My fiancee and I are considering Turkey for our honeymoon next October. Should we take a pre-arranged tour or book all our own hotels, in-country travel, etc.? Our considerations are money and how much effort it will be to plan a long trip to a new place in addition to a wedding.

It's my birthday this weekend (hooray!) and I've just found out from my wife that my present is a trip to Istanbul. Tomorrow morning.
Ordinarily I'm kind of an obsessive travel planner but since I only just found out I haven't spent the past month digging around and I'm fairly clueless about the city. I know MrsPerkins has done a lot of planning so I'm not worried about being stuck for things to do but I'd love to hear any general advice, suggestions for things we really shouldn't miss and anything else about the city it would be cool to check out (restaurants, cafes, aquariums, bakeries...that sort of thing).

Should I buy some Turkish currency now, ahead of my two-week September trip to Istanbul, to hedge against the (hopefully remote) possibility that U.S. politicians will not raise the debt ceiling by August? Or euros? Are there other steps I should take now to protect myself, just in case?

I'm arriving at Ataturk Airport in Istanbul nine hours before my connecting flight. I was wondering what recommendations people had for how to spend this time? I can't do anything too involved as I need to be back at the airport a few hours before my flight, but I would like to see something of the city!
Thank you!

No luck. Even the LA and NYC public libraries got nuthin'. Fabled MeFite librarian posse, how the hell can I get my grubby paws on a copy of "Histoire des Juifs de Rhodes, Chio, Cos, etc." by Professor Abraham Galanté (1873 - 1961), published in Istanbul in 1935?
