I've taken an exciting job in Italy! Everything has gone well with the immigration process for me, but I'd also like my wife to get here too... [more inside]
Contemplating an Italian vacation (in the range of two weeks or so) in the next year or two, for a family group of about 5-6 people. Google turns up several websites dedicated to renting apartments/houses, but I'd love to hear some personal recommendations. Is Air BNB the best? Vrbo.com? Perhaps there's no real difference between them. [more inside]
It's happening!! Mr. Concolora and I are flying out to London tomorrow to start our three week tenth wedding anniversary European extravanganza and I'm about to pop with excitement. My SO and I will be travelling to Northern Italy (the lakes region) and Slovenia in late August. Huzzah! As we're cementing our plans, it occurs to us that it would be fun to run in some sort of organized running race during that time, even if it's just some running club's 5K. However, it's been hard for us English-speaking Americans to find a reliable source of information as to when any such races will be going on. Can anyone help us? Barring actual races, what running tours, or other such similar things, do people recommend in the Italian lakes region, or in Slovenia? [more inside]
Wife and I are going to Italy in a couple of weeks. It's our first trip there, and one we wanted to do for a long time. Friends that have been there are telling us all the places to see in Rome, Venice, Florence etc. Thing is, other than being in Rome the first & last night, we aren't going to any of those places, and don't really want to! We're planning to get off the beaten path as much as we can. Is this a good/bad idea? I'm having doubts now.. [more inside]
Previous AMF questions have discussed walking into various mobile providers in Italy and just buying a SIM card. Glancing around internet currently suggests that SIM card sales are (more?) heavily regulated in Italy than previously, even to the point of not offering them for sale to someone showing a passport. Curious if any current Italy residents, expats, or students can provide info for the following: US unlocked GSM smartphone owner heading to Italy for 10 days and would like to have reasonable phone and text options to call/text back to states to check on house and pets with housesitter. Data a plus but absolutely not necessary. Any advice to smooth the process of buying a SIM card in Italy would be greatly appreciated.
I will be in Berlin, Prague, Venice, Florence, Rome, Marseilles and Paris this summer. I've never been to any of these places before. [more inside]
Four of us are coming in on different flights and terminals throughout a single morning - what landmark in the Fiumicino airport can we all meet by?
In The Fruit Hunters by Adam Gollner, he mentions "Bologna's Garden of Lost Fruit" as a fruit-focused tourist destination (p. 35). Googling for this name only brings up a Google Books snippet of the book, and trying to translate it to Italian doesn't seem to give anything useful either. What is this place called in Italian, and where can I find it?
I'm planning to travel from Italy to Hungary via Slovenia and Croatia this May. The only things I have booked are my flight into Milan and my flight out of Budapest 17 days later. I'm looking at two different itineraries. Which should I choose? [more inside]

Currently I'm in Italy. In March I'll be travelling to Scotland by train and making stops along the way. Then I'll be flying home to Toronto. My problem is that I have a lot of luggage that I needed for an extended professional stay in Italy, but which will only serve to encumber me when I go traveling. What is the best way for me to forward one large (standard checked baggage) suitcase home to Canada from Italy when I head out? I would especially appreciate any advice based on personal experience. This is pretty random. I had jaw surgery and it didn't come out as planned. I did some research and found a surgeon who works in Rome and I'm interested in consulting him for a revision. He has decades of experience and a particular technique that I think is the right one to fix it. Also, I was born in Italy and I'm an Italian citizen. [more inside]

Staying in Italy for 3 1/2 months from June to October 2012. The Flashdrake and I need SIM cards for our mobile/cell phones while we are there. I must have data access as well, at least 1GB a month. The TelCo industry changes so rapidly however, that I hoped that MeFites might help with current options. In the past we have had not problem with SIM cards overseas, particularly finding the Lebara plans great in Europe as they permitted us to call each other for free. [more inside]

A dear family member suddenly passed in Italy. I live in the Mid-Atlantic USA. I really need to travel to Italy on very short notice for the funeral. I am not a frequent air traveler to begin with, but have never been abroad in my life (though I do have a passport). I have no idea how this works. I want to know anything I should know about getting to and from my destination (e.g., negotiating customs). I also want to know how bereavement fares work, whether I should bother trying to get one, who people have had good experiences with, etc. [more inside]
