From LAX to IND with no stops - that's possible right?

Does any airline fly direct from anywhere in the Los Angeles area to Indianapolis? I've been looking for a little bit here now and I haven't found one airline that's direct to Indianapolis. Am I crazy? There's nothing? Not from Long Beach? Not from Burbank? Not from Ontario? How is that possible? Indianapolis is a pretty big city for the midwest isn't it?

Are there ANY direct options or am I nuts?

Rust Belt! Yes!

Rust Belt Boogaloo: What to do in Detroit, Indianapolis, and/or Cleveland this week? We're heading up North for a wedding and will be visiting each of those cities: Detroit Thursday and Saturday; Indianapolis Friday; Cleveland Sunday. (My college roommate lives in Indianapolis and I went to school in Cleveland. It's been years since I've been up this way and I want to make the most of it, rental car mileage be damned.)

We already have some ideas, but your suggestions for things to do or see while we're up there would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Help me find my place in Indy

Moving to Indianapolis for 1 year for a dietetic internship. Where should I live? I'll have to drive around to lots of hospitals, but I like living in the city. I am 26 and enjoy live music and brew pub type places. I grew up in a college town, but the campus scene is generally gross to me, as I'm not single. I'm there for 1-year only, so I'll be renting. I'm looking for $500–$700 per month. Other things I like:
-Riding my bike
-Art and gallery walks
-Delicious food
-Culture

Relevant on ask.mefi, but not perfect:
1
2
3
Moving there in August 2009... Please help!

How to see the inauguration on a BIG screen in Indy?

How do I host an inauguration viewing party at a movie theater? Or, advice on convincing a Indianapolis theater owner to do it him/herself? A friend from Asheville mentioned that a growing movement of movie theaters will be showing the inauguration on the big screen. Awesome! Except (1) I can't find a theater in Indy actually doing this, (2) I don't know anyone who owns a theater and (3) I don't have the cash to rent a movie theater and invite a ton of friends.

Things I can do:
1. Invite TONS of people via local political groups.
2. Identify local media to promote the event.

Given the circumstances (lack of time and money), what would be the best way to move forward?

Indy, Indiana, not Louisiana, Paris, France, NY or Rome

Moving to Indianapolis, need neighborhood recommendations. Posting this for a friend: Mrs. Friend just accepted a job located near the SW corner of the greater Indianapolis tri-county area. They are currently in South Dakota (Brookings). Mr. Friend is looking for suggestions on where to live. They need a good school system (1 middle-school aged kid) and a house. They also need housing in Indy for grandma who is now in a HUD supported senior apt complex in Brookings. They like the college town vibe, but I think Bloomington is too far of a commute. Mr. Friend is a freelance writer/audio producer/stay-at-home dad.

Please give suggestions for good neighborhoods, MLS numbers, zip codes, etc where they can look. My friend thanks you!

Specific questions about one night in Indianapolis.

Specific questions about one night in Indianapolis. We're staying in Indianapolis the night before Thanksgiving on our way to Cleveland. We're thinking of staying at the Embassy Suites North, which seems to be located just north of Westover. What is that area like? Is it suburban? We'll get into town around 8:30 PM and will only want to go out a late dinner. The room is $100 for the night.

For another $20, we can stay downtown at the Hilton Garden Inn or the Hampton Inn. Would that be a better location?

Also - if we're in town only one night, where do you suggest we eat? We'd like something that's reliably good - not a hole in the wall long shot. (I've read the other MeFi questions about Indy, but we only have one shot at a restaurant so we need to pick just one.)

Anything else special we shouldn't miss that night? I know there's live music at the Slippery Noodle - anything else?

Indianapolis

Three weeks in Indianapolis! Your travel tips, please? I'm headed to Indianapolis in late October/early November for this seminar. Though there will not be a lot of free time, I want to make sure I do make the most of an opportunity to experience a new city. I've looked at this thread, but would like to add some more suggestions. Things I like:

-Live music, especially roots and alt.country
-Great food, especially in these categories: ethnic, chowhound/roadfood style, or unique bistro style
-Great pedestrian neighborhoods for walking around, people-watching, and shopping
-Outdoor activities and recreation spots for hiking, running, exploring, paddling, etc
-Daytrip destinations in the region
-MeFites to meet up with
-Bookstores
-Experiences I couldn't have anywhere else

I would normally ask for museums, but since we'll be visiting a bunch during the program I will probably want to avoid them during my off hours.

