs on wall construction, carpentry, etc.
Are the local builders/trades still available for stonework and general construction?
Less specific, any knowledge of terrain, food, local towns, tourism and the potential for a tourist/guest house/rental.

I have a chance to go to Milan in mid-October. My husband's ticket will be paid for, so we'll just be out-of-pocket for my ticket and lodging for a week. It's been an expensive year for us so far, and I'm reluctant to lay out money for this trip unless it's likely to be spectacular and relatively inexpensive.
I cringe at the thought of paying for a rental car and staying at an expensive hotel. On the other hand, the thought of a hostel is not very enticing - unless there's a private room and bathroom.
So Mefites - can you recommend spectacular things to do in Milan and places to stay for a frugal traveller? Would this trip be worth it?

I plan to visit Rome during the end of June primarily for a wedding and to meet up with an ex-girlfriend.
I am on a very tight budget and with about 4 days alone, I would like to use the time to partake in some interesting (albeit cheap) activities.
I plan on staying at
Hotel Taormina due to it's location and reasonable price (43 GBP a night) although I'll take suggestions.
Cheap watering holes relative to the hotel and advice on getting from Ciampino airport to the hotel (or one you suggest) would be helpful.
Grazie.

So, my father, sister and I are planning a trip to Europe in mid-June. We need to work out quite where. I need to be able to fly in from London, the others to train or fly to wherever from Lyon. We need to go somewhere where we can stay for about 6 days, and there will be enough to entertain us there or in nearby town. I was wondering about Malta, my sister thought Genoa, my father thought St Tropez (our budget is not endless so perhaps not) Any suggestions?

In one of the original Superman films, Superman flies over the world and at one point Italy. I forget exactly what happens, but I think he rights the leaning tower of Pisa and it shows two of the locals upset. One of them bites his thumb and then raises it to they sky in what must be a rude gesture.
Is this gesture still done in Italy today? Bonus points if you are Italian and have done it or you are someone who has seen it in Italy within the last week or so.

I'm planning to travel to Italy, probably alone, although a friend might join me, to celebrate my 40th birthday. I've never been there before. My dream is to visit Pompeii and Herculaneum, and my main interests are related to those - art, archaeology, history, etc. Obviously, I want this to be a memorable experience. What should I do? Where should I stay, how should I travel, and what do I absolutely need to see? Please help me plan my trip!
