What general purpose reddit-like online communities do people use outside of the US? Do they have subreddit-type features? Do they support topical discussions? Do they have NSFW channels? Is there a Chinese or Japanese equivalent?
My fiance sold and shipped some very expensive, heavy, one-of-a-kind electronics to an online friend overseas. They were damaged during international shipping. The purchase price was over a thousand dollars and the items are literally irreplaceable. Who is legally liable here? What are the ethics? We *cannot* afford to reimburse this expense. [more inside]
I'll be booking a multi-city international trip soon. For the really long trans-oceanic segments, I'd like to entertain the idea of business class, but I don't want to spend my travel budget on business class for the entire route. What is the best way to book a trip where segments A, B, D, and H are normal cattle class but C, E, and/or G want to be fancy-cattle or business class? [more inside]
I've been asked on short notice to take over a shipping position or role in addition to my usual work flow. This would primarily involve using Fedex to ship to destinations domestic and internationally. How can I get up to speed on this? [more inside]
I sent some friends in Sicily a gift via USPS Priority Mail International. I am trying to reach someone responsible for local/last leg delivery in Sicily, but who would that be? [more inside]
Help us leave the U.S. this fall for somewhere very inexpensive. We have three requirements: $4,000 total budget for two people for 10 - 14 days including flights; vegetarian food be available, plentiful preferred; relatively safe. That's it. [more inside]
There are certain items I cannot buy in China. So I tend to use Amazon for cases like this. But there are some items they refuse to ship to me here. [more inside]

I am rather experienced with handling my communication with my international traveling as I have been doing it for some time. However my current job relies very strongly on text messaging and I haven't come up with a bulletproof solution as to how to receive and respond to text messages seamlessly. [more inside]
I am an American university professor in a social science at a research 1 university. In the past decade or so, at my university (and all universities that I've worked at) there has been a huge influx of international students, especially from Asia. My current undergrad classes are between 50-75% "English language learners." There are a lot of challenges in teaching these students and I'm looking for some concrete advice. [more inside]
I'm very curious to learn about people and organizations who are based there are making grants or scholarships to support local communities. Any leads or thoughts? [more inside]
Hi, I am moving to Japan soon and I can't seem to find a definitive answer on whether or not my various electronics will work in Japan. I was hoping to move my tv, speakers, consoles, and AVR but most of them are rated at 110-120V and Tokyo is rated at 100V. I have read articles saying it is fine and other saying the opposite. Can anyone point me to some credible source to help answer this question? Are there other things I need to look into besides voltage? My understanding of electricity is abysmal.
My friend in Utah has never had a conker. I want to send her one. It's a seed, but not a foodstuff. Is that cool with US customs/USPS?
My boss travels 300+ days per year, often to countries in which internet and phone connections are unreliable or nonexistent. Communication is often bursty, sporadic, at odd hours, and tinged with anxiety. How can I better manage expectations and limit stress for both of us? [more inside]