Thanks in advance for anything you're willing to share!

Hotels in Indy?

Indianapolitans: Headed to GenCon (held at the Indiana Convention Center) and am trying to determine which lodgings are most or least sketchy? I'm looking at the Quality Inn & Suites ($77/night), the Jameson Inn ($79), America's Best Inn ($73), the Travelodge Airport ($58), the South Travelodge ($65), Best Value Inn ($70), Knights Inn ($80), Days Inn Airport ($80), Super 8 Emerson ($55), the Budget Inn East ($59) -- I'm basically running through what's listed on Expedia that's under $90 and still listing available rooms. The important factors are basically that it be someplace we can get a restful night's sleep. (There are three of us, so it should be someplace amenable to a two doubles + cot scenario, but I don't expect you to know that.) We would like to be able to walk to the convention from the hotel, so knowing whether a particular place is or isn't on a four-mile-or-less route that we would want to walk after dark is important. Other amenities are less important, although continental breakfast and free wifi would get bumped.

Basically, I want to know whether the Jameson is particularly nice, or the Super 8 is particular clean, or the Days Inn is particularly terrible, or whatever.

Midwest - East Coast Roadtrip

We've figured out the route for our upcoming road trip, so now I have a few questions, involving hotels in the Indianapolis area and must-sees in IL, OH and WV. 1) Our overnight point is going to be Indianapolis, IN. We'd ideally like to find a midscale hotel (not horribly expensive, but not a Motel 8, either) just outside of the city. Inside the city will do in a pinch, but we're looking to avoid city noise. (We live across from a police station and an army of jackhammers at the moment.) Any suggestions on this?

2) Our route will have us stopping in the Rockford and Bloomington areas of IL, Colombus, OH and Charleston, WV. Our trip has turned into less of a sight-seeing vacation and more of a get-there situation, so our time is limited, but does anyone have any must-sees for those areas?

Thanks for your answers on my previous question, and any you have for this one!

How do I prevent someone from stealing my central A/C?

How do I protect my central air conditioner unit from theft? Two weeks ago, someone stole my air conditioner unit during the night. I couldn't believe someone would go to the trouble, but apparently I'm not alone. The price of copper, a major metal in the construction of an A/C unit, has risen dramatically over the last year. Thieves can now steal an A/C unit, take it to the scrapyard, and sell it for a decent amount of cash without even providing identification. But what gets them $50-$100 costs me $1000 in insurance deductable and a whole slew of hassle.

I need a creative way to protect this unit. The high number of stray cats in the neighborhood makes a motion activated light impractical and generally useless. And I'm more concerned about losing another $1000 than ascetics at this point. I can fix ugly later.

Any ideas?

IndyFilter

IndyFilter: I am going to be in Indianapolis for an interview towards the end of next week. I will be in town for two evenings, and I am looking for things to do. Do you have any suggestions for places to visit, pubs to drink at, and restaurants that serve great Japanese, burritos, or pizza? I am 21 years old so I'm looking for places that draw a younger crowd, ideally young professionals. I've loved my time in college, but I am about ready to leave the college crowd behind. I am not a huge fan of clubbing, so if you can steer away from any of those in your recommendation, that would be appreciated. Also, I am interested in checking out places to live. If you have any suggestions for neighborhoods like Lincoln Park in Chicago, that would be fantastic. So... in short, help me find the Lincoln Park of Indianapolis!

Blowing air from airport security.

I went through airport security today, and had to go through a large apparatus that blew bursts of air at me from about 30 little air jets. What was that? What does it do? What were they looking for? This was at the Indianapolis International Airport for those who were wondering. I'd never seen it before. It was like an oversized metal detector that you walk into, stand in the middle and then are shot with air. The air nozzles are from the floor to about six feet high and shoot air progressively down your body. Interesting contraption.
