An Irish Real Estate question...

I've been looking at real estate in County Cavan, Ireland and have a question about the wording. I notice that the word "derelict" is used - does this have a specific meaning in Irish law as it relates to property, or are they using it in the common sense of neglected? There are a lot of properties that are described as derelict but look entirely livable with a few weeks labor. [more inside]

What is this song I heard on the radio

Name this song! It was on 9.07 WFUV in NYC at 2pm a few Sunday's back during a Gaelic music show. Pretty sure it's in Gaelic. But I can't find the playlists for that show on WFUV. It is funky .

I'm Irish/Canadian. I'd like that for my common law partner too.

This is one of one things I've been meaning to get around to for years. I'm a Canadian with an Irish passport (acquired through my Grandparents) that expired 20 years ago. I'd like to renew it and if possible, confer Irish citizenship on my common law partner. [more inside]

That's a lot of soda bread...

By mistake my company has booked me double baggage allowance for my flight to Dublin for a conference, so I have a capacity of 46kg. I live in London. What kind of heavy yet-hard-to-get in the UK thing should I buy to make the most of this? My only thought was a case of whisky or possibly a very large amount of Guinness. I only have one free morning (Thursday), which is also the day I fly out. Is there anything I'm not thinking of?

Irish Genealogy Website Question: Help me find a lost baby?

I need help with Irish genealogy websites and where to look. I've joined a couple of sites; the site that looks the most promising is nickel-and-diming me to death just to look at the info that shows up in their searches. Irish records can be spotty, so some of them are totally wrong. So, askMetafilter, where do I go from here without spending another 34 euros to see five records that are probably incorrect anyway? Recommendations for Irish SIM card for American

I will be traveling to Dublin, Ireland frequently in the next 6 mos - year and I need to find an appropriate SIM vendor. I have done a ton of research but I am still hamstrung in terms of concrete advice. Here is what I know: I have unlocked my old iPhone 4 for this purpose. My husband and I have AT&T for our stateside smartphone service. My mother has Verizon (my preschooler will be with her). I will use the phone to call my husband and daughter nightly (probably two separate calls) and I will want some data coverage for navigation, texting, etc. I would prefer not to initiate any kind of contract until after the first trip. Any recommendations? TIA.

How can I create digital choropleth maps of Ireland?

Does anyone know if gis data for irish townlands, parishes, and/or electoral districts is available? If not, would it be possible to draw a vector map and then somehow connect each region on the map to data on a spreadsheet? I can always color the hundreds of little pieces by hand, but I thought I'd check if there was an easier way, maybe in cartodb or processing. Note: I am not a programmer. Thanks! [more inside]

Who's yo' daddy, William X. O'Brien?

Does anyone know anything about the Irish trade unionist and politician William X. O'Brien (23 January 1981 - 31 October 1968)? I read that he was born in Clonakilty and, descending from the O'Brien family in that area, I'm curious if he's a relative. I would think it'd be easy to get a little family information on him given his relative prominence, but I haven't turn up much.
