I live in an apartment building, and my neighbors recently caused some pretty significant damage to my unit (the details are irrelevant.) Anyway, I'm going to have to vacate while repairs are done. My insurer will pay for my stay in a hotel, and my landlord has offered to re-imburse my rent for whatever time I'm not occupying the apartment. Is this ok? I know: YANML. [more inside]

I (26/male) am leaving Los Angeles in January for at least one year of backpacking solo around Australia, NZ, SE Asia, and possibly some other places! Other than enjoying my remaining time before I leave (going to favorite restaurants, hanging with friends, etc.), what pre-trip activities should I be thinking about, and what preparations should I be making (especially while I have good insurance)? What do you wish someone had told you before you left for a trip of this length and scope? [more inside]

I'm relocating to the US (from the UK) in a couple of weeks and having concerns about health insurance. My husband's employer covers health insurance for him, but to cover me as well we must take out the 'family policy' for $500 per month (if we had 4 kids this would be a great deal, but apparently it's the same price for the whole 'family' even if that's just me. This seems crazy to me, not sure if it is normal!). Is my alternative plan crazy? Health insurance companies confuse and scare me! [more inside]

We struggling to keep our over-18 child covered under our health insurance. She has a four year history of mental health struggles. She has been able to more or less stay in school as a full-time student but we aren't sure she can keep it up. The two strategies seemed to be to get the school to give her full-time status with a partial load due to disability or to convince the insurance company that she is not capable of "self-sustaining employment" Anyone have any experience with either route? A local vocational school is offering a 15-week program to train students to become independent insurance adjusters and hopefully pass the Texas All Lines Adjuster exam. I'm sure the 15-week training program is insanely expensive, but supposedly the independent insurance adjuster gig is considered pretty lucrative--especially for someone like me without a college degree. Anyone have any advice for someone stuck in dead end job and considering plunking down the money and time to become an independent insurance adjuster? Can a guy make a living as licensed independent insurance adjuster?

Since being fired last month, I'm in the process of getting health insurance for my family. But, I'm kind of confused with this COBRA '65/35 for nine months' deal with the government. I'm awaiting to hear from our local Blue Cross provider for a 9/15 effective date, but, our calculations show that the COBRA discounted price for nine months would be roughly $150 less than the Blue Cross premium.
Now, it is my understanding that you have to elect COBRA AND send in your request for the 65/35 subsidy at the same time. If I don't get the subsidy, I want to go with Blue Cross. How do I do this properly? Is there any way I can apply for the subsidy without requesting COBRA at the same time?

There is much talk about health care rationing in Britain, for example. How do I find out more about the status of rationing in the United States, my health care (nice employer based) and Medicare in particular. Is it the case that with health care in the US, private or Medicare, cost is never a reason to deny a procedure? That people under Medicare, for example, get all of those 50,000$ drugs that give you 6 months of life? How can I find out if my plan covers every possible procedure or not? I'm less concerned with the issue of rescision as a roundabout way of denying care versus explicit denial of care based on cost.
