I'm Indian and I have been dating a white girl for about 2.5 months. How do I deal with my parents who only believe in marrying someone who is also Indian? I've not told them about the girl I'm dating because I do not want to deal with bad talk when the relatives and family involved. [more inside]

I have a gift card for a fancy spice store, and the only spices that are missing from my kitchen are Indian food spices, which is a shame because I LOVE Indian food. What spices/herbs/seeds/nuts should I get to be able to cook complete Indian dishes? And what should I make with them? [more inside]

Asking for a friend. A coworkers wife has been diagnosed stage IV brain cancer. They are East Indian. We would like to bring flowers to their home. Does anyone know if certain flowers have special meaning culturally and / or are there flowers to avoid? Thank you.

Summer is coming and I'll have a lot of time on my hands. What are some of the tastiest spicy foods you've ever had? I'm thinking Indian, but Cajun, Mexican and so forth are all possibilities. I'm after interesting, involved recipes that can be spicy, but are above all TASTY. What should I make? [more inside]

I work in West Harlem on 135th St. and 8th Ave. I love all types of food, but especially meaty, flavorful foods like oxtail stew. Where should I go? I'm a grad student with a 45-minute lunch break, so the cheaper and closer to work, the better!

Recommend me some music to go along with reading Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children
? While reading the book, it's occurred to me that I like and am interested in Indian music, but don't really have any, and don't really know any artists to look for other than Ravi Shankar. I think I'm mostly looking for the more classical Indian styles, as opposed to the pop/Bollywood stuff, but some of both would be nice maybe. Can anyone suggest other performers or albums? Bonus if they're easily available through Amazon or iTunes.

MisterBen needs recommendations for a very specific kind of Indian cookbook – one that’s organized by technique, not by course or ingredient. Imagine if Alton Brown or Mark Bittman wrote an Indian cookbook. The idea is to learn reusable techniques and general concepts of what flavors are used together.
What he already has: Madhur Jaffrey’s classics, Raghavan Iyer’s “660 Curries”, and Vikas Khanna’s “Flavor First”, which are used as bibles. Almost all Indian ingredients can be found in our area, and he is comfortable at making his own masalas, so feel free to recommend books you might think of as advanced.

Please tell me, what is the best English translation of the Mahabharata? I'm not particularly concerned that it be a verse translation. I would prefer something that's available in electronic form (for reading on my Nook). Something that's public domain, and therefore available on Google books, even better. But these are preferences, not hard requirements. I'm more concerned with reliability of the translation. [more inside]

Diwali is coming up and I'd like to politely mention this to my close Indian coworkers, similar to a 'Happy Christmas' or 'Happy New Years' they would be likely to say to me. What's the best way, would a simple 'Happy Diwali' be appropriate? If so, what's the correct day for this as it's a 5 day festival from my understanding? This year (2010) it looks like November 5th is the main date.

A friend of mine found an old military medal in New Hampshire. It appears to be made of tin or some other light metal and handmade. The first part is a twig attached to a decoration, and the second part is arrows in a pouch. I put video on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlPqFhq6xdY
The audio is from Lost, which was playing when I did the video.
Does anyone know what these medals are?
