Mysterious Mirena migration

After a year and a half of trusty service, my Mirena IUD seems to have been sucked into unknown parts of my uterus, taking its strings with it and leaving me with dull cramps 24/7. Has this happened to you or anyone you know? [more inside]

How to start an (awkward) conversation about my IUD

I had an IUD (Mirena) inserted about a month ago. I recently met someone new (yay!), he's great (yay!), and it seems that sexytimes are soon to be had (yay!). I think I need to talk with him about my IUD, though, and I don't know how. [more inside]

Cherry angioma and IUD...any connection?

I assume that's what all these bright pink/red flecks are, though they aren't exactly round and are not raised at all; completely flush with the skin. Anyway, they came on all of a sudden within a week or two of getting the Mirena. Historically I used combination pill then NuvaRing and never had these appear. Should I be concerned? Is it possible they have anything to do with the IUD?

Please give me birth control advice - AFTER condoms.

My partner and I have decided to use two layers of birth control. Her doctor said it was a good idea, because condoms have a small failure rate even when used perfectly. However, she doesn't want her parents to know (she's 20) and is on their health insurance, and she has a family friend that works at planned parenthood. [more inside]

Trying to decide which kind of Copper IUD: Liberte or Nova?

I hate when docs say: "This has never happened, you are so unlucky"

I had an appointment for my copper IUD to be removed last night and jokingly said to the nurse practitioner, "I sure hope it comes out easier than it went it". Well...it didn't come out. The strings broke and the 'T' is still in there somewhere. The NP went to get the doctor who said "This has never happened here before - you are very unlucky!". Um yeah, thanks, I know. The doc tried to fish out the IUD with some tool, but didn't have any luck. They both had very sorrowful/concerned looks on their faces and sent me home. I am awaiting a phone call today to see if they can get me in to see someone (anyone) early next week. Fingers crossed. [more inside]

Cervical barriers and rough sex

After years of experimenting with different types of birth control, I have an appointment to get fitted for a cervical cap. I'm curious to hear from other women who use this method how effective it is during rough sex and deep penetration. I know it's supposed to create a suction around the cervix, but how easy is it to be dislodged? Also curious about diaphragm and the Lea contraceptive. [more inside]

What were you offered for pain during your IUD insertion?

A friend of mine is designing a clinical trial to determine the comparative effectiveness of different methods of pain control during IUD insertion. The problem is, there isn’t a lot of existing literature on what women are actually being offered out in the real world, and what does exist is pretty low quality. If you have an IUD, and if you were offered pain control measures during insertion, what were they? How effective those measures were isn't really relevant here, because that's what the trial is designed to figure out; I’m just trying to help her get a sense of what the current state of practice is so that the design of the study can be as robust and relevant as possible. For Science!

I got an IUD and now they tell me I have a bicornuate uterus... Options?

First of all, I got an IUD inserted last week. I was planning on paying out of pocket (I'm under my parent's insurance but for religious reasons didn't want to utilize it for fear of discovery), but is there any way to make it cheaper? Second, I went to a check-up appointment today and they told me that I have a bicornuate uterus (heart shaped, not totally split), something they didn't check for before they inserted the IUD. I was told the IUD wasn't in the correct location and would therefore be less effective. What are my options? [more inside]
