Wife and I are going to Italy in a couple of weeks. It's our first trip there, and one we wanted to do for a long time. Friends that have been there are telling us all the places to see in Rome, Venice, Florence etc. Thing is, other than being in Rome the first & last night, we aren't going to any of those places, and don't really want to! We're planning to get off the beaten path as much as we can. Is this a good/bad idea? I'm having doubts now..

Currently I'm in Italy. In March I'll be travelling to Scotland by train and making stops along the way. Then I'll be flying home to Toronto. My problem is that I have a lot of luggage that I needed for an extended professional stay in Italy, but which will only serve to encumber me when I go traveling. What is the best way for me to forward one large (standard checked baggage) suitcase home to Canada from Italy when I head out? I would especially appreciate any advice based on personal experience.

This is pretty random. I had jaw surgery and it didn't come out as planned. I did some research and found a surgeon who works in Rome and I'm interested in consulting him for a revision. He has decades of experience and a particular technique that I think is the right one to fix it. Also, I was born in Italy and I'm an Italian citizen.

Staying in Italy for 3 1/2 months from June to October 2012. The Flashdrake and I need SIM cards for our mobile/cell phones while we are there. I must have data access as well, at least 1GB a month.
The TelCo industry changes so rapidly however, that I hoped that MeFites might help with current options.
In the past we have had not problem with SIM cards overseas, particularly finding the
Lebara plans great in Europe as they permitted us to call each other for free.

[Italy filter] There are many enticing offers in Italy nowadays for internet accounts including "free" (in the sense of "included in the price") phonecalls, etc., all of them looking quite a lot cheaper than my present contract (Alice from Telecom Italia). I am working on a short persuasive paper (about 1000 words) for a Narrative in the Novel and Film class, in which I must argue for the inclusion of a film of my choosing in a future iteration of the class. The film about which I have chosen to write about is
Il Conformista, which would (theoretically) be used in a section of the class called "Terror, Surveillance, and Human Rights". I've been having trouble finding critical essays about the film that specifically look at the film's portrayal of Fascist Italy. What are some good sources for essays on this film, or on the portrayal of WWII-era Italy in cinema? (I am not looking for reviews of the film, of which I have plenty.)

My family is traveling to Florence in October. This is not our first Florentine rodeo, so to speak - we've done a lot of sightseeing and exploring on past visits. This time, we thought it might be fun to delve a little deeper and take a class (cooking?), workshop, special organized tour, etc. Four adults, fairly foodie, up for anything that isn't too physically strenuous. Any MeFi "Been There Done That" recommendations?

What excellent red wine should my partner buy in Italy to bring home that he can't get here? We're fans of Luigi Righetti Amarone, but we can, uh, get it in Toronto. Seems silly to fly it home.
Likes: dry, full-bodied, spicy. also enjoy dry pinot noirs (lighter body).
Dislikes: sweet, fruity, herbal
Price: up to $100/bottle, but that would have to be out of this world amazing.

I was in Venice for a few days at the end of March, and several times saw young people in the street participating in a weird ritual: they would read out a passage from a hand-made poster, the crowd would laugh, and someone would attack them with a foodstuff -- I saw a lot of flour, once a meat tray, and an unfortunate soul
having canned whipped cream injected down his pants. What?

So, my father, sister and I are planning a trip to Europe in mid-June. We need to work out quite where. I need to be able to fly in from London, the others to train or fly to wherever from Lyon. We need to go somewhere where we can stay for about 6 days, and there will be enough to entertain us there or in nearby town. I was wondering about Malta, my sister thought Genoa, my father thought St Tropez (our budget is not endless so perhaps not) Any suggestions?

A friend and I are traveling to Italy at the end of June and will be going hiking in the Dolomite mountains. We plan to head out from Bolzano on one of the lifts and hike from rifugio to rifugio (and then back) for about 5 days, with the route to be chosen with help from the tourist office there. Has anyone done this and have 1) any specific advice on which trails to take; 2) recommendations for inexpensive lodging for our one night in Bolzano; 3) suggestions for what we should bring with us (keeping in mind that we want to travel light)?

I recall eating a meal in Italy that I THINK was just rice, canned tuna, and white beans drizzled in olive oil. Is this a real "dish"? I've put those four ingredients together and it doesn't taste the same. And it's a really monochromatic meal. Anyone have any thoughts on the "real" dish, or if not, how to spice up the one I remember? It was in Parma.