I have been offered a somewhat prestigious job in foreign news. I have been working in other areas of journalism for the last decade, but am not particularly well versed in international news. So I am looking to bone up on, basically, the entire history of the world, all of its current political leaders/conflicts, geography, current expert thinkers/critics on regional international questions. Aside from getting a world map shower curtain, what else should I be doing? [more inside]
I am in the middle of deciding what I want to do with my life, and I need your help. It has to be something I can do in several countries or remotely (free-lance is only possible if I can still get a visa.) [more inside]
I am in the UK and have a UK amazon account. My recipient is in the US. How should I send her books? The books are available on the US website - can I save money and shipping by having them sent from the US? if so how can I do that from my UK amazon account? Thanks, I fail at googling this!
I'm moving soon (UK Home Office and God willing) from the US to England. I will be there for roughly 3 years, give or take, and am hoping that I can have a portion of my substantial amount of books there with me. Previous suggestions on shipping indicate USPS M-bags as the go-to choice, but USPS no longer offers anything but air service on media bags, pushing the cost to around $175 for 44 lbs. This is more than I want to spend. Ideas? [more inside]
I've been making the transition into international development and am looking to join a relevant association. Which should I join? [more inside]
My wife and I left Sydney 3 years ago as newlyweds, and we will soon be returning with 2 young children (currently 2 years and 1 month old). When we left we had family and friends there, now they have all pretty much departed. I'm looking for any relocation tips in general, but in particular around temporary accommodation for when we arrive, buying a house worth of furniture, transport and other logistical things. I would write "1950s" or "1980s", and this is universal among native English speakers, so far as I am aware. In international contexts, however, I sometimes observe that people whose English spelling is otherwise flawless will consistently write "1950ies" or "1980ies", which reads to me like it has an extra syllable. Where does this convention come from, and what linguistic background makes it sound like a reasonable way to contract these numbers? [more inside]
What's the cheapest way to send a small-ish (<5lb, maybe 6"x6"x6") box from NYC to London (for delivery to a lab with a receptionist) within a week or less? I could easily price USPS, UPS, and FEDEX, but I've heard there are smaller int'l carriers.
I need a prepaid "burner" phone for work in the USA later this year. However, I will need one that works in Canada as well, which was not an option the last time I was traveled with one. [more inside]
I currently own an Oral B electric toothbrush with charger unit #3757, 110-130V, 1.3W. I'm moving to Malaysia soon which has the 240V/50Hz power, so I got someone to bring me a new fancy Oral B from the UK which has the same electric supply. This comes with a charger that is also labeled #3757 but says 220-240V 0.9W. So my question is, can I safely charge the new toothbrush with the old charger until I leave the US? Or will the slightly higher powered charger fry it?

My mother is giving me her china. She and the china are in the US. The destination is Australia. Can you recommend a shipping company that specializes in international shipping of fragile items like this who will come pack it all up for her? If you don't have specific recommendations, are there things to look for/ask about when I talk to shipping companies? Are there other issues I should consider?
Mom, who only communicates through e-mail but has a distinctive style and insider information (so I know it's Mom), is traveling in the UK until 4/8/2014. She thought the lost her debit and credit card so she cancelled them. Now she has only her cash which won't get her all the way there. My challenge: figure out (with your help!) the best way to get her some funds so she can enjoy the trip. [more inside]
How do I build someone's credit while they are overseas and not a US citizen? I am getting married to someone who is Japanese (in about 5 months) and lives in Japan right now. Because I know we will one day want to buy a house, I want to start building her credit as soon as possible because I know that it is easier to get a loan with two people signing instead of one. I will be traveling to Dublin, Ireland frequently in the next 6 mos - year and I need to find an appropriate SIM vendor. I have done a ton of research but I am still hamstrung in terms of concrete advice. Here is what I know: I have unlocked my old iPhone 4 for this purpose. My husband and I have AT&T for our stateside smartphone service. My mother has Verizon (my preschooler will be with her). I will use the phone to call my husband and daughter nightly (probably two separate calls) and I will want some data coverage for navigation, texting, etc. I would prefer not to initiate any kind of contract until after the first trip. Any recommendations? TIA.

I'm about to finish my PhD this coming Spring in the U.S., and although the funding I received was specifically for creating "practitioners" I'd actually like to sharpen my research and publication skills via a post-doc. For the last day, my phone has been targeted by the "have two random cellphones call each other simultaneously and see what happens when someone picks up" prank, similar to what is available through websites I won't advertise here. I'd like to expand my podcast listening horizons a bit--as in geographically and culturally. Are there any podcasts that regularly go globetrotting for their non-news stories? Makes regular attempts to be less WEIRD? Radio Netherlands Worldwide for example had the environmentally themed Earth Beat and a TALish The State We're In. They were both amazing, but canceled due to budget cuts. I'm also on a crime and mysteries kick, so something like Interpol's greatest hits podcast (they don't AFAIK) would be awesome.
This is a pretty big question but there are two essential parts to it: the things I need to think about when moving, and those I need to consider for living there for a reasonable length of time (18 months probably). [more inside]
Apologies for the probable stupidity of this question: I want to take my locked T-Mobile phone to Ireland for a couple weeks and use it as a camera, and for internet access where there is wifi. No calls, no texting. Can I do this without incurring outrageous international roaming charges? Or does just, like, turning it on overseas set in motion the roaming charges? Thanks.
